Plate Mmonstitutes an -anchoring-rmeanssthrough which passesaaprod 46 at its forward end passing through a, vertical slot in the feed cam 39 and receiving a nut 41. Rearwardly of plate 44 a coil spring 43 surrounds the rod 46 and bears at its respective ends against said plate and nuts 43 on the rod. By adjusting the nuts 49, the pressure exerted by the spring against the nuts and the plate 44 is varied and thus the pull on feed cam 3:! regulated.
Slidably mounted on the bars I1 and I8 rearwardly of the part I4 is the part I (Fig. 5) comprising a motion imparting slide as well as a stock supporting and hold-down guide positioned at all times between the parts I4 and I5 at a medial point. The latter part comprises a pair of end members 50 and 5i integrally connected by a body 52 having a pair of depending oppositely facing L- shaped lugs 53 and 54. Parallel openings 55 through said members receive the bars I 1 and I8 and thus the part I5 is ment longitudinally of said bars.
Spaced upstanding cars 56 and 51, comprising portions of members 50 and El, have aligned openings 58 and 53 normal to the bars I1 and I8 and rotatively receiving the end portions of a shaft 60 which is parallel with the shaft 39 of part I4. A wear plate 51 is fastened to body 52 by screws 62 and above said wear plate 6| but secured to the members 50'and BI and thus movable With the wear plate, is a hold-down plate 63, the latter having its ends located in slots or recesses 64 in the opposed portions of said members 50 and 5|.
The rearwardmost part I6 (see Fig. 4) comprising a holding part, also includes a pair of end members 65 and 63 integrally connected by a body 61 having a depending L-shaped lug 58 and a depending straight lug or spud 69. A wear plate or combined wear and clamping plate 10 is secured against the upper side of body 31 by screws 68. In this connection it is noted that the upper surfaces of plates 43, SI and 10 are all in the same plane.
Upstanding ears H and 12 of members 65 and 66 have aligned Openings 13, normal to the bars I1 and I8 and receiving the end portions of a shaft 14. On said shaft is a mounting device 15 (similar to the mounting device 31 of part I4) partly embracing the shaft and secured thereto by screws 16. Lying against a fiat portion of shaft 14 between the ears H and 12 is a. hold cam 11 comprising a plate and binding screws 18 passing through vertical slots 13 in said hold cam secure the latter to the shaft.
Adjusting screws 80 held in adjusted positions by lock nuts 3| cooperate with the binding screws 13 for adjustment of the hold cam 11 in the same manner as that described when considering feed cam 39 and the screws 40 and M of part I4. Across the rear of the part I6 is an anchoring plate 82 secured in place to upstanding ears H and 12 by screws 83 and this plate is for the purpose of plate 44 of part I4. Thus, a rod 84 passes through plate 82 and a vertical slot 05 in hold cam 11 and is secured by a nut 84a. At the rear side of plate 82 a coil spring 86 surrounds the rod. and bears at its respective ends against the plate and a pair of nuts 81 and thus acting through the rod biases the cam plate.
An inverted L-shaped member 38 is secured to the rear edge of body 61, below the lower edge of plate 82, by screws 89 and has its upper longitudinal arm 30 provided with slots 9| extending longitudinally thereof and transverse with respect to bars I1 and I3. Guide rollers 92 are mounted on said arm 90 by screws 93 and serve to secure mounted for sliding move- 4 the rollers in adjusted relation, closer to or further from one another, depending on the width of stock being fed, with the limits made possible by said slots.
In the completely assembled Stock feed the parts I3 and I 6 are fixed with respect to one another and to the other parts. Thus, part I3 is fixed to the bars I1 and I8 by the screws 25 while the part I6 is also secured to said bars by screws 9-5. Secured on the bars I1 and I0 at the rear of part I4 are collars 93 fastened in place by screws 91.
Upstanding ears 98 and 99 of the end members I 9a and I9 of part I3 (see Fig. 6) have aligned Openings I00 receiving the end portions of a shaft IOI extending normal to the said bars. Shaft I M has an end portion I 02 extending at the outer side of ear 93. A member I03 includes a relatively long arm I04, a shorter arm I05 and a connecting portion I06, the latter straddling ear 99 and the inner ends of said member I03 pivoted by the shaft I02 to which it is fixed by a screw I 01.
The shaft 30 of part I5 mounts a cylindrical piece I08 integral with an upwardly and forwardly extending arm I09 pivotally connected at its forward end with the upper rear end of the arm I94 by a pivot pin III Thus arms I04 and I09 combine to form a, toggle. A screw I II may locate the shaft 60.
A laterally extending operating arm H2 includes a forward extension II 3 provided with countersunk openings II4 for the passage of screws I 5 securing said arm to the punch holder I2. At its laterally outer end, arm II 2 includes an eye H6 through which extends a vertical rod II1 clamped in position by nuts IIB threaded thereon and tightened against the upper and lower sides of said eye.
Vertically adjustable on the rod II 1 are upper and lower plates H0 and I20, respectively, keyed against rotation about the rod ing a vertical slot or groove I22 in the rod. Nuts I 23 and I24 at the upper and lower sides of plate III) are threaded to the rod H1 and are used for securing the plate in the desired adjusted position and nuts I25 and I26 at the upper and lower sides of plate F26 serve the same purpose for that plate.
