The uppermost end of the spindle ll' is threaded, as indieated by 14 and carries a'suitable collar l5 which, through the interposed ring lt' is emibled to take the thrust and prevent the spindle from lowering.
The spindle is practically driven by means of one or more gears secured thereto in rigid relation therewith. and in such a manner as to eliminate or reduce to a minimum any torsional strains from the gears to the driving or tool-carrying end of the spindle. The construction preferably embodies a massive sleeve D which. at its lower end` has a tapered bore adapted to receive a prolongation of the tapered portion 11 of the spindle` and also to carry a key 1T located quite near to the tapered Iioni-ual of the spindle, and thereby locate the ultimate driving point thereof close tothe working end of the spindle and consequently shorten such portions of the spindle as are obliged to carry a torque. The main source of power is the driving pulley E suitably located at one side of the column A. shaft 1 is journaled in the bearing portions 23 and 24 and to this shaft are splined the shiftable members l" and (i carrying respectively the gears u. c, e and m.

A vertical milling-machine combining a column having an overhanging head; an auxiliary head vertically adjustable at the extremity of the main head; a spindle journaled vertically in the auxiliary head: a driven gear keyed fast to said spindle: a gear shiftahly mounted in the main head to mesh with said first mentioned gear in any predetermined position ot' the auxiliary head; hand operated means t'or shiftingr said gear and adapted to retain it in mesh. and a transmission for driving said last', mentioned gear.
