R. WARF'F COMBINATION WRENCH Filed Feb. 20, 1924 Patented Nov. 17, 1925.
UNITED STATES ROBERT WARFF, 0F SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA.
COMBINATION WRENCH.
Application filed February 20, 1924. Serial No. 693,971.
To all whom t may concern.' v
Be it known that I, ROBERT VVARFF, a citizen of the United States, residing at San Francisco, in the county of San Francisco and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Oombination Wrenches, of which the following is a specification.
This invention vpertains to wrenches for the use of mechanics, and the object is to provide a combination wrench of novel design and which may be adapted for use in several ways and for several different purposes.
In the drawing- Figure 1 is a sideF elevation of the wrench, the socket bar being omitted;
Fig. 2 is an edge view, the socket bar being omitted; v
Fig. 3 is a side elevation showing the socket bar assembled in place;
Fig. 4 is an edge view showing the socket bar in place; and
Fig. 5 is a detail of the sliding jaw.
In carrying out this invention, I provide a flat wrench shank 1, which is made thick enough to afford the requisite rigidity and yet thin enough and with straight and parallel edges 2 to serve as ruling edges. One or both of these edges may be marked off into inches and fractions thereof, as shown at one of the edges in the drawing'.
One end of this shank is reduced to form a screw-driver 3, and at the opposite end is rigidly mounted a permanent wrench jaw 4. The jaw 4 is preferably formed integrally with the shank 1 and slightly greater in thickness, and is set exactly perpendicular to the shank 1, so that this aw and shank may be employed as a small square, if desired. The end of the jaw 4 adjacent the shank is extended slightly as shown at 5, to serve as a hammer. The opposite end of the jaw 4 is tapered off in the plane of the jaw and shank, as shown at 6. At the juncture of the shank 1 with the jaw 4 is formed a squared nut-engaging aperture 7, which is set at an angle of degrees relative to the edges of the shank 1 and jaw 4. Another similar nut-engaging aperture 8 is formed medially through the shank 1.
A sliding jaw 9 is provided of the same thickness as the jaw 4 and having a shank c the angular edges of the apertures 7 and 8` as the shank 12 is moved up to those apertures. A set-screw 14 is threadedly mounted through one side of the shank 12 and the inner end thereof bears upon the face of the shank las means for locking the shank 12 in any set position. A square socket bar 15 is provided, adapted to slide freely through the aperture 8 of the shank 1, and this socket bar has a threaded end 16 upon which may be screwed socket wrenches 17 of various standard sizes.
This implement has various uses. The bar 15 being removed, the jaw 9 may be locked slightly spaced from the jaw 4, and theV device used as a nail puller; the apertures 7 and 8 may be used for turning nuts; a measure, a rule, a square, a hammer, and a screwdriver are also afforded. By inserting the bar 15 through the aperture 8 and then locking the shank 12 tightly down upon the bar 15, as indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 3, an excellent socket wrench is provided, the shank 1 then serving as a handle for turning the bar' 15.
Vhile I have herein described a certain specific manner and method of constructing and assembling the elements of my invention, it is understood that I may vary from the same in minor details, not departing from the spirit of my invention, so as best to construct a practical device for the purpose intended, as defined in the appended claim.
I claim:
In a device of the kind described, a flat, rule-like main shank having nut-engaging apertures formed therein; a sliding jaw and shank mounted upon the main shank, the shank of the sliding jaw having notches formed therein adapted to register with tlu` nut-engaging apertures of the main shank; and means for locking the sliding jaw in any set position upon the main shank.
In testimony whereof I aiix my signature. v
ROBERT WARFF.
