TRIP-SAW.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 328,486, dated October 20, 1885.
Application filed August 11, 1885. Serial No. 174,158. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, EDWIN P. HAYES, a citizen of the United States, residing at Deer Lake, in the county of Lake and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Trip-Saws; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanyingdrawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
Figure 1 is a front view of saw-frame, showing my invention. Fig. 2 is a side view of same.
Similar letters refer to similar parts.
My invention-has for its object a simple and inexpensive way of raising cut-off saws above the sawtable by means of a lever, fric tion-wheel, and cam, as hereinafter described. The saws, when my device is not applied, run below the table, leaving the same free for other uses and the saws out of the way. The cutting capacity of the saws is also greater than where hung in the ordinary manner, and they are less liable to be injured.
I describe my invention as follows: To the upright posts H H are fastened the standards F F, by means ofthe pillow-blocks G G, said standards being bound together at the top by the girder E and at the bottom by the girder L, said girder E having suitably journaled thereon the shaft 13, provided with the pulley O and carrying the circular saws A A. Midway of said standards are the blocksi i, serving as journals for the shaft K bearing the pulleys J, and at the lower ends of said standards, journaled in the blocks ff, is the shaft M, bearing the pulley N. The foregoing constitutes the sawfraine, power being applied thereto through the belt D, I being the tightencr and a the support thereof.
The foregoing mechanism as shown and de scribed is not claimed as original, and it is only in combination of the same with that hereinafter described that my invention consists.
Below the saw-frame just described, held in the journal-blockscc, is the shaftP,bearingthe cam-wheel 0, its face meeting that of the pulley N, and on the end of said shaft is the wheel Q. Still farther below,on said posts H H, are the journal-blocks S S, carrying the dicular motion in the blocks or lowered by the lever U. The other end of the shaft V carries the wheel W, on which is the belt 6 for the application of power.
It will be seen that when the friction-wheel is raised by the lever U into contact with the wheel Q, turning the shaft P, bearing the cam O, the action of said cam raises the saw frame, which drops again of its own weight as the cam goes by, thus alternately raising and lowering the saws. The said lever U is extended upward through the floor of the mill, so that it can conveniently be operated by the hand or foot of the sawyer in any convenient fash- 1011.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-
1. The combination of the saw-frame, held and having a perpendicular motion in the blocks G and G, with the shaft P, journaled in the blocks 0 c, and carrying the cam O and the wheel Q, and operated by contact with the friction-wheel R on the shaft V, adapted to be raised or lowered by means of the lever U, attached to the journal-block S, having the slot T, as described, and for the purpose specified.
2. In a trip-saw machine, the combination of the wheel Q on the shaft P, suitably journaled, the cam-wheel O, the friction-wheel It on the shaft V, j ournaled in the blocks S and S, having the slot T, with the lever U, as shown and described.
3. The combination of the saw-frame hearing the saws a a, held and capable of perpen- G G, and provided at the bottom with the shaft M, journaled in the blocks f f and carrying the pulley N, the shaft P, suitably journaled, carrying the wheel Q, and the cam 0, bearing on said pulley N, with the frictio11-wheel It on the shaft V, the journals S and S, having the slot T and the lever U, all substantially as shown, and for the purpose specified.
In testimony whereof I affiX my signature in presence of two witnesses.
EDWIN P. HAYES.
