A. G. HJERT BUTT GAUGE Filed Bay 5, 1923 INVENZI'OR ATTORNEY WITNESS:
Patented Nov. 11, 1924.
PATENT @FEECE.
ANDREW G. HJERT, 0F SEATTLE, WASHINGTON.
BUTT GAUGE.
Application filed. May 5,
To all whom in may concern:
Be it known that 1, ANDREW G. Hanna, a citizen of the United States, residing at Seattle, in the county of King and State of Washington, have invented new and useful Improvements in Butt Gauges, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a gauge for facilitating the placing of locks, hinges and the like in position, the general object of the invention being to pr vide a device with apair of sliding blocks and an adjustable rod, the rod and blocks having markings thereon with means for adjusting the parts and holding them in adjusted position.
This invention also consists in certain other features of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, to be hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and specifically pointed out in the appended claim.
In describing my invention in detail. reference will be had to the accompanying drawings wherein like characters denote like or corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which Figure 1 is an elevation of the device.
Figure 2 is an end view.
Figure 3 is atop view.
Figure -t is a bottom view.
Figure is view of the other end.
Figure 6 is a longitudinal sectional. view.
In these views 1 indicatesa casing which has a long extension 2 at one end of its top part and a short extension 3 at the opposite end of its bottom part. The top of the easng is provided with a slot one edge of which is provided with a scale 5 and the bottom of the casing is provided with a slot 6. One side of the casing is provided with a slot '7 and the other side with a longer slot 8. Blocks 9 and 10 are slidably arranged in the casing. the block 9 having a point or marker 11 which extends through the top slot and the block 10 having a marker 12 which also extends through said slot. The block 9 is also provided with a marker 13 which extends through the bottom slot 6. A rod 1 is arranged in the 1923. Serial No. 636,971.
casing and passes through holes in the blocks 9 and 0; The rear end of said rod is provided .th a marker 15 which, when in use, projects from the rear end of the casing. The block 10 is adjustahly secured to the red by the set screw 16 and both the block and rod are engaged by the headed set screw 1'? which passes through the side slot 8 and the block 9 is engaged by a headed set screw 18 which passes through the slot 7.
From the above it will be seen that the blocks and rod can be adjusted in the easing by the headed set screws and these screws will hold the parts in adjusted position.
This gauge can be used for marking the lines for hinges, for marking the center or niortise line and the lines for the face plate of a lock. and it can also he used for marking the distance line and depth on the door jamh for the strike plate.
It is thought from the foregoing description that the ad *antages and novel features of my invention will be readily apparent.
I desire it to he understood that I may make clanes in the construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, provided that such changes fall within the scope of the appended claim.
lVhat I claim is:
A device of the class described comprising an elongated casing of rectangular cross section and having longitudinal slots in its abutmentat each end o u. l. L116 casing extending at rightangles therefrom. said abutments being disposed on opposite sides of said casing respectively, two blocks slidabl arranged in the casing each having a marking point projecting through respe:- tive slots in opposite sides of the casing, a rod extending longitudinally of the casing and passing through apertures in the blocks. means securing one of said blocks to said rod. said rod having marking point at one end thereof, and set screws passing through the respective slots in the other two sides of the casing and adapted to engage said rod and block respectively.
In testimony whereof I atiix my signature.
ANDREl V G. HJERT.
