Description
avlium; s. :n.501 miam, 'Fammi-nvm To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALKER S. Mm, Jr,
a citizen of the United States, residingat Madera, in the county of Clearfield and- State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in Gages, of which the following is a specification.
This ,invention relates to gages and in particular to a double-ended markinggage for use. by-earpenters or the like.
The primary object of the invention is to provide a gage of this lcharacter which includes a single bar of cylindrical construction upon which the slides are mounted, ahd which has marking elements provided at the ends thereof.
A further object is to provide radially adjustable marking elements at 'the ends of 'the bar which also are adapted to engage.
the slides to limit the outward movement thereof, the said slides being provided with longitudinal slots in communication with their cylindrical bores for the reception of the respective marking elements, when the former' are turned into4 the proper angular relation thereto? to permit withdrawal of the slides.
,\ still further object the provision-of -iueans for securing each slide normally against rotation upon the' bar during its lvngitudinal adjustment thereon, the @aid means serving to secure the slide in adi ius-'ted position and being adaptednormally to maintain the same in such angular rela tion to the bar that its slots will be out of alincment with the corresponding marking element.
The invention consists in the features of construction. combination. and arrangementof parts. hereinafter fully described and claimed. reference being had to the accor. panyng drawing. in which:
Figure i a side elevation of the'device; Fig. 2 is an end elevation of the same; Fig. 3 is a longitudinal sectional view taken through a portion of the same; and. Fig. "lis a transverse sectional view taken on lire t--t of Fig.
In the drawing. the numeral 1 designates i the cylindrical bar of the device upon which vthe slides 2 an\d 3 are rotatably and slidl 4to such an extent that its inner end is moved provided with a set screw 5 having a knurled 1 g manipulatingihead 6. which is radially adjustable with lrespectto, the bar and whose mner end is'adapted tofproject into the said -groove for longitudinalsliding movement therein when .partially-'loosened or for -engagement W1th the bottomwall thereof when tightened to secure the slide in adjusted position upon the bar. A transversely elongated head 7 is formedupon the outer end of each slide to provide an outer guiding face 8 for cooperation with a radially' disposed marking pin 9 which extends through an opening provided in the adjacent 'end of the bar Lin communication with the groove 4. This marking pin fits-tight within the receiving bar opening and is adapted, when first applied, to project outwardly in both directions, one vend thereof being pointed for use in inscribing a line upon a timber or some other desirable object in parallel relation to one edge thereof, along which the guiding surface of the adjacent slide is moved. As the act-ive extremity of the said pin becomes worn, the pin may be adjusted to allow for this wear by driving'the pin through the bar opening to the desired extent. The bar l is graduated to provide a longitudinal scale 'of linear measurement vwhereby the degree of ad'ustment of eachv slide may be determined. y loosening the set screw upon each slide to a slight extent, the latter may be adjusted longitudinally upon the bar and ma y be secured in adjusted position by tightening this screw.
It should be apparent that the slides are adapted to engage the respective marking pins, whereby they are limited against longitudinal movement in the direction of the bar ends and are thusV prevented from becoming disengaged therefrom under normal conditions. lt is desirable` however. that the slides (should be capable of being removed and reUapplied to the bar without the necessity of rst detaching either of the marking pins. y Each slide accordingly is provided with diametrically opposite. longitudinal slots l0 in communication with its medial bore, which may be brought into the saine plane with the protruding extremities of the corresponding marking pin. when the said slide has been angularly adjusted upon the bar. after operation of the set screw outward so as not to project into the bar roove 4. I
From the foregoing derrription. taken in connection with the accompanying drawscale inscribed (thereon, .a slide mounted ings, it should be apparent that I have .pro-r vided @simply constructed and efficient cer'- pent'ens'A gage comprising few parts, and- Which may be readily assembled or detached.
What I claim isz' i 4l. A gage of the class described comprising e cylindrical bar haring u longitudinal upon seid bar for longitudinal; movement end-having en outer guiding surface, e radially disposed marking pin mounted in one end'o the said bar with its active extremity" vprojr-zctingjr outward therefrom,
means by-.wllich the slide may be secured in' adjusted lposition upon the bar, and means coperating with ther-saidy securing mee'ns.
for preventing rotation of the slide'npon thel bar during' its longitudinal movement tl'iereon, -the said slide being providedinteriorly with a, longitudinal slot opening through its opposite ends for .the reception ofthe -marking pin, the 'seid slot being,r disposed normally in aplaneitt. right angles to the pin.'
2. A waffe oi' the class described oonrnrismg a cylindrical bar havlng e longitudinal scale inscribed thereon,
a.. .slide mounted upon said bar forlongitudinal 'move1nent :md hevingfan outer guiding surface, a re.,-
- dially disposed marking pin mounted in one end of the seid bei' 'with its active extremity .v
projecting outward therefrom, the seid-slide being provided interiorly Witlra longitud-i- -nal slot openingjthrough its opposite ends for the `reception of the protruding end` of the merkingf pin, .the seid slot ,being {dis- 'posed normally Vin 'a plane et' right ,engles to the sind pin end, the` bar vbeing provided with a longitudine`-Lv groove in its outer' periphery,
and a'f radially' adjustable ssl' set screw provided Within'the slide with its