Extending laterally from' the short arm I05 of member I03 is a rigid pin I21 held in place by a. screw I28. This pinextends between the plates H9 and I 20 and is adapted to be actuated by them as the arm II 2 is moved with the punch holder of a press as, for example, with the punch holder I2, to extend and collapse the toggle structure above described.
A rack I29 extending parallel with the rods I1 and I8 has its forward end portion located in the notch of the L-shaped lug or depending extension 29 of the part I4 and secured thereon and to said part by screws I30. The rear portion of this rack is aligned with the L-shaped depending lug 54 of the part I5 but is not secured thereto whereby there may be relative movement of part I5 and the rack.
A second rack I3I has its rear end portion located in the notch of the depending L-shaped lug 38 of the stationary part I6 and is secured thereto by screws I32. The rack I3I is aligned with the notch of the depending L-shaped lug 53 of part I5 but isnot secured thereto whereby relative movement may take place between the rack and the part in a path parallel with the longitudinal axis of the rack.

This relationship is clearly illustrated in Fig. 2. The advantage of this arrangement is that the stock is prevented from sagging or buckling between the hold cam i1 and the feed cam 39 by being supported at a mid point between these parts in any position of the feed lide M. As the stroke of part id determines the amount of the stock feed, it will be clear that with the means of the invention, for a small stroke of the press, a considerable movement of stock will be obtained.
When setting up for operation, assuming that the parts are secured to the bed and punch holder of a die set and the latter is mounted in a press, the gates are brought to the lowest point. Then the top plate H9 i adjusted downwardly on the rod Ill until said plate touches the pin i2! and the plate is locked in this position by the nuts I23 and IE4, with the slidable part i5 against the rearward stationary part If).
Next, upward movement of the gate is started but prior to the full back stroke the bottom plate I29 is adjusted upwardly on the rod II! for the proper stroke space between parts l5 and 16. This, in the embodiment disclosed, is one-half the stroke required in the slidable part I4 and now the collars 96 are set up against the slidable part It and locked. The feed cam plate 39 should be set at an angle of about twelve degrees for all strokes up to one thirty-second of an inch and less angle may be set for heavier stock.

The gear I33 is now rotated by engagement with the teeth of rack 13! and operates through the teeth of rack I29 to draw part l4 rearwardly. Retrogressive movement of the stock is prevented by hold cam 11. Because of the gear and rack structure the movement of part M will be twice the movement of part i5. As the opening stroke of the press progresses, plate I29 engages the pin I21 raising it and thereby operating to fold the described toggle structure and move part l5 forwardly on the bars I! and I8. As gear I33 is thus moved along the teeth of stationary rack I3I, the gear is rotated and meshing with the teeth of rack 129, shifts the latter forwardly and thus moves the part [4 and the feed cam 39 forwardly. At this time the feed cam is engaging the stock and the latter is dragged forwardly a distance equal to the forward movement of part l4. Because of the gear and rack structure, the part (4 will be given a forward or stock feeding movement for a distance or length of stroke twice that imparted to part l5.
Thus, while the stock feeding means of the invention is of general application, it may find particular use for the feeding of stock to a press having a short stroke.
Having thus set forth the nature of my invention, what I claim is:
In a strip stock feeding means, a forward transverse stationary mounting part, a rearward transverse stationary holding part longitudinally spaced from said forward stationary part having a stock feeding passage defined at its lower side by a stock supporting wear surface, longitudinal guide means extending between said stationary parts, a stock feeding slide mounted on said guide means for forward and rearward reciprocatory movement and having a stock feeding passage defined at its lower side by a stock supporting wear surface and longitudinally aligned with said passage of said rearward stationary part, a motion imparting slide mounted on said guide means between said rearward stationary part and said feeding slide for forward and rearward reciprocatory movement and having a stock feeding passage defined at its lower side by a stock supporting wear surface and longitudinally aligned with said passages of said rearward stationary part and said feeding slide, one-directional stock gripping means on said stationary part defining the upper side of its stock feeding passage adapted to permit forward movement and to restrain rearward movement of stock therethrough, one-directional stock gripping means on said feeding slide defining the upper side of its stock feeding passage adapted to grip stock and move it forwardly through the forward movement of said feeding slide and to move freely over said stock during the rearward movement of said feeding slide, stock hold-down means on said motion imparting slide defining the upper side of its stock feeding passage and adapted to move freely over said stock during both forward and rearward movements of said motion imparting slide, driving means to impart forward and rearward movement to said motion imparting slide, a horizontal longitudinally extending stationary rack fixed at its rearward end to said rearward stationary part, a horizontal longitudinally extending movable rack fixed at its forward end to said feeding slide, said racks being parallel and in laterally spaced overlapping relation at their inner ends, and a gear carried by and rotatable on said motion imparting slide and meshing with each of said racks for rolling engagement along said stationary rack and for imparting movement to said movable rack and thus to said feeding slide, whereby as said motion imparting slide is moved forwardly and rearwardly a given distance said feeding slide is moved forwardly and rearwardly twice such distance.
