TOY WORK-BENCH;

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 292,350, dated January 22,1884.

To all whom it may concern:

Beit known that I, ADOLF PFAENDLEIQR citizen of the United States, residing at Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of- New York, have invented new and useful Improve ments in Toy Work-Benches, of which the following is a specification.

The principal object of this invention is to produce a boys workbench which can be brought into a small compass when not in'use, for convenience of transportation or storage; and it consists in the combination, with a suitable top, of hinged end legs adapted to fold under the top, and of braces for holding the legs in position for use, the details of construction being hereinafter fully set forth and illustrated in the accompanying drawings in. Which Figure 1 is a vertical longitudinal section, showing the legs unfolded. Fig. 2 is a vertical cross-section. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section, showing the legs folded.

The letter A designates the top of the bench,

having hinged thereto at itsopposite ends the legs B B, which are held or sustained in their unfolded positions shown in Figs. 1 and 2, to support the top, by the braces O O C, while they are adapted to be folded under and against the top, as shown in Fig. 3, when not in use, thus bringing the bench into a very small compass. D, for receiving a set of carpenters tools, it being at one edge of the top, and the hinged lid D of this chest is provided on the inner surface with a sill, E, which is perforated with holes f, into which a portion of thetools may be inserted when the lid is opened to a vertical position, as indicated in Figs. 1 and 2. Said lid D is held in its opened position by a foot, g, which is'pivoted to the lid on its inner surface, so that it may rest on the bottom of the chest, as shown, or may be swung up within the edges of the lid, for al-,

lowing the latter to close. With the lid D is combined an opening-spring, h, and a locking-latch, i. On one end of the top A is arranged a stop or abutment, J, for a piece of wood which it is desired to plane, when such piece is laid on the top. A hook, s, attached to the legs and catching into an eye, t, of the top, serves to hold the legs in their folded position.

What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

"l. A workbench consisting of a top, -A, having along its rear edge a sunken toolchest, D, provided with a movable lid, D, the hinged end legs, B, and a brace for holding the legs in position for use, substantially as described.
