Bridgestone Museum of Art, Ishibashi Foundation

Chūō-ku, Japan

The Bridgestone Museum of Art devotes itself to the collection and the exhibition of works from Impressionism and other modern art to 20th century art, as well as Japanese Western-style paintings from the Meiji and following eras.
It was in 1952, that Ishibashi Shojiro, founder of the Bridgestone Corporation first opened an art museum in the newly built Bridgestone Building in order to exhibit his private collection. In 1956, the Ishibashi Foundation was established, and in 1961, almost all the works in the Ishibashi collection were donated to the Foundation, forming the nucleus of the present permanent collection. Thee Bridgestone Museum of Art has continued thereafter to enrich its collection, while attaching much importance to the environment in which the visitors appreciate its art works. The Museum also organizes activities such as the Saturday Lectures, which have been held since 1952, as well as guided tours and special programs for families.
