Application filed December 15,1915.
To all whom t 7n (,/g/ concer-12:
Be it known that l. WOLFGANG TURN- u'ALn, a subject oi the Emperor ot Austria, residing at Syracuse, in the county oit Gnoudaga, State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in i-iutoina'tic Exhaustvalves, ot' which the Jfollowing is a specification.
My invent-ion relates to improvements in automatic exhaust valves adapted for use in connection with double acting steam cylinders. The object of the invention is to provide automatic means` operated by steam pressure'in the cylinder to open and close these valves when the engine is operating,- normally non-condensing. The invention also comprises means whereby the engine may run condensing with said exhaust valves both closed but which will automatically open if the vacuum is broken.
Referring to the drawings which illustrate merely by Way of example suitable means for the embodiment of my invention- Figure 1 is a longitudinal section of a una-dow steam cylinder showing my valve mechanism,
Fig. 2 is a detail showing mechanism for maintaining both valves closed when the ei.- gine is running condensing.
Fig. 3 is a longitudinal vertical section showing my Valve mechanism in connection with a counterfiow cylinder.
Fig. i is a longitudinal vertical section showing a modification, in. which the Valves are puppet valves, each operated separately by its own steam piston.
f Similar numerals refer to similar throughout the several views,
in Fig. 1, l show the invention as applied to a una-flow steam cylinder 5, which is provided with the main exhaust ports G delivering to an exhaust belt 7. The exhaust ports 6 are adapted to be overrun by the piston t, indicated in dotted lines, which maintains said ports closed until the end of the Working stroke, when they are unct ered for the exhaust of the expanded steam. Upon the next vreturn stroke the piston covers the parts ports 6 and traps the balance or" the steam which has not been exhausts When the engine is running normally non-condensing,
rae-eaten new.. ile, time Serial No. 66,905.
These exhaust ports 9 and 1C are controlled by the pistons 12 and 13 operating' in the cylinders 1l and 15 respectively. rhese pistons 12 and 13 are prmided with gistonextensions 1G and 17 respectively which operate in cylinders 1S and 19. rlhe ends of cylinderare connected by` any suitable means, such vpipesl 33, with the spaces 34: in the ends or heads oi the cylinders 18 and 19.
ris already stated, at the end of a power stroke the piston 8 uncovers the exhaust ports tl for the exhaust of the expanded steam. 'Upon the return stroke the piston 8 covers the exhaust ports 6 and traps the balance of the steam in the cylinder and forces the steam through, for example, port 9 into exhaust belt T until the piston 8 covers said port 9, whereupon the balance of the steam is trapped between the piston head and the end oi the cylinder' and compressed. As the compression increases, pressure is communicated to the space 34 of cylinder 18 and, after the main exhaust ports are opened, forces pistons 12 and i6 to the left thereby closing port 9 and simultaneously moving pistons 13 and 17 to the left thereby opening port 10. The space between the shoulder and inclined surface ofthe cylinder wall forms a dash pot for eliminating any impact between said surfaces. The proper adjustment of needle valve 23 secures the desired regulation of dash pot eiciency. Upon the return stroke of piston 8 a portion of the trapped steam is now discharged through port-10 until the port is closed by piston 8 and the balance of the steam being entrapped and compressed causes the actua-, tion of the pist-on mechanism to'the right, thus repeating' the cycle. A
For the purpose of providing' mechanism ich will operate when the engine is runnon-condensing, and automatically ioo close both ports 9 and 10 and maintain them closed when running condensing, I show in `Fig. 2, valve pistons 12 and 13 pivotally connected to the rods and 26 which are jointed 0r pivotally connected together at 27 and also connected at said pivot 27 with the connecting rod 28 which in turn is pivotally connected at 29 with the piston 3() operating in the cylinder 31 and normally controlled by the spring 32 to maintain the'rods 25 and 26 in alinement. The space in cylinder 3l beneath the piston 30 is connected to the condenser n'ot shown.
iOperation: When the engine is running 'non-condensing the spring 32 will maintain the piston 30 in the elevated position against the stops 33 which will maintain the 4connecting rods and 26 in substantial alinement, and will permit the same to movel from the right to the left. and vice versa, with very slight defiection from said straight alinement as indicated by the are 47. which is the are of the circle of which 29 is the center. IVhen, however. the engine is running condensing, the cylinder 8l being connected by the pipe with the condenser,'
a reduced pressurel created in cylinder 31 beneath piston 30, which will draw the piston downwardly, thus maintaining thc pistons 12 and 13 againsty the stops` 3G, in 'the closed position, during such operation of the engine.
In Fig. 3, I show the invention applied to a counterflow steamcylinder, thus .obviating the necessity of outside valve mechanism for operating the exhaust valves. In this case the. admission of live. steam into the cylinder endv at the connneneement of the stroke will operate the piston valves to close the exhaust port at the same end of the cylinder and to open the exhaust port at the other end of the cylinder.
It will be obvious that the invention need not be confined to the use of piston valves, since any form of valve and valve control may be employed which may read within the scope of the claims.
In Fig. 4, I show the exhaust ports) and 10 controlled by the puppet'. valves 37 and 38, theI spindles of which are connected with the pistons 39 and '40 operating in the cylinders 41 and 42. The bottoms of these cylinders are connected by the pipes 43 and 44 with the opposite ends of the cylinder 5 and the portion lot' one cylindei below piston 40 is connected with the top of the other cylinder above piston 3 9 by the pipe 45 while the bottom of cylinder 41 is connected with the top of cylinder 42 by the pipe 46.
The operation is as follows z-Iressure at the right hand end of the cylinder 5 is communicated through pipe 43 to the bottom of cylinder 41 beneath the piston 39 to cause the. closing of valve 37 and pressure at the same time is communicated through pipe 46 to the upper part of cylinder 42 above piston 40 to actuate valve 38 to open port 10. In a similar way pressure at the left hand end of cylinder 5 closes port 10 and opens port 9.
