This invention relates to cutting machines and supporting means therefor, and more particularly to a cutting machine of the reciprocating type having a Hat base plate of relatively great area which supports the cutting mechanism and the driving motor therefor, and to a Vsupporting plate having means cooperating with the base plate for supporting the machine in inverted position.
In my copending application for cutting machine, Serial No. 297 ,535, filed Aug. 4, 1928 I have disclosed a machine having a flat base plate which supports the cutting tool operating mechanism and is moved over the Work in the use of the machine. When this machine is used for sawing, it is desirable that it be held stationary in inverted positionand the work moved relative to the tool.`
One of the main objects of my invention is to provide quick detachable means for releasably securing the base plate of the machine to a supporting .structure in inverted position, such means rendering it possible to use the machine either for sawing or, by removing the machine, for cutting material by movement of the machine thereover. Another object is to provide supporting means of simple and inexpensive construction adapted to permit ready insertion and removal of the base plate of the machine.
Further objects and advantages of my invention will appear from the detail description.

The cutting machine is provided with a substantially rectangular base plate 1 upon which is suitably mounted an electric motor 2 of suitable type, this motor having driving connection, through suitable mechanisms1 with a reciprocating plunger 3. The entire machine, including the motor and the mechanisms for, reciprocating the plunger, is supported upon one face of the plate 1 so as to be readily moved over material being out, the plate resting upon and sliding over the material, when desired.
Base plate 1 is provided, at its forward end, with a recess or cutout 4 of substantially V-shape and with forwardly extending elements 5 defining the sides of this recess. A post 6 is suitably secured to the forward end of each of the extensions 5 and is provided with a collar or shoulder 7 spaced away from the extension 5 of the plate 1. A suitable knob 8 is screwed or otherwise suitably secured upon each of the posts 6, these knobs providing hand grips or handles for moving the machine over the work, as above set forth. A tool holder 9 is mounted upon plunger 3 for reciprocation therewith and is connected to the plunger for turning movement about the same. This tool holder receives a suitable tool, such as a saw blade 10, secured therein by set screws 11, or in any other suitable manner. A sleeve 12 is mounted about the plunger 3 for relative turning movement and has a disc 13 secured thereon, at one end, adjacent a housing 14 for the plunger operating mechanism. This disc is held against movement away Jfrom the housing by a suitable clip 15 which engages about the disc and is secured to the housing. When the machine is disposed in upright position upon base plate 1, and is moved over the work, as previously mentioned, disc 13 provides convenient means for turning sleeve 12 to position the tool 10 relative to the work,
and clip 15 holds the disc 13, and consequently sleeve 12, against downward movement. An arm 16 is secured to the other end of sleeve 12 and slidably receives a presser bar 17, which also passes through the tool holder 9 beyond the tool 10. A presser foot 18 is secured upon one end of this bar and the other end of the bar is slidable in a thimble 19, secured to disc 13. The bar 17 has pin and slot connection with the thimble to prevent relative turning of the bar, and an extension coil spring 2O is confined between the thimble and a collar 21 secured on the bar in a suitable manner, this spring being mounted about the bar.
The spring urges the presser bar toward the work. This presser bar 17 is provided with a notch 22, adapted to receive a holding plate 23 slidable on arm 16 for holding the presser foot 18 in inoperative position away from the work. The plate 23 is slotted at its outer end. at 17a, to t about boss 17, and is also slotted at its inner end to provide arms 23a which operate in grooves 12a provided in sleeve 12 contiguous to the face of arm 16 upon which plate 23 slides. When the machine is moved over the material to be cut, the presser foot 18 is in lowered position and contacts the work. When the machine is disposed in inverted position, however, and the work is moved relative to the cutting tool, the presser foot is held in inoperative position away from the work by the plate 23. The machine illustrated is more fully disclosed in my copending application for cutting machine, and need not be described herein in more detail, it being sufficient to note that this machine comprises a substantially rectangular 'base plate, a reciprocating plunger, and means for reciprocating this plunger, the plunger and the ep erating means therefor being all mounted upon the plate.
This machine is well adapted for sawing sheet material by being moved over the material in upright position, such material being supported in any suitable manner to provide ample clearance for the saw blade below the sheet being cut or sawed. It is frequently desirable, however, to have the machine fixed and move the work relative to the saw blade or cutting tool. For this purpose, I provide a support having means whereby the base plate 1 of the machine can be quickly and easily secured thereto, thus supporting the machine in inverted position. The support includes a metal supporting plate 24 of substantially rectangular shape and correspending in thickness to the base plate 1. Supporting plate 24 is provided with a substantially rectangular opening 25 corresponding in size and shape to base plate 1.
This openingv is provided at the forward end thereof with a substantially V-shaped extension 26, which lits into V-shaped recess 4 of the base 1 and centers the base late in opening 25. Extension 26 is provide at its vertex, with an opening 27 which defines, with the vertex portion of recess 4, a circular opening which accommodates the cutting tool or saw blade 10 and permits movement of the saine about the plunger 3.
