CORKSCREW.`
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 276,804, dated May 1, 1883.
Application filed March 21, 1883. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MONROE GREEN, of Brooklyn, in'm the county ot' Kings and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Corkscrew, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description. .i
The invention consists in a frame through which a screw-tube passes, through which tube a rod passes, on the lower end of which a corkscrew is fastened, which is provided at its upper end with a beveled tooth adapted 'to eugage with a like tooth on the lower end of the screwtube,whereby if the screw-tube is turned to move downward theabove-mentionod teeth engage, whereby the corkscrew is screwed into the cork. If the screw-tube is turned so that it will rise, it will not turn the corkscrew,
but draw it upward, thereby drawing the cork out of the bottle.
The invention also consists in various parts and details and combinations ot' the same, as will be fully set forth hereinafter.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specication, in which similar letters ot' reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a longitudinal elevation of my improved corkscrew, showing how it is applied, and showing it in the position it has before it is screwed into the cork. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional elevation of the same on the line at x, Fig. 1, showing it screwed into the cork. Fig. 3 is a plan view ofthe same. Fig. 4 is a sectional plan view of the same on the line y y, Fig. 1. Fig. 5 is a sectional plan view ofthe same on the line e e, Fig. 1.
A U-shaped springi'rame, A, is provided at the end of each shank with a halfring, E, lined on the inner side with rubber C, which halfrings face each other. At the closed end it is provided with a nut, D, through which an eX- ternally-screw-threaded tube, E, passes,which is provided at its upper end with acrank-handle, F. A corkscrew, G, ot' any suitable kind, formed of a spiral blade or a spiral tapered wire, is attached to a rod, H, passing loosely through the tube E, and provided at its upper end with a head, J, resting on the. upper end of the tube E. At its lower end the tubeE is provided with a beveled stud or tooth, K, projectinglaterallyordownward. rllhecorkscrew G has at its upper end a disk, L, provided with a beveled stud or tooth, M, the straight edge of which faces the straight edge of the tooth K.
The operation is as follows: The frame A is placed on the bottle O in such a manner that the neck is clamped between the half-rings B below the head P, and the point of the corkscrew rests on the top of the cork N. It' the handle F is turned in the direction of the arrow d', the tooth K at the lower end of the screw-tube E engages with the tooth M on the disk L, and rotates the corkscrew on its lougitudinal axis. As the tube E moves downward while it is being rotated, the corkscrew G will be screwed into the cork. When the screw G has entered the cork the desired depth, the handle is turned in the inverse direction of the arrow c. The beveled edges of the teeth K Mv will then slide over each other and will not engage, and the corkscrew G will not be rotated. The screw-tube E is raised and draws the rod H and the corkscrew G up with it, and thereby the cork is drawn out of the bottle. As the half-rings B rest against the neck of the bottle below the head, they will not break or crush the head.
The most closely-fitting corks can be withdrawn easily by means ot' the above-describe( device. i
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desireto secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A corkscrew made substantially as herein shown and described, and consisting of a corkscrew attached to a rod passing through a screw-tube, and provided with a tooth adapted to engage with a-tooth on the screw-tube, as set forth.
2. In a corkscrew, the combination, with a frame fitting on the top of the bottle, of a screw-tube provided with a handle and passing through a nut in the top of the frame, a corkscrew attached to a rod passing through the screw-tube, a beveled tooth on the lower end ofthe screw-tube, and a beveled tooth on the upper end of the corkscrew, substantially as herein shown and described, and for the purpose set forth.
