COMPRESSING MECHANISM FOR BARREL-MAKING MACHINES.
Application filed June 17, 1924.
To (1 whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDwIN F. BEUoLnn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Buffalo, in the county of Erie and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Compressing Mechanism for l iarrel-Making Machines, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to the stave-compressing mechanism of barrel making machines and has for its objects the provision of a mechanism of this character which will permit of readily adjusting the compressor jaws and also exchange one size of jaws for another to adapt the machine for barrels of diflerent diameters; which permits of a swiveling motion of each jaw and thus applying a substantially uniform pressure around the entire circumference of the barrel; and which is strong and durable and capable of withstanding the severest strains in actual use without liability of derangement.

The numerals 10, 10, represent two horizontally swinging compressor arms which are provided 011 the rear parts with yokes ll which are pivotally mounted on an upright post 12 so that the front parts of these arms can move toward and from each other. These arms are yieldingly held in a position in which the front parts are in an open or separated position by means of a spring 13 connecting the yokes in rear of the post 12. The front parts of these arms are moved toward each other or closed by two Serial No. 720,568.
toggle links 14, ll, which have their outer ends pivotally connected by pins 15, 15 with the rear ends of the compressor arms While their inner ends are pivotally connected by a pin 16 which slides horizontally forwardly and backwardly in a slot 17 formed in a bracket to on the rear side of the post. Upon moving the toggle links forwardly into their un folded or straightened position shown in Figure l, the front parts of the compressor arms are closed and upon moving these links into their rearward or folded position. the front parts of the arms are opened or spread apart.
lpon each compressor arm is mounted a set of compressor jaws 19 each of which is curved to conform to the periphery of the barrel to be compressed. Each set preferably comprises three members which are arranged side by side and overlap at their adjacent ends and which together with the other set form an annular row when the two arms are closed whereby the barrel is com plctely surrounded. Centrally on its outer side each compressor jaw is provided with a laterally projecting shank 20 which is slotted radially, as shown at 21.
Means are provided for mounting each of these jaws on one of the compressor arms so that it is capable of radial adjustment thereon, also capable of yielding radially, also capable of being interchanged, and also capable of a swiveling motion so that the jaw can adapt itself to the shape of the barrel which is being compressed. Each of these mountings in its preferred form is constructed as follows:
The numeral 22 represents a horizontally swinging supporting or swivel link which is arranged on top of one of the compressor arms and pivoted thereto at its rear end by a vertical pin 23 which preferably has a cylindrical central part upon Which the link turns and is provided with a lower threaded end engaging with a threaded opening in the arm and a threaded upper end which receives two retaining nuts it. The rear and intermediate links of each co1npressor arm are preferably pivoted on the same pin 23, while the front link of each set is pivoted on its individual pin :23. as shown in Figures 1, 5 and ti. Each swivel link permitted to swing outwardly but its inward motion is arrested by engagement with a stop lug arranged on the upper Ill side of the compressor arm and adapted be engaged by the central part of the respective link. The latter is yicldingly held in its innermost position in engagement with the stop lug by a tension bolt or rod passing with its body through openings in the respective link and the adjacent stop lug and connected at its inner end with said lug, and a spring 26 surrounding the outer part of said bolt and engaging its inner end with said link and its outer end with a shoulder 27 on said bolt, as shown in Figure 7. The fete front end of each supporting or swivel link slides with its underside on a guide surface 28 on the adjacent part of the compressor arm and on this front end the adjacent compressor jaw is mounted so as to be capable of ready detachment, also radial adjustment and also swiveling in a horizontal plane. For this purpose the free front end of each supporting or swivel link is provided with a vertical screw threaded opening 29 extending from the uppi r to the underside of the same which receives an externally screw threaded bushing 30. The upper end of this bushing is provided with a radial row of corrugations or serrations 31 which are engaged by similar corrugations or serrations 32 on the underside of the shank of the respective con'ipressor jaw, thereby permitting the latter to be adjusted radially on the bushing and still be interlocked therewith. The bushing and compressor jaw are detachably connected by an upright bolt passing With its shank 5t through a central opening in the bushing and the slot of the jaw shank and having the head 33 at its lower end arranged in a recess 34 on the underside of the bushing while the screw nut 35 on its upper end bears against a washer 36 resting on the upper side of the jaw shank. The lower head 33 of the connecting bolt is square and the recess 34 of corresponding form so that the same are interlocked cireumfcrentially. By this means the bushing is free to turn in the swivel link together with the coinprcssor jaw as the latter adapts itself to the barrel, but the bushing is prevented from dropping out of the swivel link owing to the screw connection bL-twcen the same.
In order to prevent the compressor jaw from turning unduly and possibly becoming displaced. a stop lug 37 projects upwardly from the supporting or swivel link into the slot of the jaw shank, as shown in l igures l 2 and I). which lug is of less width than said slot and thus permits of a limited rocking movement of the jaw and bushing relatively to the swivel arm which permits the respective jaw to adapt itself to the periphery of the barrcl but prevents rocking to such an extent as would interfere with the proper operation of the machine.
Complete unscrewing of the bushing from the swivel link and droppiugof the coupling bolt whennot connected with the respective compressor jaw is normally prevented by a retaining or locking plate 38 having preferably the form of a leaf spring the innar end of which is arranged in a diametrical groove 39 on the underside of the bushing and engages with the lower end of the bolt head :53 while its outer end is arranged in a groove ll) arranged on the underside of the swivel or supporting link and leading to the threaded opening 29, and said retaining plate being held in place by a screw 41 which fastens the same to the top of the groove 40, as shown in Figures 3 and at.
It l'olhovs from this construction that the compressor jaw may be removed without liability of bolt 51 dropping to a position where it would not be readily available for reconnecting another jaw with the respective swivel link, while at the same time the bushing is prevented from turning a .pleie rotation and thus avoids the possibilir; of wholly unscrewing the same from the swivel arm and deranging the mechainsra.
the compressor arms are moved inwardly so that their front parts embrace the barrel. the jaws engage with different parts of its periphery and in doing so the jaws rock on the supporting links due to the swivel connection between the same so that the jaws are free to adapt themselves to the shape of the barrel, and at the same time the compressor arms are capable of moving inwardly independently of the jaws due to the yielding connection between the jaws and arms. thereby adapting the compressor to varying resistances of diiferent parts of the barrel and enabling the same to gradually compress the barrel into the proper shape to receive the hoops and heads.
it will be apparent from the foregoing that these means ali'ord ample facility for readily interchanging ditlerent sizes of compressor jaws to suit the sizes of the barrels which are being mamifactured. also that sufficient freedom for horizontal oscillation of the jaws is provided to permit the latter to adapt themselves to barrels which may not be perfectly circular: and that. the several parts are not liable to get out of order or misplaced during the ordinary use and method of operating the machine.
I claim as my invention:
1. A machine of the character described, comprising compressor arms adapted to embrace a barrel. a plurality of supporting links each pivoted at one end on one of said arms. compressor jaws each pivoted on the opposite end of one of said links. stop means for arresting the inward movement of each of said links on its respective arm, and tension means for holding each of said links yieldingly in its innermost position.