A reenforcing frame 28, formed of angle iron, is riveted or otherwise suitably secured to the under face of plate 24, the rearward portion of this frame being bent into rectangular shape and extending about the rearward portion of opening 25. The upper flange 29 of frame 28 projects inwardly across the opening at the sides and rearward end thereof, at 30 and 31, respectively. This provides supporting elements upon which the rearward portion of base plate 1 seats. It will be noted (Figure 3) that the side elements 30 are disposed remote from the forward end of the openin 25. The arms of frame 28 are bent outwar y awa from the opening, a short distance be on the elements 30, to provide forwardly iverging members 32 which are ot' assistance in directing the. base plate :r:
through opening 25 when positioning the machine upon the supporting plate 24.
A triangularly shaped latch plate 33 is slidably mounted upon the under face of plate 24 at the front of opening 25, the base of plate 33 bein toward the opening. This plate is confine between the under face of plate 24 and shoulders 34 of studs 35 suitably secured in plate 24, plate 33 having slots 36 through which the studs extend.
A rod 37 is mounted at one end upon a pin 38, which is suitably secured in plate 24, this rod being confined between shoulder 39 of the pin and a cotter pin 40 secured thro-ugh pin 38. Plate 33 is provided with a slot 41, through which the pin 38 extends. This rod extends, at its other end, through one arm of an angle bracket 42 secured to plate 33, and an expansion coil spring 43 is mounted about the rod and conned between this bracket and shoulders 44 adjacent the pin end of the rod. This spring acts to hold the latch plate 33 in its inner operative position. An angularly disposed linger 45 is provided at the outer or apex end of plate to facilitate drawing this plate outwardly into inoperative position.
Plate 33 is provided, adjacent each side of its base, with a slot 46 which opens toward the openin 25 of supporting plate 24. These "3 slots are a apted for reception of the posts 6. Plate 33, when in its inner operative position, engages between the under face of hase plate 1 and shoulders 7 of posts 6. The latch plate thus acts to support the forward end of base plate 1 and also to lock this base plate against vertical movement in either direction relative to the supporting plate 24. This provides simple and highly elncieut means for effectively securing the supporting villll lill litt) plate and the base plate.. of the machine te gether'in such manner as to permit quiclrL dtaolnnent thereof. f
I'haveillustrated the `supporting plate 24 as provided, at each corner, with a socket member 47 suitably secured thereto, as by rivets 48. These socket members receive the upper ends of legs or standards 49, the upper endportions of which are reduced at 50 and provided with circumferential grooves 52 which receive the inner ends of set screws 5,3;
The uprights or'le'gs 49 may be secured to the plate 24 in any other suitable or preferred manner. Each leg 49 is provided, at the lower end thereof, with a foot 54, secured thereto 'in any suitable manner,`this foot extending outwardly beyond the leg and being suitably` bored and counter-sunk adjacent its outer end, at 55, .for reception of a suitable securing member, such as :a screw, for anchoring the foot to a supporting structure, such as a work bench. The supporting plate 24 and associated legs 49 constitute a table by means of which' the cutting machine can be readily supported in inverted position above a bench or other suitable support and in spaced relation thereto.
It is not essential that the supporting plate 24 bemounted upon the legs-49, as this sup* porting plate can be set into the upper face' of a bench or table, so as to be flush therewith, the bench or table having a suitable opening through which the base plate 1 ot the machine can be inserted to be positioned in opening 25 of the supporting plate. When it is desired to position the'cutting machine upon the supporting plate 24, it is tirst moved beneath supporting plate 24 and base plate 1 isinserted througlibpening 25 in advance of the supporting elements 30'and at anv `1in-1 clination to plate 24, the machine being held in inverted position. vAs base plate l is inserted through opening 25, it is moved into parallelism therewith, so as to seat upon the elements 30 and 31, the latch late 33 being moved into inoperative position to permit movement ofextensions of the base plate into the forward portion of opening 25 at' opposite sides of extension 26 ot the support-r ing plate. w
The latch plate 33 is then released and is moved by spring 43into operative position, so as to engage about posts 6 between the base plate and shoulders 7. The base plate is thus effectively secured in opening 25 of the supporting plate with its upper face flush with the upper face of plate 24. The electric motor 2 is then connected into an electric circuit in a suitable manner, so as to reciprocate the plunger 3 and the saw blade 10 carried thereby. This saw blade projects upwardly be- `vond base plate 1 through the opening defined by the recess 2 of base plate 1 and the recess 27 of extension 26 of the supporting plate 24. The work is then moved toward the cutting tool which, due to its eccentric mounting `on the plunger, moves about the plunger `so asto be in the line of pressure exerted on the Work, thus assuring that the cutting toolwill accurately follow the line of the pattern being cut. By withdrawing the latch plate 33, base plate 1 of the machine can be tilted downwardly and for wardly and readily withdrawn from opening 25, thus detaching the machine from the supporting p-late, so that it may be used independently thereof by moving the plate over the Work as previously set forth.
