Description

cui
I. E. PALMER, OF ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI.
TACKLE-BLOCK.
Speccation forming part of Letters Patent No. 25,978, dated November 1, 1859; Ressued September 8, 1863, No. 1,534.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, I. E. PALMER, of the city and county of St. Louis and State of Missouri, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Tackle-Blocks and Pulleys; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawing, making part of this specification, in which- Figure l shows a plan of the block and pulley combined, and F ig. 2 shows one side of the pulley, and F ig. 3 the other, and F ig. et a plan of block.
This my invention consists of a peculiar formation of the block and pulley and in a certain relative position of the said forms, when the two are combined, so that a rope or fall may be jammed in any required position, thus securing the said rope or fall without tying it.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my said invention I will proceed to describe the construction and operation thereof.
The dra-wing` shows the block made in the form of a sphere, with a recess cut in one side of it, into which the sheave or pulley is introduced. This recess has a peculiar form, which is shown at A, Fig. t, and the pulley or sheave is made with a circular groove at one end-as an ordinary sheaveand the other end is made of a plane cyl.- inder form, as at B, after which a part of the lip which forms the circular groove is cut away, as at a., that is to say, a part of lip next the cylindrical end of the sheave,
the said lip being thus made to form a kind of cam, as shown at Fig. 8. Now if the rope be drawn up and down upon a vertical or horizontal plane the pulley will revolve freely in the block in either direction-but I. E. PALMER.
Vitnesses AMos BROADNAX, M. RISSMANN.
