In bending rolls heretofore made, each roll consisted of two parts, one of'which was fixed to its 'roll shaft and the other oflwhich was adjustable toward and from the fixed partfto change the width of the groove. 7 Rolls of this kind,'however, cannot be adjusted to accommodate bars which. are wider at one edge than at the other edge. In order to render the outer part of theroll adjustable relatively to the inner fixed part, to varythe width of the groove formed between these two parts, the sleeve 5 is provided on its outerend with "acap 15 which may be integrally formed therewith and which has a centralaperture 16 through which an adjusting screw or stud 17 extends. The inner end of this screw or stud engages in a threaded hole in the end of the shaft E. The screw or stud 17 is also provided with an outwardly extending flange 13 which is adapted to bear against the innerface of the cap portion of the sleeve 5, and if desired, a bearing plate or washer 19may be inserted between this flange and the cap portion 15; The portion of the screw or stud 1'7 beyond the flange 18 is preferably also threaded, as indicated at 20, to receive a nut 21 engaging the outer face of the cap portion 15. The outer end of the screw or stud may also be provided with a head 22 by means of which the same can be turned. By means of this arrangement, the width of the groove between the walls 9 and 10 can be readily adjusted by first sli htly releasing thenut 21 and then turningthe screw 17 by means of the head 22 thereof. This causes the screw to enter into,
or move out of, the threaded hole in the end of. the shaft E and this movement of the screw causes a corresponding movement of the sleeve 5. When the desired adjustment is reached, the nut 21 is tightened so that the parts will be securely locked in place. It will be noted that in this roll only one of the side walls of the groove, namely, the side wall 9, is adjusted, the other side wall 10 remaining in fixed relation to the shaft E.
Referring now to the roll (3, this roll also includes an inner sleeve 25 which, in the construction shown,is journalled to rotate freely about the stud or fixed shaftF, a bearing sleeve 26 being for this'purpose inserted between the sleeve 25 and the stud The sleeve 25 near the inner end of the roll has a radially extending flange 27 to which a cylindrical part or sleeve28 may be rigidly secured, for example, by means of welding as indicated at 29. This adjustingscrew 35. is preferably also provided with an annular, outwardly extending flange 36 adapted to bear against the inner face of the web 31, a bearing disk or washer 37 beingprovided for this purpose in the construction shown. The portion of this screw 35 which extends beyond the transverse web 31 of the sleeve 25 is preferably also threaded and adapted to receive a nut 38, which may be suitably locked in place on this end of the adjusting screw 35 in any suitable manner. 'Fcrexample, this nut may be split, as indicated at 39, anda clamping screw 40, having a threaded engagement with a part of the nut 39 at one side of the split and pressing against the other side, may be employed to lock the nut 38 securely on the threads of the bolt 35. Any other means for this purpose may be employed.-
Any suitable means may also be provided; for locking the adjusting screw .35 in .the threaded hole in the fixed shaft or axle F and, in the construction shown for this purpose, the screw 35 may be split, as indicated by the slot 42 therein,
and the split end may be expanded to grip the wall of the threaded aperture in the axle or shaft F. The gripping means may include a bolt 43 which extends lengthwise through a bore or central aperture in the adjusting screw 35, and the inner end of this locking bolt is provided with a tapered head 44 which preferably engages with a correspondingly tapered end of the bore in-the adjusting screw 35. Consequently, it will be obvious that if the locking bolt 43 is drawn outward- 1y with reference to the adjusting screw 35, as by tightening a nut 45 engaging the threaded end of the bolt 43 and bearing against the end of the screw 35, the tapered sides of the head 44 will engage with the correspondingly tapered inner face of the bore in the adjusting screw and will thus spread ,or'separate the lower split ends of this screw, and thus press the same into engagement withthe threaded hole in the fixed shaft F.
I Consequently, the adjusting screw 35 can be easily adjusted lengthwise of the shaft or axle F and such adjustment results in a corresponding adjustment of the part of the bending roll 0 which includes the sleeve'25 and annular member 23.
To facilitate such adjustment the outer end of the screw 35 is preferably formed to enable it to be gripped by a wrench, for example, by providing a hexagonal end 46 on the screw 35. Consequently, when it is desired to change the adjustment'ofthe sleeve 25 and ofthe wall 30 of the groove, the nut 45 is first loosened and the outer end of the bolt 43 may be tapped slightly to release'the wedge end 44 thereof from the bore in the adjusting screw 35. The screw 35 is then released from its clamping action and is free to be turned by means'of a. wrench engaging the head 46 of the screw. The flange 36 and the nut 38 will transmit to the sleeve25 any longitudinal adjustment of the screw 35,'and when the desired adjustment has been made, the nut 45 is tightened to again clamp the screw 35 in its adjusted position.

