To all'wwfrl it AfBe it known that I, HENRY E). DERBY- p sarna, a citizenof 'the United States', re.-
siding in Chambersburg, Pennsylvania, have ,invented certain Improvements in ,Safety-Latches for Board Drop-Hammers,
ofwhich the following is a specification. One object .ofmy invention is` to provide aconveniently operated and relatively'siin-- ple supporting device for temporarily preventin movement 'of the bar which con'- trols t e-'action .of the lifting rolls of a board dro hammer in order -to render posble. This object Ivattain in the following.
i'nanner, reference being had to the acc0m- 4, are side elevations of-the safety latch' panying drawings, inV which Figure 1, is a front elevation of a board drop hammer, showing my invention as applied thereto; Fig. 2, is'a side elevation of the hammer shown in Fig. 1; Figs. 3 and and its operating lever, lshowing the parts intheir inoperative and operative positions respectively; Figs. 5 and 6, are front eleva-v tions of the parts shown in Figs. 3 and 4A respectively.
In the accompanying drawings, 1rep-re-v sents the base of a hammer having side frames 2 providing guideways for a rain 3. On these frames aret mounted Vliftin rolls 4 and 5 which, under operating con itions, may be made to co rate to en age the lifting boartl 6, whic is attachedlto the ram 3 to raise the-I'atterJf Said rolls are mounted ond e'centrics carried in the well known manner by the frames 2 operated by;
a lever ,7 to cause said/rolls te engage.A 0l' disengage the lifting board 6 Said lever is actuated through a bar 8, which/has clamped to it a knock-o" bracket 9 and 'a -mnt 182i Under these-'conditions the end ,i
'o Lthe short arm of thel levier...A 17 engages the lower-end 0f the-lifting' 13h38 and efv roll release lever bracket 10 on which the release lever 11 is pivoted. A treadle .12 is pivoted to the base of the frame'l and has connected to. it along rod 13,. acting through a lever 14,' to operate a pair o f clamps, whereby the lifting board and the ram attached thereto may-be held in the raised or up r position. Under operating conditions, t e ram upon reach/ing a point near the bottom of its stroke,'engages the` ,pecieatlon of Letters Patent., .application filed November 1, 191'1.

shown in Fig. 2, the board is grip e by the clamps 15 and -retained in 'raise position.
o eration in order -that the die may be c anged or.that any desired adjustment may be made wi said bar 8 vis unreliableaiid dangerous, since consequentl unintentional operationof the order-to preventthe ossibility of such anaccidental starting ofthe hammer, I provide a hand lever 17 ivoted to the frame at 18 and provided wit notch provides an abutment 18l fora bar or the outer eid of the said shortarm. This hand lever and the latch are so placed that .under working conditions they may be op'- arm ofthe 'levervl raisesv its short arm from 'the osition shown in Fi 3` to that shown in ig. 4, and permits t e latch 19 toas.- sume ,a substantially vertical position with its upper end in engagement with the abutfectually vprevents it from` dropping from .vided by the. frame, lwith itsvu end centwhich it strikes t e leverll'and sov outof action and the ram is freeto fall and- If it bedesiredvtop'ut the machine out of' thout danger tothe operator, it is necessary that the bar 8 be propped on fixed,A in its upper position and such proppig otif the prop, or other holding means, should4 be accidentally dislodged or removed, the
hamfner would endanger1 the operator. In
a notch in its, short arm, as indicated in Figs. 3 and 4. 'This' `erated to lockjthe bar 8 in its r"ised1pos1. tion. The downward movement f the long its raised'positiomwhile the strut orv latclr 19 engages the supporting ledge 20 pro-.
knock-off bracket 9 and causes the lower v l orting shelf 16 so thatvit drops and thei'esoy the rolls to release the lifting board. -If the 'i though ifsaid treadle be in the position- ,strut19 forminga latch which is pivoted to against 'the abutment 1'8", as'note sgthatf; j the lever, 1 7, with the' lifting vbar 8, are effectnallytlbckedin position,` The various.'
uit
parts are soarranged that under these con-r ditionsthe' 'upper end of the strut or latch: 19 enga es the abutmentrin such manner thatv its ower end rests a little to one side '5 of the perpendicular so that., therefore, it has"4 no tendency' to become dislodged.
When it is`desired to againplace the m9.--
chinein operation, the lever 17 -s pulled down'for a short distance, thereby taking the strain .fro'mthe strut 19, which may then be moved on its ivot until-it is substantially parallel wit the arm 17, whereupon this ,latter is given its normal position shown in Fig. 3. -`4Inasxnuch asthe latch orestrnt is permane/ntly fixed by. means of the pin 21, on the arm of the lever 17, the device is always rea-dy for operation and in no way-interferes with the Working of the machine under ordinary conditionss 1. The combination in a drop hammer of .the hammer liftingrolls, a bar lfor control ling the lifting rolls; with a hand operated safety latch vmounted to positively retain said barin itsraised ositlon..
2. The combination 1n a dro hammer of the'hammer; lifting rolls; a :1r-for controlling the lifting'rolls; a `device forposi- 3 tively retaining said bar in its raised position; and ai handfactuated member for? o@- erating said device. v
. O e v .3. The combinatlon 1nA a drop .hammer fof j the hammer; lifting rolls; a barf'for controll lin the liftingrolls; a-latch for retaining 3,54
sai bar" in its elevated position; and a. le-
'ver foroperatng said latch. f v 4. The combination in a drop hammer of a fra-me, a: hammer; lifting rolls, a roll controlling bar; a lever pivoted to the frame of 40 the hammer; and a member pivoted to the lever in position to coperate with said frame to positively holdthe v-1bar in its elevated position@ or to 'permite movement'bf said bar. '15 5. The combination in a drop hammer: ot a frame having a ledge, hammer litt-ing rolls; -a roll controlling har; a lever nivuted to said frame and having an ala" "ment on one of its arms; with a latch piece givot'ed-rto 50 said lever arm adjacent said abutmentin po- 'sition to he moved between the roll control- .l ling bar and the ledge on the frame. n
In testimony whereof, I have signed myname to this specification, int-he presenceof two subscribin witnesses.. HENR- E. DERBYSI-IIRE.
