Dash je open source kryptomena. Dash nemá centralizované riadenie - emisia sa vyskytuje počas ťažby. Z odmien, ktoré dostávajú ťažiari, je 90 % rozdelených medzi ťažiarmi a prevádzkovateľmi masternodov. Zvyšných 10 % je použitých na financovanie schválených projektov.
Dash bol pôvodne vytvorený ako XCoin 18. januára 2014. Za dva dni od spustenia bolo vyťažených približne 1,9 milióna coinov. 28. februára 2014 došlo k zmene názvu na Darkcoin. Darkcoin bol 25. marca 2015 premenovaný na Dash. Tvorca Dash Evan Duffield.
Hlavné rozdiely medzi Dash a Bitcoin sú v tom, že transakcie v Dash sú vďaka službe InstantSend veľmi rýchlo potvrdzované a používateľ môže využiť aj zvýšenú úroveň dôvernosti niektorých transakcií vďaka vstavanej funkcii Private Send.
Od marca 2021 je Dash zahrnutý v zozname tridsiatich populárnych kryptomien z hľadiska kapitalizácie.
