JASPER JUDSON HEDGES, OF ATHOL, MASSACHUSETTS.
BEVEL FOR DRAFTSMEN OR ARTIFICERS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 318,984, dated June 2, 1885.
Application filed March 16, 1885.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, J ASPER J UDSON Henens, of Athol, in the county of Worcester, of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Bevels for Draftsmen or Artificers; and I do here by declare the same to be described in the followingspecification and represented in the accompanying drawings, of which- Figure 1 is an edge view, Figs. 2 and 3, cpposite side elevations, of a bevel containing my invention, the nature of which is defined in the claim hereinafter presented. Fig. 4 is a transverse section taken through its sector and its clamping devices. Fig. 5 is a rear view, and Fig. 6 an edge view, of the mechanism for clamping the grooved ruler to the sector.
In such drawings, A is a straight ruler, having in one face and close to one edge of it a groove, a, parallel to such edge. The said ruler extends through a long slot, 1), made lengthwise in the head B, having a straight edge, 12. From the said head there is extended a flat arch, 0, having formed on one face of it the divisions of a quadrant, the central one, or that of fortyfive degrees, being at the crown or middle of the arch. Pivoted to the head at the center of the arch is a sector, D, provided with a projection or index, 0, to extend over the scale or divisions of the arch. YVhen the end of the index is against one extremity of the arc of divisions, the sector brings up against a stud, cl, projecting from the arch, in which case the ruler and the straight edge of the head are at right angles to each other. One edge of the ruler rests against the inner radial edge of the seotor, and is held thereto by a clamp, d, that extends into the groove of the ruler, and encompassing an eccentric, 0, provided with a handle, f, and pivoted to the sector. On turning the eccentric one way by means of its handle, the
(N0 model.)
clamp will draw the ruler closely up to the sector. Furthcrmorethere is projected from the sector close to the intrados of the arch, a screw, g, on which a nut, h, screws, and overlaps the arch, so that when the nut is sufficiently screwed down the sector will be clamped to the arch..
lVith the instrument or bevel thus made the ruler can be readily adjusted into any desirable angle to the straight edge of the head within the limits of ninety degrees, the sector being moved to carry its index from the zero of the scale to the division indicative of the measure of such angle. Having thus moved the sector, it may be clamped in position, and the bevel be used against the edge of a drawing-board,as an ordinary bevel generally is employed by a draftsman.
WVith this instrument, after the ruler may have been adjusted to an angle with thestraight edge of the head, such head can be used either side upward against a drawing-board, so as to enable a person to draw one line at an angle to another which is parallel to the edge of the board, and next to turn over the head and draw another line at the same angle to the second one and at an angle to the first line.
I claim- The bevel, substantially as described, consisting of the slotted head and its arch, the ruler grooved and extended through the head, as described, and the sector pivoted to the head and arranged against the ruler, and provided with mechanisms for clamping such sector to the arch, and also to the ruler, as eX- plained, the arch having upon it ascale of degrees and the sector having an index to extend therefrom to the scale, and all being arranged essentially as set forth.
JASPER JUDSON HEDGES.
