Aptera Motors Corp. is an American solar electric vehicle publicly traded company based in Carlsbad, California which intends to manufacture an energy efficient electric two-seat three-wheeler. The company was founded in 2019.
An earlier company, Aptera Motors Inc., was founded in 2005 but liquidated back in 2011 after failing to get enough funding to start production of similar efficient 3 wheeled vehicles powered by gasoline and electricity. The Zhejiang Jonway Group bought the intellectual property of Aptera Motors Inc. in 2012 and started companies named Zaptera USA and Aptera USA, but they had both ceased operations by 2014 without producing any vehicles.
The current company raised $140 million from 2019 to April 2025 and another $17M by March 2026. Aptera ended 2025 with $10M in cash, an annual net loss of $44M. As of March 2026 they wrote they won't be starting a low-scale production line until at least March 2027, pending raising a further $50 million.