It is not essential that the base plate 1 be inserted through opening 25 of the support` ing plate. By removing the knobs 8, or suiiciently reducing the size thereof, the machine can be lowered through opening 25 until the base plate seats upon anges 30 and 21. It is then secured in position by the latch plate 33 and posts 6 in the manner above described.
What I claim is 1. In combination, a cutting machine comprising a base plate and cutting tool actuating means carried thereby, a supporting plate having an opening adapted for reception of said base plate, supporting members projecting inwardl of the opening for a ortion of the perip iery thereof and disposed) below the top face of the supporting plate, the supporting member terminating short of one end of the opening, said base plate being insertible through the opening from said end thereof and at an inclination and from beneath and beyond said supporting members, and means beyond said supporting members for supporting the base plate and for releasably securing itagainst movement relative to said supporting plate.
2. In combination, a cutting machine comprising a base plate and cutting tool actuating means carried thereby, a supporting plate having an ,opening receiving the base plate, members depending from the base plate and eachhaving a shoulder spacedtrom the base plate, and a latch plate mounted on the under face of said supporting plate and movable into and out of position to engage between the base plate and the shoulders ot' said members, said supporingr plate having` elements extending inwardly of the opening and beneath the base plate and said elements being unobstructed at one end of the opening for insertion and withdrawal ot the base plate.
3. In combination, a cutting machine comprisinga base plate and cutting tool actuating means carried thereby, a supporting plate having an opening receiving said base plate, supporting anges secured to the supporting plate andprojecting inwardly of the opening beneath the base plate, said flanges terminating short of one Wall of the opening, members depending from the base plate adjacent said wall of the opening, and means on Vthe under face of the supportin lplate and cooperating with said `members or releasai by Vsecuring the base plate to the supporting p ate. i
4. In combination, a cutting machine coanprising a substantially rectangular base plate and cutting tool actuating means carried thereby, a supporting plate having an open ing conforming to and receiving said base plate, supporting flanges secured to the sup+ porting plate at opposite sides of the open ing and projecting inwardly of the opening beneath said base plate, said flanges terminating short of one end of the openlng, posts depending from the b-ase plate and each prei vided with an outwardly projecting shoulder spaced away from said base plate, said posts providing handles adjacent one end of the base plate to facilitate handling of the mal chine in positioning the base plate thereof in the supporting plate and a latch plate slidai bly mounted on the supporting plate at said end of the opening and engaging between said shoulders and the base plate.
5. In combination, a cutting machine comprising a substantially rectangular base plate and cutting tool actuating means carried thereby, said plate having a V-shaped recess extending from the tool end thereof, a supporting plate having a rectangular opening receiving said base plate and provided at one end of the opening with a V-shaped ex'-I tensio-n fitting into the recess of the base plate, said extension having an opening delining with the vertex of the recess a cutting tool opening, flanges secured to the supports ing 'plate and projecting inwardly of the opening beneath said base plate, the flanges terminating remote from said extension, members depending from the tool 'end of the plate, and securing means on the supporting plate cooperating with said members foi re-` leasably securing the base plate to the sup porting plate. z
6. In combination, a cutting machine come prising a substantially rectangular base plat/8 and cutting tool actuating means carried thereby, a supporting plate having an opening receiving the base plate, supporting members secured to the supporting plate and extending across the opening beneath the base plate, members depending from the base plate at the under face of the tool end anal adjacent each side thereof, each of Saidmefmhers having a shoulder spaced away from the base plate. and a latch plate slidable on the supporting plate and engageable between said shoulders and said base plate.
7. In means for supporting a cutting ma` chine having a base plate, a supporting plebe` having an opening adapted for reception of the base plate by insertion of said base plate through the opening` at an inclination there: to, supporting members on the supporting plate and extending inwardly of the opening,

In combination, a supporting plate havi ing a substantially rectangular opening, an angle member secured to the Iunder `face of the plate and extending about one endV and two sides of the opening, thewlateral arms of said member being bent outwardly intermediate their ends and diverg'ing toward the other end of the opening, the upper flange of the angle member projectingy into the opening at the adjacent lend and the sides thereof to the bends' in the arms of said member, and a latch plate slidably mounted on the under face of the plate at said other end of the opening. 10. In combination, a table having an opening in the topzthereof, a cutting machine comprising a flat base late and a jig saw'f and mechanism `for reciprocating the same?, said plate being disposed in said opening and'supplementmg the table top to form-a Working surface,the mechanism lying below the plate and thejig saw extendin therethrough, members carried by the tagble top and extendi beneath and supporting tlie plate at the si es thereof, said members being unobstructing at one end of the opening fon insertion and Withdrawal of the plate length Wise of said opening, and quick detachable means for securing the plate to thetable top adjacentsaid end of the opening.
