For the purpose of the shear aDRrOPli'SQl limdrpower operation but it will illustration, the'design of either in a xed location shown in the drawings is one that is' be apparent that certain features ofA novelty; such as the-'peculiar relation ofthe cutting blades with` respect to their supporting devices is equally applicableto the use of 'mechanical power.'v
In the form shown inthe drawings, the devicev is designed for vcutting a 'horizontally disposed sheet of metal and comprises a lower cutter blade IV and-an upper cutter blade 2 that cooperate forl shearing the material. The'bottom blade I .iscarried by ai helicoidally warped U-shapedy bed member 3 which has a free siderv arm 4 that is tapered to a point and recessed to receive the lower-hard steel blade IV which is fastened by machine screws 5. -The iixed or body side arm I- of Athis U-shaped bed is rigidly and integrally connected to an upwardly and rearwardly curvedgooseneck frame 8 whichoverhangs the bosoml portion 9 of the U-shaped bed 3v and is apertured at I to receive the'fulcrum bolt II on whichis mounted the lever I2 that carries the uppery cutter blade 2. This lever is of U shape to provide a depending tongue "I2.I for supporting the blade and to conform with the insidieV vertical contour of the gooseneck 8 vso as to permit of maximum sweep of the sheet over the bed 3 and blade 2.'1
The novel helicoidally warped upper surface of the bed member l3 and the wedge-like sectional contour of this bed which tapers inwardly to" a thin edgueat the inner margin ofthe throat de fined by the U-shaped contour 'of the bed, as well' as the complete freedom of the pointed free arm 4 of the U-shaped bed lfrom any obstruction either above or below the bed, has greatly enhanced thev extent of'permissible relative turning of the sheet that is being worked'upon with respecttothef.,

'I'he bed member 3 is also provided with a Vsecond lug 22 to which is attached a lever armv 23 which is similarly socketed vand provided with a set screw 24 for securing it to its lug.
In the form shown the gooseneck or frame arm 8 is provided with a sector of gear teeth 25 disposed in an arc concentric with the fulcrum apertures It and shaped to mesh with a pinion sector 21 that is journaled on a bolt 28 carried `by the lever I2.` The pinion 21 is rigidly mounted on a lever arm 29 which provides the powerl for this hand-operated tool.
A link`30 connects the bolts Il and 28 on the side of the gooseneck 8 that is away from the lever I2 and thus balances the strain on theV bolts Il and 28.
In operation, when the device is mounted on a bench by means of the brackety I and arm I4, it
is located a'considerable distance away fromsthej rearwardly arched gooseneck frame member rigid on the other side karm of said bed and carrying a fulcrum for said lever located above and rearward of said blades, and an arm for supporting said bed located on the side arm of said bed that is remote from the sideA arm that carries said lower blade, said bed supporting arm extending away from said bed in a location generally above the level of the .bottom of said bed, whereby no part of the shear is positioned to interfere with the free movement beneath said bed of work material acted upon by said shear.

A shear comprising .upper and lower cutter blades, a horizontally disposed u-shaped bed llav-v than can conveniently be manipulated by the-operrator in the elevated position of the device when it is connected with the work bench, the shear can beremoved from the beam I4 by releasing ,the set screw -2I and ,withdrawing the lug I3 and then, handling and operating the d eviceas an ordinary hand shear by means of the lever arms 23 andY 28. l There is considerable advantage inv the manipulationof the tool throughv the factthat the lever arms 23 and 29'extend forwardly from the cutter blades instead of rearwardly as is customarydwith, shears.Y vThis enables the operator -to guide the tol ,byV pulling it along by rneanslof the handles 23 and 29 insteadY of thrusting it along and ening one side arm carrying said lower blade, a le- -ver carrying said upper blade, an upwardlyand rearwardly varched gooseneck frame member rigid on the other sideV arm of said bedand carrying a fuicrurn for `said lever located 'above and reark Ward of' said blades, and an arm'for supporting said bed locatedon the side arm ofsaidbed that is remote from saidf'lower blade, lsaid supporting arm'extending horizontally away from said bed in a location generally above the level of thebote ytom of said bed, whereby no part of the shear is positioned tointerfere with the free movement beneath saidbed of work saidshear.`v Y i l Y .3.
