My invention has relation to power-op erated hand tools, such as planers or smoothers, and is designed to provide a simple, eilicient and convenient tool of this character driven by electric power.

The advantages of my invention will be readily appreciated. Theftool can he readily connected by flexible conductors with a. convenient source of electric current; it is easily portable, and can be readily manipu to be operated upon; it can be easily and quickly adjusted sodas to give any desired depth of cut; and anyv desired amount of power can be obtained, according to the capacity of the motors used. .The manner of applying power to each end of the armature shaft and gearing this shaft to each end portion of the tool shaft provides an effective drive for the tool shaft whereby an even steady cutting action is insured.

A portable tool of the character described, comprising a central handle portion, a combined motor and tool-supporting frame suspended from the handle portion and extending laterally to each side thereof, a tool shaft journaled in the central portion of said frame, and a motor mounted at each end portion of the .frame and geared to the tool shaft, substantially as described.

A portable tool of the character described, comprising a central handle member having a forwardly projecting upwardly arched portion, a combined tool and motor-supporting frame adjustably suspended from and within' said arched p01'- tion, said frame having a tool shaft journaled longitudinally at the'central portion thereof, and a motor supported by each end portion of the frame and having a driving connection withr said tool shaft, substantially as described.

A. portable tool lof the character described, comprising a handle member having a bottom guiding surface and also having a forward extension, avcombined tool and motor-supporting frame, a casing -ad justably suspended from said extension and movable vertically with reference to said guiding rsurface, a tool shaft journaled in the central portion of the frame and casing, and a motor mounted within each end portion of said frame and casing and having a .driving connection with the tool shaft, lsubstantially as described.
