Be it known that I, GEORGE JAMIESON, a citizen of the United States, residing at (lhicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illi nois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Safety-Guards and YVork- Holders for Edge-Molding Machines, (wood-work ing,) of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to an attachment that may readily be applied to any wood-working machine of the class above named. which will serve] the double purpose of protecting the handset the workman from contact with the revolving cutters and of holding the work firmly down upon the table, thus enabling the Workman to operate more freely and push the work through the machine rapidly, accurately, and with perfect safety.
In the accompanylng drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of an edge molding and shaping machine with my attachment applied thereto; Fig. 2, a plan view of the preferred form of my invention, upon an enlarged scale, detached from the table, with the cutters shown in dotted lines outside of the ends of a pair of combined safety-guards and spring presserfingers; Fig. 3, a vertical sectional view in the line 00 00 of Fig. 2; and Fig. 4, a perspective view of the adjustable spreader block, detached, upon an enlarged scale.
The shaping machine consists of a table, A, legs B B, spindle-frame 0, vertical spindles D D, of well-known form. The upper ends of the spindles D D are provided with cutter heads, by which the cutters are carried, as herein shown. Gutters E are arrangedupon cutterheads comprising upper and lower collars, E E. The lower collar, E, serves to prevent the pattern F from being drawn into the cut- .ters,.and the upper collar, E, will prevent the combined safety-guards and springpresserfingers from being forced against the cutters.
Each combined safetyguard and spring presser-finger consists of a fiat or equivalent shaped spring strip or bar, which is arranged horizontally over the table and supported at one end only. The opposite unsupported end of this bar is free and unconnected with any other attachment, and is extended forward to and alongside one of the cutter-heads in position to bear directly upon the work which is held up to the cutter. The under side of the bar is preferably somewhat rounded or formed with a swell, so as to better adapt it to serve I as a prcsser device.
The combined safety-guards and presser-fingers G are secured to sleeves G, said sleeves being bolt d to the under side of a butt-plate,

The standard pin H passes freely through a hole in the butt-plate I, and a clamping-bolt, I, secures said plate in any desired position upon the pin. A standard pin, K, provided with a collar, is, and screwthread It", is secured to the table by a nut, 76*, and a spreader-plate, L, adjustably secured by set-screw Z to the pin K, is arranged to press firmly beneath the combined safetyguards and presser-fingers, and serves to hold said arms a suitable distance above the table to be adapted to the thickness of the work, and also serves to hold the combined safetyguards and presser-fingers well braced to exert an elastic pressure upon the work passed beneath them.
Various modifications may be made in my invention as above described without materially departing therefrom, and good results may be obtained from combined safety-guards and presser-fingers secured independently of each other to the table; but in the form herein described,and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, a single adjustment will answer for both of the combined safety-guards and press er-fingers, as the work is shifted from one cutter to the other to suit the grain of the wood, and an equal adjustment of the combined safety-guards and presser-fingers to secure a uniform pressure upon the work is desirable.
\Vith the above-described attachment an operative is enabled with perfect safety to fearlessly feed and push forward his work beneath the combined safety-guards and presserfingers to the cutters with great rapidity, and as the pressure of the combined safety-guards and presser-fingers is always uniform,a smooth and perfect finish can be given to the work by unskilled labor.
I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. A safety attachment and work-holder for molding-machines, consisting of a combined safety-guard and spring presser-finger, G, attached at one end to a support and having its opposite end free and extended forward to and alongside of a cutter-head, the free end portion of said combined safetv-guard and spring presser-tiuger bcin g constructed and arranged, substantially in the manner described, to bear directly upon the work at a point adjacent to the cutter-head, and to constitute of itself a safetyguard and workholding device, substantially as specified.
2. In combination with a molding-machine provided with a pair of cutter-heads arranged above a table,a pair of combined safetyguards and spring presser-fingers, G G, supported at one end over the table and diverging from their supported ends to their free ends, said free ends being extended alongside of one and the other of the cutter-heads, respectively, and being constructed and arranged, substantially as described, eaeh to bear directly upon the work nearest its allotted outter head, in the manner and for the purpose specified.
3-. In combination with a molding-machine provided with a pair of cutter-heads arranged above a table, the vertically and horizontally movable combined safety-guards and spring presserfingers G, each supported at one end substantially as described, and having its oppo site end free and extended alongside one of the cutterhcads. substantiallyin the manner and for the purpose herein specified.
4. The combination, with the table of a shaping-machine, of the divergingarms secured at their contiguous ends to the table and capable of vertical adjustment thereon, and a spreaderplate arranged to be adj ustable vertically beneath the said presscr-arins, substantially as described, for the purpose specified.
5. In combination with the table and cutter-heads, such as set forth, the butt-plate I, adjustably secured upon a standard pin rising from the table, the spring'arms G, secured in sleeves which are attached to the buttplate, and a spreader-plate, L, adjustably secured upon a standard pin K, which is susceptible ofapplication to both spring-arms, in the manuer and for the purpose herein described.
