Description

E. W. KENERSO'N. DETAGHABLE TOOL HOLDER. APPLICATION FILED JUNE 5, 1913.

EVERETT W. KENERSON, 0F I-IAVERI-IILL, MASSACHUSETTS.
DETACI-IABLE-TOOL HOLDER.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EVERETT W. KENER- son, a citizen of the United States, residing at Haverhill, in the county of Essex and State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improvement in Detachable-Tool Holders, of which the following is a specification.
In edge-setting tools itis customary to provide irons of different shapes for soleedges of different forms, which are placed on, and removed from a holder or handle. It has also been customary to provide a projecting tool-holding port-ion onto which the irons are adapted to be passed, and to hold the same in position by a flat spring finger which is secured on the handle and engages a recess in the side of the tool or iron. have ascertained that the tool is not securely held in place by this means, particularly as soon as the notch or recess in which the spring finger engages becomes slightly worn, and, as the wear is considerable on account of the frequent removal and replacement of the too-ls, the looseness above referred to becomes so great, in time, as to be objectionable.
The object of my invention is to provide a simple form of frictional holding device for the tool, in the above described relation, which will hold the tool tightly in place, and which will enable the tool to be easily removed, which will reduce the wear on the tool shank and which is adapted to be conveniently adjusted to take up wear.
For an understanding of my invention reference is made to the accompanying drawing, in which,
Figure 1 is a side elevation, and Fig. 2 is a plan view of a tool holding device made according to my invention. Fig. 3 is a central longitudinal section on the line 3-8 of Fig. 2.
In the drawing 0 indicates the main body, or handle of the tool and b a tool-holding shank, which is usually provided with means to prevent the tool from turning. The edge iron, or tool 0, is of ordinary form, and has a longitudinal bore in one end to receive the tool holding shank 1).
According to my invention I provide a stirrup, or U-shaped, spring wire (Z, comprising a straight intermediate transverse portion (1, on which a roller 6 is rotatably mounted, and side portions 6Z the end portions of which are approximately parallel Specification of Letters Patent.

and are adapted to be clamped in a groove a on the handle a, by means of a clamping screw f, said parallel end portions being adapted to be adjusted longitudinally beneath said screw. The tool 0 is provided with a transverse recess 0 in one side thereof adapted to receive the roller 6.
In practice the tool is slipped onto the shank 7), so that its end bears against the shoulder at the inner end of the shank, and then the spring wire d is clamped beneath the screw in such a position that the roller 6 will bear firmly against the side of the recess a next the shoulder on the handle, so that the tool will be firmly held in position. In case the recess 0 should become enlarged from wear, the wear may be compensated for by correspondingly adjusting the wire cl, although, if it is, at first, adjusted so that the roller 6 bears more strongly on the side of the recess next the shoulder than on thebottom of the recess, as shown in Fig. 2, wear will be compensated for by the inward swinging of the roller, so that adjustment will be unnecessary.
With the above described holding device the tool may be readily placed on and removed from the shank, as the roller prevents friction to a large extent. The roller also to a like extent prevents the wearing out of the holding recess 0, as compared with the spring finger before referred to.
In combination with a handle having a shank portion, a tool arranged to receive said shank portion, and having a transverse recess in one side thereof, a holding device comprising a U-shaped spring wire composed of a transverse intermediate portion and approximately parallel end-portions, a roll rotatably mounted on said intermediate portion, and a clamping device on said handle arranged to engage said end-portions in different positions of longitudinal adjustment thereof, to hold said roll under tension against the adjacent side of said recess, substantially as described.-
In testimony whereof, I have signed my name to this specification, in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
