Description
UNITED STATES PATENT QFFIGE.
TURNER WILLIAMS, OF PROVIDENCE, RHODE ISLAND.
IMPROVEMENT IN PIPE-WRENCHES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 136,350, dated February 25, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, TURNER WILLIAMS, of Providence, in the county of Providence and State of Rhode Island, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Pipe- Wrenches, of which the following is a specification:
The JV atnre of the Invention.
The nature of my invention consists in constructing the wrench with a peculiarly-formed detachable jaw, which is acted upon by a pawl attached to one of the levers, said jaw being detachable so that it may be taken off and its place supplied by one of a difierent capacity, so that the wrench may be adapted to differentsized pipes. The bearing-surfaces of bothjaws are smooth. The object of the invention is to make a wrench that is easily adapted to different sized pipes, and one that will not injure the surface of the pipe.
Description of the Drawing.
Figure 1 is an elevation of my invention. Fig. 2 is an elevation of the same, the detachable jaw being removed. Figs. 3 and 4 represent the jaw in elevation and plan.
General Description.
Let A and B represent the two arms or 1evers of the wrench, being hinged together at b. F is apawl attached to projections E from the lever B. The arm A has at its endaboss, O, projecting from both sides. These bosses are so fitted that the detachable jaw G, Figs. 3 and 4, may be connected to them, it being forked for the purpose, as shown in Fig.4, the bosses U acting as a pivot upon which the jaw swings. The jaw G has upon its back a series of notches, K, into which the pawl F fits, so that upon working the arm B the pawl will act upon the jaw, and thus close it upon the pipe to be acted upon. D is the inner'or buttress-jaw, and is pivoted, as shown, to the arm A.
In practice, I make a number of jaws, G and D, of ditferent sizes for each wrench, so that the wrench may be applied to all sized pipes.
Witnesses:
WILLIAM EDSON, FRANK G. PARKER.