for example, by means of bolts 51 and the outer end of this extension is threaded to engage with 4 a threaded portion 52 at the outer end of the sleeve 25. The threaded part of the extension 50 may be split and provided at opposite sides of the split with lugs or projections 53 through which a clamping bolt 54 extends for clamping the threaded part of the extension 50 against the threaded portion 52 to hold the collar 48 in fixed relation to the sleeve 25. 'When it is desired to change the adjustment of the sleeve 48, the bolt 54 is released so that the extension 50 with the sleeve '48 secured thereto can be freely rotated lengthwise of the threadedportion 52. The rotation of the sleeve 48and extension 50 provides for the adjustment of these parts lengthwise of the axis of this roll, and when the desired adjustment has been made, the bolt 54 is again tight-- lie if desired. of the side walls of the. groove ofthe inner roll will, therefore, be. spaced approximately equidistant from a plane extending midway between the side walls of all of the grooves of the rolls and midway of the work.-
By means of this "arrangement, the-1 machine can be readily adjusted to operate on bars of different shapes or sizes without removing the rolls,
from their shafts or bearings. While the inner roll has been described as having both of the side walls of the groove adjustable, it will be obvious that this arrangement can be reversed byproviding an adjustment on the two outer rolls similar to that shown on the inner roll in the construction illustrated, and by making the inner roll of a constructionsimilar to that illustrated in connection with the outer rolls. In, such a case,
the inner roll would be adjusted with a groove of sufficient width to receivethe enlarged or upset edge of the bar and the side walls of the grooves of the outer rolls would be set to form narrower grooves, but equi-distant from the central plane of the bar. Since, however, ityis only necessary to provide an adjustment of. both side walls of the groove or grooves at either one or the other edge of the work, it is,, of course, more expedient to provide such adjustment only on the inner roll and employing adjustment for, only one groove wall for the outside rolls.
I claim as. my invention:
1. A bending machine roll forbending flat bars on edge, including partsforming opposite sides of a groove, a cylindrical part forming the bottom of the groove and against which the edges of the bars bear, said side parts having portions connecting therewith extending to one end of. said roll, and means on saidend of said roll and cooperating with saidportions for adjusting each of said side parts relatively to the other.
2. A bendingmachine forbendingflat bars on' edge and having rolls arranged inside andoutside with reference to the curvature of the work, said outside rolls having adjustable parts ar ranged to form grooves of different widths to re-. ceive the work, said inside roll having parts forming-the side wallsof agro'ove, and means'for'ad- "justing both of-said 'parts toward" and from a "plane passing through the 'centers of the grooves of said outside rolls; allfof said rolls having *cylindrical portions forming-the bottoms of-said groove and against which the work bears:

6. A'bending machine roll having parts adapted to cooperate to form between" them an annular groove, one of said parts including a radial- 7 1y extending "part having acylindrical member 1 secured thereto, one end of said cylindrical member forming a-side'wall of said groove, the other 120 part of said roll including a sleeve adapted to telescope into said cylindrical member and forming the base of said groove, and having a flange forming. the other sidewall of said groove, and means for adjusting one of said parts relatively to the other to vary the width of said groove.

slindricalportion of less diameter than said other part and movable into and out of a corresponding recess in the other part during adjustment of said parts relatively to each other, said cylindrical portion bearing against the edges of the bars, and means for adjusting said annular parts in opposite directions from the center of said groove. l

outside with reference. to the curvature of the work, each of said rolls having a work receiving groove therein provided with a bottom wall adapted to engage an edge of the work to-exert bending pressure thereon, said grooves also having side walls which are adapted to engage portions of the sides of the work, and means for adjusting the side walls of the groove of the inside roll to form on said inside roll a groove of greater width than the grooves of said outside rolls andwith the .side walls of the groove .of said inside roll spaced substantially equidistant from the central plane of the work.
