To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Vro'ron R. KOONTZ, a citizen of the United States, residing at Waynesboro, in the county of Frankhn and State of Pennsylvania, have invented'certain new and useful Improvements in C01 automatically efl'ected and controlled by the means which govern the action of the chasers or thread cutting elements.
An embodiment of the invention that is at present considered the preferable one, is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 is a longitudinal sectional view through the structure,

Fig. 3 is an end view of the chaser projecting means,
Fig. 4 is an end view of one of the chasers,
Fig. 5 is a side elevation thereof.
In the embodiment disclosed, a stock or body 6 is employed, provided with a longitudinal bore or chamber 7 in its front portion and another longitudinal bore or chamber 8 in its rear portion, the inner ends of the chambers being defined by a flange or partition 9. The front end portion of the stock is provided with radial slots 10 opening into the frontportion of the chamber 7, and a cover plate 11 is located over the front end of the chamber 7, being secured by screws 12 or other suitable fasteners, and having a central opening 13 therethrough.
Located in the chamber 7, and longitudinally slidable therein, is a plunger comprising a rear section 14 and a front section 15, the sections being adjustably connected by a screw 16 having an adjustable threaded engagement with the front section 15, and having a rear head 17 journaled in the front end of the section 14 and held in place by a pin 18 engaging an annular groove 19 in said head 17. The screw 16 has its front end exposed through the front end of the section 15, and is thus accessible through the opening 13 of the cap plate 11, The section 15 is furthermore provided-with beveled guideways 20, each of which is provided with a rib 21 projecting into the same from one side.
Radisilly disposed chasers or threading elements 22 have beveled inner ends 0' rating in the guideways 20 and are provi ed with grooves 23 that receive the ribs .21. The outer edges of the chasers are provided with the usual cutting teeth 24.
-A lever 25, fulcrumed in an -opening 26 in one side of the stock 6, has'a' bearing at 27 against the rear end of theplunger-section '14, said lever thus serving to move the plunger forwardly, and }Fthereby move the cutting elements 22 outwardly,-as will, be
obvious. The plunger is moved in the opposite direction by a coiled spring 28 located in thechamber 8 and bearing at one end against the partition 9. The other'end of the spring bears against a head or nut 30 adjustably threaded on a stem 31 that is connected to the rear section 14.

. For the purpose of governing the operation of the lun er and thereby the retraction of the t re'a ingelements or chasers 22, the following mechanism-is employed. A dog 32 is mounted to slide transversely in one side of the stock 6 and has its-inner end 1 adapted to be projected into a socket 33 formed in the rear section 14 of the plunger. The front inner corner of the dog is preferably beveled, as shown at 34. The outer end of the dog 321s also beveled asillustrated at 35 and rides in a beveled slot 36 formed in a sleeve 37 that is slidably mounted-on the exterior of the stock 6. The sleeve is held against rotation by the outer end of the dog operating in the slot 36, and also by a pin 38 carried bythe stock and operating in an internal groove 39 formed in the sleeve 37. This groove 39 terminates short of the rear end of the sleeve 37 and the pin 38 therefore constitutes a stop'that limits. the forward movement of the sleeve. An abutment member 40 surrounds the front end of the stock .and chasers, and is provided with'a rearwardly extending portion 41 that is slidable upon the sleeve 37 and is provided with slots .yieldingly urged to their foremost position by one or more coiled springs 44 hearing foremost position and the chasers are pro- 7 jected. The tap is therefore in condition to operate on the work, and if for example a plpe is to be internally threaded, the chasers will enter the same and cut threads therein. As the work progresses the end of the pipe will be engaged with the abutment member 40, thereby progressively moving the same rearwardly with respect to the stock 6. This movement will permit a progressive outward movement of the holding dog 32, and as the beveled inner corner 34 moves outwardly, the plunger 1415 is permitted to slowly move rearwardly under the action of the spring 28. This causes a slight but continuous recession of the chasers 22, resulting in a taper thread being made. As soon as the inner end of the dog 32 disengages the plunger section 15, the sprin 28 can act to fully retract the plunger an quickly withdraw the chasers 22, thus releasing the lat ter from the work and permitting the separationof the tap from the/pipe, without a retrograde rotation. To reset the tap it is only necessary to swing the actuating lever 25 from the dotted line position of Fig. 1 to the full line position, whereupon the spring 44 will force the sleeve 37 and abutment member 40 forwardly, thus moving the dog 32 inwardly until the plunger is again locked in its forward position when moved to such position by the lever 25.