A machine of the character described comprising compressor arms adapted to embrace a barrel, supporting links each pivoted at one end on one of said arms and provided at its other end with an opening, a bushing rotatable in said opening, and a jaw mounted on said bushin 3. A machine of the character described comprising compressor arms adapted to embrace a barrel, supporting links each pivoted at one end on one of said arms and provided at its other end with an opening which is internally screw threaded, a bushing having an external screw thread cooperating with the thread of said opening. and a jaw mounted on said bushing.
4 A machine of the character described comprising compressor arms adapted to embrace a barrel, supporting links each pivoted at one end on one of said arms and provided at its other end with an opening which is internally screw threaded, a bushing having an external screw thread cooperating with the thread of said opening, and provided at its upper end with serrations, a jaw having a shank provided with serrations engaging the serrations of said bushing, and a fastening connecting said shank and bushing.
5. A machine of the character described comprising compressor arms adapted to embrace a barrel, supporting links each pivoted at one end on one of said arms and provided at its other end with an opening which is internally screw threaded, a bushing having an external screw thread cooperating with the thread of said opening and having a groove in its lower end, a jaw mounted on said bushing, and a locking plate mounted on said link and engaging the groove in said bushing.

A machine of the character described comprising compressor arms adapted to embrace a barrel, supporting links each pivoted at one end on one of said arms and provided at its other end with an opening and also having a groove leading to said opening, a bushing rotatable in said opening and provided at its lower end with a groove, a locking plate arranged in said grooves and secured to said link, and a jaw mounted on top of said bushin 7 A machine of the character described comprising compressor arms adapted to embrace a barrel, supporting links each pivoted at one end on one of said arms and provided at its other end with an opening and also having a groove leading to said opening, a bushing rotatable in said opening and provided at its lower end with a groove, a locking plate arranged in said grooves and secured to said link, a jaw having a shank engaging the top of said bushing, and a bolt for connecting said bushing and jaw and engaging its upper part with said jaw and adapted to engage its lower part with said plate.
8. A machine of the character described comprising compressor arms adapted to embrace a barrel and provided with stop lugs, supporting links pivoted on said arms and adapted to engage said lugs to limit the inward movement of the same on said arms, jaws mounted on said links, and tension means for yieldingly holding the links in their innermost position comprising a tension bolt passing through each of said lugs and having its inner end connected with the respective lug and a shoulder on its outer end. and a spring surrounding each of said bolts and bearing at its inner end against the adjacent link and at its outer end against said shoulder.
9. A machine of the character described comprising compressor arms adapted to embrace a barrel, supporting links pivoted on said arms and each provided with a stop lug, a bushing rotatable on each link adjacent to the stop lug thereof, a jaw having a shank which engages said bushing and provided with a slot which receives said stop lug, and a fastening connecting each bushing with the shank thereon.
