N. PETERS, PhnILhhcgrapher. Wnhingiun, D. C.
UNITED STATES -PATENT OFFICE.
DANIEL OHARA, OF WALTHAM, ASSIGNOR TO THE AMERICAN VALTHAM WATCH COMPANY, OF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
WATCH-CAS E.
SPECIFICATEON forming part of Letters Patent No. 359,885, dated March 22,1 Si '7.
Application tiled November E4. 1R85.
T @ZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, DANIEL OHARA, of Waltham, in the county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Watch-Cases, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
rlhis invention relates to the Fitch watchcase, so known in the trade, and for a more 1o particular description of which reference is -had to the Letters Patent of the United States issued to Ezra (l. Fitch, dated April 22,1879, No. 214,642.
The invention consists of a watch-case com- I5 posed of a center or shell, a back to the center, and a riser at the front thereof for the attachment of a front cap or bezel, all in one piece, in combination with a vsupplemental ring iitting and seating` upon a shoulder or ilat 2o of and at the front of the case-center and a verse section of a watch-case having the movey ment-ring jointed or hinged within the case v3o center or shell in accordance with this invention and showing a pendant-knob in side View.
Fig. 2 is a face View of the watch-case of Fig.
1 with the crystal and bezel-ring removed.
Fig. 3 is a transverse section in detail and at one side, showing aback cap orplate snapped upon the supplemental ring surrounding the movement-ring. Figs. 4 andare of a watchcase having the case center or shell in the form of an annulus and made separate from the 4o back cap, shown as in one piece with the casecenter in the preceding figures, and both are transverse sections in detail, at one side only,
of the watclrcase and its attachments, and
show in each instance the combination of 4 5 movement-ring and supplemental ring surrounding and hinged to it of this invention applied thereto.
In the drawings, A represents the case center or shell, formed, as shown in Figs. 1, 2, and
5o 3, in one seamless piece of a concave shape,
Serial No. 183,983. (No model.)
open at one side, (the front 13,) and closed at its other side, (the back C,) and al1 so as to be suitable to receive a watclrmovement carried by a ring, D, which is hinged or jointed at one side, as at E, and is vsurrounded by a supplemental ring, F, preferably shouldered, as at a, interiorly for a rest of a corresponding exterior shoulder, b, of the movement-ring D, and also shaped exteriorly with a shoulder, f, to rest upon a corresponding shoulder, g, 6o around the inner periphery of the case-center. The construction of case center or shell A, above described, and illustrated in Figs. l, 2, and 3, constitutes no part of this invention, and therefore needs no further description herein, it being deemed sufficient to observe that it is in substance the same as described and shown in the Letters Patent before cited, and to which reference is hereby had i'or a more particular description thereof. 7o
In Figs. 4 and 5 the case center or shell is in the form of an annulus, open at both front and back, and at the front, (Fig. 4,) closed by acrystal, G, securedin abezelring, H, snapped over the outside of the riser J, and (Fig. 5) 75 also with a front cap, K, snapped over the outside of a riser, L, and at the back, Figs. 4 and 5, with inner and outer back caps or plates, M N, each snapped over separate risers O I? of the case-center, all as well known, and 8o constituting no part of this invention.
The jointing or hinging of the movementring to the supplemental ring may be in any of the well-known or other suitable ways, and consists in substance of a part, h, on the movement-ring and a part, k, on the supple mental ring, the one part fitting into an opening of the other part, and the two thenjointed together with a pintle, d, on which the movement-ring is to turn orswi ng, said pintle being 9o stationary and fixed in the part of the hinge on the supplemental ring. The jointing or hinging particularly described forms no part of this invention, and the invention is not to be limited in any particular to any construction of the hinge or joint E.
The combination of a supplemental ring, F, with the movement-ring D, as described, places thejoint or hinge E inside of the riser at the front of the case, and to which the front bezelloo ring or cap-plate is attached, and thus does away with the placing` of thejoint in said riseran important advantage, and especially when such riser is screw-threaded for screwing the front bezel-ring or a cap-plate thereon, as, for
instance, as shownin Figs. l, 2, and 3.
The supplemental ring F, at its inner edge m, has a riser, a, of the ordinary orother suitable construction, for the attachment of a cap 0r plate, Q, which may be made of albata or other suitable material, and shaped so that attached it will (Fig. 8) bear against the inner surface ofthe back cap or plate, C, ofthe watchcase and act to brace and stiften the same.
The attachment ol" the albata or other metal cap or plate Q to the supplemental ring` inay be made by adapting` the parts to be screwed one upon the other or otherwise, in any suitable or well-known manner.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. A watchcase constructed with integral back, center, and riser at Vi'ront of center, with flats inside and outside of riser, in combination with a front bezel or cap to ht said riser and said outside dat, a supplemental ring to iit within andvto seat on said inside fiat ot' caseccnter, and a inovenientrring,` hinged to and fitting within said supplemental ring, subs stantially as described.
2. A watch-case constructed with integral back, center, and riser at i'ront of center, with Hats inside and outside of riser, in combination with a front bezel or cap to lit said riser and said outside lat, a supplen'iental ring to fit within and to rest on said inside flat of casecenter, a movement-ring` hinged to and iittin` with said supplemental ring, and a back cap or plate secured to the supplemental ring, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in the presence oi' two subscribing,` witnesses.
DANIEL Oli-IAEA.
