I STATES 1,544,520 PATENT OFFICE.
EARL .1. PUTROW, OF MILWAUKEE, WISCONSIN, ASSIGNOR TO THE VALTUL GOR- PORATIO'N, OF MILWAUKEE, WISCONSIN, A CORPORATION OF WISCONSIN.
rusn-non-nnlrusrme moon.
Application filed January 7, .1924. Serial 170. 884,881.
To all whom it may concern:
' Be it known that I, EARL P. PU'I'ROW, a citizen of the United States, residing at Mi1- waukee, in the county of Milwaukee and State of Wisconsin, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Push-Rod- Adjusting Tools, of which the following is a full, clear, concise, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification. 7
This invention relates to tools for adjusting valve push-rods to attain proper working'clearance for the valves of lnternal combustion motors and'the like.
It is generally recognized that to obtain the best working conditions, particularly in motors of the overhead valve type, adjustment of the valves should be madewhile the engine is running. This has been practicallyimpossible, however, when using the ordinary wrench and screw-driver commonly employed for the purpose. One object of the present invention is the rovision of a v tool peculiarly adapted for t e purpose, by
which such adjustment maybe readily made during operation of the motor.
Other more specific objects and advan-' tages of this invention will ap ear from the 90 following descri tion of an 1 ustrative embodiment thereo For convenience of illustration and exlanation, the invention is shown and will described as embodied in a tool for adjusting the valves in motors of the overhead valve type, although certain novel features thereof may be used to advantage in tools for adjusting the valves in motors of other In the drawings:
motor, and Fig.2 is a face view of the tool shown in Fig. 1. I
The rocker arm 10, in Fig. 1, is rockably mounted upon the fulcrum shaft 11 in the usual manner, and is rovided with the usual foot 12 at one end t ereof for depressing the valvestem 13 to open the valve (not shownfi1 against the pressure of thelspring 14. e other end of the rocker arm 1s provided withthe usual threaded opening 15 containing the adjusting screw 16 whic extends beneath the arm into engagement with the socket element 17 on the upper end of the ush-rod 18. By turning the screw 16 the esired clearance between the foot 12 and valve stem 13 may be obtained. The
usual lock-nut 19 is provided for securing the screw in the desired position of adjustment.
By. the use of the tool shown, the locknut 19 may be released, the screw 16 properly adjusted, and the nut again tightened while the motor'is running and without removing the tool from the operative osition shown. The tool shown comprises a em 20 having a hexagonal socket 21 adapted to receive the nut 19. In this instance, the socket 21 is formed in an element 22 removably retained in the face of the head 20 by any appropriate means, such as a retaining screw 23 screwed into the head 20 and engaging a groove 24 in the periphery of the element 22. This element may be replaced by other elements having nut-engaging sockets of various sizes. 4
The head 20 is also provided with a bore 25 communicating with and substantially coaxially disposed with respect to the socket 21 and forming an appropriate guide-for the cylindrical shank 26 of a screw-operating member 27. This member is provided, in this instance, with abit 28 adapted for insertion in the usual kerf 29 formed in the end of the screw 16. A in 30 in the head 20, engaging within a re uced portion 31 of the shank 26, provides a swivel connection be tween the head 20 and member 27. An operating handle 32 is fixed to the head 20; In the tool shown, this-handle lies in the plane of the socket 21 and extends laterally with the respect to the head and the axis of the bore 25. Any appropriate means, such as a knob 33, is provided for l turning the member 27.
In 0 oration, the tool is fitted. over the projectlng end of the screw 16 with the socket 21 in engagement with the lock-nut 19, and by manipulationof the handle 32 the nut is turned out of its lockin position. By manipulation of the knob 32, t e bit 28 is inserted in the kerf 29 of the screw. With one hand on the knob, the other hand is free to insert the usual gage between the foot 12 of the rocker arm and the valve stem 13.
Theknob, and consequently the screw, is
then turned until proper clearance is attained, as indicated by the gage; Then the nut may be returned into locking position to retain the screw in this position of adjustment.
Various changes may be made in the embodiment of the invention above specifically described, without departing from or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention as defined in the appended claims.
- I claim:
1. In a tool of the character described, the combination of a member having nut-engaging means, a screw-operating member rotatably associated with said first-named member in coaxial relation with said nutengaging means, and a handle for operating said first-named member extending laterally with respect to the axis of rotation of said screw-operating member.
2. In a tool of the character described,
the combination of a head having a nut-engaging socket and a bore communicati therewith and disposed co=axially thereo a handle on said head extending laterally of said bore, and a screw-engaging member rotatably mounted in said bore.
3. A tool of the character described, comprising a head having a nut-engaging socket and a bore communicating therewith and extending co-axially thereof, a shank rotatably mounted in said bore, screw-engaging means on said shank, a laterally extended handle on said head lying substantially within the plane of said socket, and means on iaid shank for rotating the same in said ore.
In witness whereof, I hereunto subscribe my name this 5th day of January, 1924.
EARL r. rn'rsow.
