Description
A STATES.
PATENT IMPROVEMENT IN GIMLETS.
Specification forming part of LettersPatent No. 133,440, dated November 26,1872.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES L. GRIswoLD, of Chester, in the county of Middlesex and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Gimlets; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawing making a part oi' this speciiication, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure 1 of the drawing is a representation of a vertical section of my invention. Fig. 2 is a transverse section of my invention.
This invention has relation to gimlets and other boringtools; and it consists in the novel construction of the handle, which is made in two sections secured together by a screw, and is provided with diii'erentsized sockets for the reception of different-sized bits, all substantially as hereinafter more fully described.
Referring to the drawing, A Al designate the two equal sections ofthe handle, of which the section A is provided with a screw, c, t ting a threaded socket, c', formed in the secion A, and designed for the purpose of securing the two sections together, yet allowing them to be separated so that the bit may be attached. The bits B for said handle haveV the ends of their shanks bent to form studs Z extending at a right angle to said shank. In the inner end of the section A are formed several recesses, b, of various sizes, corresponding to the Shanks of the different kinds and sizes of bits, and designed to receive the studs Z. Channels or openings x extend from the mout-hs of said recesses to the surface of the handle in radial order, and receive the shanks ofthe bits in such a manner that the two sections of the handle may be screwed closely and rigidly together, and the shaking of the bit prevented.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. The combination of the section A having the L-shaped recesses b with the section A', the screw a, and the bit having the stud Z, substantially as speciiied.
. 2. The sectional bit-handle A A having the graduated recesses b a', substantially as and for the purpose specified.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
CHARLES L. GRISWOLD.