From the foregoing, it is thought that the construction, operation and many advantages of the herein described invention will out urther description, and it will be understood that various changes in the size, shape, proportion, and minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a collapsible tap, the combination with a stock, of a threading element mounted thereon and movable to difi'erent projecting positions with respect thereto, and means movably mounted on the stock and automatically controlled by the work for permitting a predetermined movement of the threading element during the threading operation to produce a taper thread on the work.
2. In a collapsible tap, the combination with a stock, of a threading element mounted thereon and movable to different projecting positions with respect thereto, means movable on the stock and engaging the threading element for determining its probe a parent to those skilled in the art, with-- jecting position, and mechanism operated on I by the work threaded for effecting a progress1ve movement of the determining means with respect to the stock and thereby secure a progressive movement of the threading element to produce a taper thread.
3. In a collapsible tap, the combination with a stock, of a threading element mounted to slide transversely thereon, a position determining device on the stock having an inclined sliding bearing against the threading element, and means movably mounted on the stock and acted on by the work to effeet a progressive movement of the position determining device during the threading operation with a corresponding movement of the threading element and a resulting taper thread.
4. In a collapsible tap, the combination with a stock, of a threading element mounted to slide transversely thereon, a position determining plunger longitudinally slidable in the stock and having an inclined slidin bearing against the threading element, and
means movably mounted on the stock and acted on by the work to effect a continuous movement of the plunger during the threading operation with a corresponding transverse movem nt of the threading element and a resultant taper thread.
5. In a collapsible tap, the combination with a stock, of a threading element slidable transversely therein, a plunger slidable longitudinally in the stock and having an inclined bearing against the threading element, a holding dog for the plunger having an inclined bearing thereagainst, and a governing device for the dog mounted on the plunger and adapted to be moved by the work being operated upon.
6. In a collapsible tap, the combination with a stock and a threading element movably mounted therein, a position determining device movably mounted on the stock, a transversely sliding dog in the stock movable to and from a position to hold the position determining device, and a work engaged member movably mounted on the stock and controlling the position of the dog.
7 In a collapsible tap, the combination with a stock and a threading element movably mounted therein, a position determining device movably mounted on the stock, a transversely sliding dog in the stock mov able to'and from a position to hold the position determining device, and a work engaged member slidable on the stock and having a beveled bearing against which the dog rides.
8. In a collapsible tap, the combination with a stock and a threading element movably mounted therein, a'position determining device movably mounted on the stock, a transversely sliding dog in the stock movable to and from a position to hold the position determining device and having a beveled portion against which the said device bears, and a work engaged member slidable on the stock and having a beveled bearing against which the dog rides.
9. In a collapsible tap, the combination with a stock, of a plurality of threading elements slidable transversely therein and having beveled inner ends, a plunger slidable longitudinally in the stock and having a tapered end operating on the beveled ends of the elements, a spring for moving the plungeiin one direction, a transverse dog slidably mounted in the stock and engaging the plunger for controlling its movement by the spring, and a sleeve slidable on the plunger and having a portion against which the outer end of the dog bears to control its movement.
10. In a collapsible tap, the combination with a stock, of a plurality of threading elements slidable transversely therein and lawing beveled inner ends. a plunger slidable longitudinally in the stock and having a tapered end operating on the beveled ends of the elements, a spring for moving the plunger in one direction, a transverse dog slidably mounted in the stock and having a beveled inner end engaging the plunger for controlling its movement: by the spring, and a sleeve slidable on the plunger and having a beveled portion against which the outer end of the dog bears to control its movement.
