Be it known that I, F iANK L. SIMMONS, a citizen of the United States, residing at \Voonsocket, in the county of Providence, State of Rhode Island, have invented-certain new and useful Improvements in Parallel Bars and the like for Magnetic Chucks, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates broadly to magnetic chucks and more particularly to an attachment in the form of a parallel bar, V- block or the like adapted for use on magnetic chucks.
A principal. object of the present invention is a parallel bar or V-block which is constructed in such manner as to be cooperative with definite poles on the face of a magnetic chuck in such manner that the magnetism from such poles is carried upwardly to the work face of the parallel or V-block.
Another object of the present invention is a device of the character specified with portions of pole pieces in the parallel or V- block cut away to comprise arches adapted to bridge a series of face plate pole pieces in a magnetic chuck, and with portions of the adjacent member similarly cut away to comprise arches which bridge the pole pieces that support the first mentioned arches. The construction and arrangement of parts is such that one member of the parallel bar or work support contacts with a plurality of face plate poles of one sign and another member of the parallel bar or work support contacts with a plurality of face plate poles of the opposite sign.
Other and further objects of the present invention will in part be obvious and will in part be pointed out in the specification hereinafter following and by reference to the'accompanying drawings wherein like parts i are represented by like characters throughout the several figures thereof.
Realizing the present invention may be embodied in constructions other than that specifically disclosed herewith, I desire this disclosure to be understood as illustrative and not to be taken in the limiting sense.
Figure 1 of the drawings is a perspective view of one form of V-block illustrating a work piece supported thereon.
Fig. 2 is an end view of the device shown in Fig. 1 and illustrating the manner in which such a device is adapted to cooperate with a suitable magnetic chuck.
Flg. 3 is a perspective view illustrating the construction of the base of another form of my invention, which form and embodiment is designed more especially to stand lengthwise on a magnetic chuck and cooperate with a plurality of face plate pole pieces.

Magnetic chucks are relatively expensive and ordinarilyha-ve work faces which are fiat plain surfaces for the reason that such surfaces are adapted for the major portion of work intended to be held by a magnetic chuck. The development of the magnetic chuck has widened its field of utility, and it has been proposed to use auxiliary attachments for carrying the magnetic lines of force to specially formed work-faces on the attachments. This construction permits a relatively expensive chuck to become a universal tool by providing a plurality of relatlvely inexpensive supplemental work supports. Heretofore these work supports have taken two forms; one that of a permanent face plate attachment adapted more especially to cover the chuck face plate and to be used when rough work is being performed so that the relatively cheap detachable supplemental face plate is destroyed and Worn out, while the expensive chuck face plate is rotected. The other form has been that 0 parallel bars, V-bloeks, etc., made up of alternate sheets of magnetizable and n'on-magnetizable metal strung together and arranged crosswise of the length of the supplemental tool. Such devices are intended to be placed across a plurality of poles on the work face of a magnetic chuck with the expectation that the magnetism from the chuck shall induce magnetism in the plates in the supplemental device. This construction is conducive to leakage of magnetism and is not Well ada ted for certain work, particularly for holding small pieces,

