UNITED STATES PATENT OEEIoE.
CALEB STROBEL AND FREDRIOK STROBEL, OF WALDO, OHIO.
IMPROVEM ENT l N LOG-TURNERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 204,391, dated May 28, 1878; application filed May 8, 1878. a
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, CALEB STRoBEL and FREDRIGK STRonEL, of Waldo, in the county of Marion and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Log-Turners; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
The nature of our invention consists in the construction and arrangement of a device for turning saw-logs on saw-mill carriages, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In the annexed drawings, to which reference is made, Figure 1 is a vertical section through the line at m, Fig. 3, showing a front View of our invention. Fig. 2 is a cross-section on the line 1 y, Fig. 1; and Fig. 3 is a plan view of our invention.
A represents the frame-work of an ordinary saw-mill, with ways B B, upon which the carriage 0 moves. D is the saw-arbor, upon which is a pulley, a, connected by a belt, I), with a pulley, E, on a counter-shaft, d. This shaft 01, by means of bevel-gears e e,comn1unicates motion to a shaft, F, running at right angles to the shaft d, as shown.
The shaft F is movable lengthwise in its bearings, and provided with a lever, G, by means of which said shaft is thrown out of gear with the shaft d. On the shaft F is a Windlass, H, with ratchet-wheel I.
L is a lever, placed loosely on the shaft F at the side of the ratchet wheel, and provided with a pawl, J, to take into said ratchetwheel. On the Windlass H is wound a rope, h, which passes around an elevated pulley, P, and has a hook, i, in its end,.which is to be driven into the log. The pulleyP is mounted in a vertically-swinging frame, P.
When, by means of the lever G, the windlass is thrown in gear, the rope h winds upon the Windlass and turns the log on the carriage 0. As soon as the log is turned as far as required, the Windlass is thrown out of gear again, when the pawl J in the ratchetwheel holds the log.
Having thus fully described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The windlass H, with rope h, on the shaft F, the ratchet-wheel I and pawl J, and elevated pulley P, mounted in the verticallyswinging frame P, in combination with the saw-mandrel and a mechanism connecting said mandrel with the shaft F, substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
In testimony that we claim the foregoing as our own we have hereto affixed our signatures in the presence of two witnesses.
CALEB STROBEL. FREDRICK STROBEL.
