IMPROVEMENT IN' SCROLL-SAWING- MACHINES.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same To all whom 'it may concern:
e Be it known that I, ELlPHALE'r A. TRIPP, of New? ark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Scroll-sawingrMachine; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming part of this specification.

Figure 2 is a front view of the slide to which the lower end of the saw is attached.

A is the frame of the machine, to the top of which is attached the feed4table B.
C is an arm, the lower end of which is attached to the lower part of the rear end of -the frame A. The
arm Gis curved rearward, upward, and forward, as shown in iig. 1, so as to leave the feed-table B free for the material to be operated upon.
The arm. O is further strengthened by the braces D, the forward ends of which are attached to the upper part of the rear end of the frame A, the rear ends of which are attached to the middle part of the arm C.
To the upper end of the arm C is attached asocket, E, in which the slide F works up and down, said slide being kept in a vertical position while moving up and down by passing through the guide-arm Gattached to the arm O near its upper end.
With the upper end of the slide F is connected the end of the spring H, the other end of which is connected with the arm C.
The spring H should be of such a strength that its elasticity will strain the saw suiicicntly.
' I ist-he saw, the upper end of which is attached in the ordinary manner to the lower end of the slide F, and the lower end of which is attached in the ordinary manner to the upper end of the slide J, which moves up and down in a dovetailed groove in the face of the plate K.
To the upper end of the plate K, is attached a pin, k, which enters a hole in the right-angled plate L.
The plate K is further secured to the right-angled plate L by the hand-screw M, which passes through a slot in the plate L and screws into the plate K. This enables the plate K to'be adjusted at an inclination so that the saw I may work with a forward cut.
The upper arm of the right-angled plate L is made with a dovetailed rib upon its upper side, which enters a dovetailed groove in the face of the plate Nattached to the under side of the feed-table B, t0 which it is secured by a hand-screw, O which passes through a slot in the upper arm of the right-angled plate L and screws into the plate N.
This construction enables the plates to be so adjusted that the saw l, while working with a forward cut, may e'nd the cut vertically, so as to leave the end of the kerf square. v
To tlie slide J, at or near its middle part, is pivoted the upper end of the connecting-rod P, the lower end yof which is pivoted to the lever Q.
The forward end of the lever Q'is pivoted to the forward part of the lframe A, and its forward part is curved, as shown, so that in its movements it may not interfere with the` movements of the slide J, nor be interfered with by the -movements of said slide.
To the rear end of the lever Q is pivoted the lower 'end of the connecting-rod R, the upper end of which is pivoted to the crankepin of the crank S, attached to the shaft-or body of wheel T, which is pivoted to the. supports attached to the frame A.
v is a band which passes around the wheel T, and around the large wheel V, which serves also as-a ilywheehand is pivoted to the lower part of the frame A.
To the journals of the wheelV is attachedacrank, W, tofthefcrank-pin of which are pivoted the upper ends of the connecting-rods X, the lower ends of which are pivoted to the treadle Y.
By this construction and arrangement of the parts, the saw may be easily and conveniently driven at the necessary speed, by the operator with his foot.
'Having thus described my invention,
I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The combination of the adjustable pivoted grooved plate K with the sliding block J, to which the-lowerend of the saw I is attached, substantially as herein shown and described, and for the purpose set forth 2.
