Description

Cthtiltrd Sintra @atent detti-rr.
Letters Patent No. 111,422, dated January 31, 1871.
lllllPROVEM'EN'l'I IN PIPE-WRENCHES.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To allliersons to whom these presents may come:
Be it known that l, ORAMEL GRAVES BARRETT, of Boston Highlands, of the county of Suolkof the State ot Massachusetts, have invented an Improved Pipe-XVI-enoh, and do hereby declare the same to be fully described in the following specitication and represented in the accompanying drawing, in which- Y Figure 1 is a side view, and
Figures 2 and 3, longitudinal sections of it.
This wrench is composed of a lever and a doublejawed head, arranged, constructed, 'and pivoted together in the manner as represented in the drawing.
The lever shown at A has the end to operate ,with
'the jaws furnished with grooves a a, at its opposite corners.
Such lever also has a series of pivot-holes b b b, made through it to receive a pitman or pin c, which goes through the double-jawed head B and such lever. p
The said head consists of a bar bent nearly or about in a-semicircular form, and terminating at its ends in two claws orjaws al d, arranged as represented.
The head B at its middle is slotted, as shown in edge view in iig. 4, and there is made through the head laterally, in the middle of it, a series of pivotholes, e c c. These holes may be numbered in correspondence with those of the lever.
A latch-spring, C, formed with a series of. holes, j" f j, arranged in it as shown, is pivoted to the head B, and latches upon a Dipper, g, extended from one end of the pivot-pin Q, which is provided with a head, 71, as seen in the drawlng.
By having the series of holes in the .spring C corresponding in number and distances apart with those of either the lever or the head for receiving the pivotpin, we are enabled to latch the pin in place when in either of the holes c of the head.
With the wrench so made, the lever may be used with either jaw or claw in grasping a pipe or rod'for xthe purpose of revolving it, and the lever may be :1d-
justed to various distances from either jaw, so as to adapt the wrench to pipes or rodsy ot' differentdiameters, as occasion may require.
I make no claim to a pipe-wrenoh as composed ot' a lever and a single claw or hooked jaw, as shown in the United States patent No. 27,622, granted March 27, 1860, to Doolittle.
In my wrench the head has two claws or hooked jaws, arranged in manner as shown, whereby the wrench is rendered more convenient for use than a single-clawed wrench would be.
The combination of the latch-spring C, having a series otl holes, j, in it, as described, with the doublejawed head B and the lever A, made, arranged, pivoted-toget-her, and provided with the holes b b b e e e of adjustment, all substantially as described.