with the consequential loss of magnetic holding power between such laminations.
One phase of the invention, hereinafter to be specifically described, comprises more especially parallel bars and V-blocks wherein the bars and blocks are preferably made up of two or more thicknesses of magnetic material extending lengthwise of the block and so constructed that the full length of each magnetizable element is completely and directly magnetized. By this construction there are no dead spots on the face of the device and such devices are therefore specially adaptable for holding or supporting small pieces. The invention furthermore contemplates the provision of aplurality of arches and posts upon a single magnetizable member, which permits the support of such a member upon a plurality of chuck workface pole pieces, -whereby an extremely strong magnetic field of a single sign is induced in the supplemental piece.
. Referring now more particularly to the drawings, the device disclosed in Fig. 1 comprises a pair of magnetic side members 1 and 2 which are separated by a strip of non-magnetizable material 4. The si members 1 and 2 "are definitely positioned by dowel pins 5 which extend throughthe device, and these members are secured together by machine screws 6. The dowel pins 5 and the machine screws 6 are nonma-gnetizable material in order not to shortcircnit the lines of force. The bases of the side members 1 and 2 as illustrated in Fig. 1 comprise straight surfaces which are separated by a space or arch 7. These base members are adapted to stand upon the lengthwise poles 8 and 9 of a suitable magnetic chuck (Fig. 2). The work faces of the said members 1 and 2 may comprise variously formed surfaces but I have illustrated these faces as comprising angularly disposed surfaces 10 and 11. Both of these surfaces may be precision surfaces against which work may be alined.
In Figs. 3, 4, and 5 I have shown another form of my invention wherein a side member is provided with a series of posts 15 and another side member with a series of posts 16 and with these posts separated by spaces comprising arches 17,. whereby one member is in contact with a plurality of poles of one sign and another member with a plurality ofpoles of the opposite sign.
Fig. 3 illustrates a V-block and Figs. 4 and 5 illustrate a type of parallel block. In these constructions it is to be noted that since the magnetic forces from a plurality of poles are carried into and concentrated upon a single longitudinally extending member, a very strong magnetic field is established between the work faces.
Having described my invention, what I claim is:
1. As an article of manufacture an auxiliary device for usewith magnetic chucks and the like, said device being a movable work support comprising a plurality of work support members of magnetizable material, non-magnetizable material separating the said members, said members being provided with work support surfaces angularly disposed and with one work support surface upon one member and an angularly disposed work support surface upon another member whereby the said device may be magnetized by induced magnetism to constitute one work support surface as one magnetic pole and another work support surface as a different magnetic pole.
2. As an article of manufacture an auxiliary device for use with magnetic chucks and the like, said device being a movable work support comprising a plurality of longitudinally extending work support members of magnetizable material, non-magnetizable material separating the said members, cross-extending securing means to hold said members together, said members being provided with work support surfaces angularly disposed and with one work support surface upon one member and an angularly disposed work support surface upon another member whereby the said device may be magnetized by induced magnetism to constitute one work support surface as one magnetic pole and another work support surface as a diflerentmagnetic pole.
3. 4. 5. 7. As an article of manufacture an auxiliary device for use with magnetic chucks and the like, said device being a movable work support comprising a plurality of work support members of magnetizable material, non-magnetizable material separating the said members, said members being provided with a plurality of work support surfaces and with one work support surface upon one member and another work support surface upon another member whereby the said device may be magnetized by induced magnetism to constitute one work support surface as one magnetic pole and another work support surface as a different magnetic pole, each member being provided with means whereby each member may contact with a plurality of poles of the same magnetic sign in a suitable magnetic chuck.

As an article of manufacture an auxiliary device for use with magnetic chucks and the like, a work support adapted to cooperate with a portion of a suitable magnetic chuck and to be adjustable relatively to the poles of said chuck, said device having members of magnetizable material, nonmagnetizable material separating the said members, said members being provided with work support surfaces, 'and with one work support surface upon one member and another work support surface upon another member whereby the said device may be magnetized by induced magnetism to constitute one work support surface as one magnetic pole and the other work support surface as a different n'iagnctic pole.
9. As an article of manufacture an auxiliary device for use with magnetic chucks and the, like, said device being a movable work support adapted to cooperate with a portion of a suitable magnetic chuck and comprising a plurality of longitudinally extending work support n'iembers of mag netizable material, non-magnetizable material separating the said members, crossextending securing means of non-magnetizable material to hold said mcn'lbers together, said members being provided with work support surfaces differently arranged from the poles in the said chuck and disposed with one work support surface upon one member and another work support surface upon another member whereby the said device may be magnetized by induced magnetism to constitute one work support surface as one magnetic pole and the other said work support surface as a different magnetic pole.
10. As an article of manufacture an auxiliary device for use with magnetic chucks and the like, said device being a movable work support comprising a plurality of longitudinally extending work support members of magnetizable material, non-magnetizable material separating the said members, said members being provided with work support surfaces with one work support surface upon one member and another work support upon another member whereby the said device may be magnetized by induced magnetism to constitute one work support surface as one magnetic pole and the next adjacent work support surface as/a different magnetic pole, each member being provided with means whereby each member may contact with a plurality of poles of the/same magnetic sign in a suitable magnetic chuck.

As an article of manufacture an auxiliary device for use with magnetic chucks and the like, said device being a movable work support comprising a plurality of longitudinally extending work support members of magnetizable material, non-magnetizable material separating the said members, said members being provided with work support surfaces with one work support surface upon one member and another work support upon another member whereby the said device may be magnetized by induced of poles of the same magnetic sign in a suitable magnetic chuck.

As an article of manufacture an auxiliary device for use with magnetic chucks and the like, said device being a movable work support comprising a plurality of work support members of magnetizable material, non-magnetizable material separating the said members, said members being provided with a plurality of posts separated by arches having corners rounded to conform to the direction of magnetic lines of force whereby the said device may be magnetized by induced magnetism to constitute one member as one magnetic pole and the adiacent member as a different magnetic p0 e.
