The afghani is the official currency of Afghanistan, a status it has held since the 1920s. It is nominally subdivided into 100 puls, although there are no pul coins in circulation as of 2026. Printed in Poland, the afghani currency is managed solely by the Central Bank of Afghanistan.

Die naam is metonimies afgelei van die Poolse adjektief złoty "die goue een" en die selfstandige naamwoord złoto "goud" - złoty beteken dus letterlik "die goue munt", "die goue geld" - net soos in Afrikaans, Nederlands en Duits waar die substantiewe gulden en geld eweneens oorspronklik van respektiewelik goud en Gold afgelei is.
