Description
NITED STATES ares rrrcn,
ALBERT M. GARRETT AND FRED FRANK, OF DADEVILLE, ALABAMA,
' ASSIGNOBS TO SAID ALBERT F. M. GARRETT.
WRENCH.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. scene-9, dated May 15, 1888.
Application filed June 22, 1887. Serial No. 242,124. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, ALBERT F. M. GAR- RETT and FRED FRANK, citizens of the United States, residing at Dadeville, in the county of Tallapoosa and State of Alabama, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combination-lVrenches and Ratchet-Drills; and we do hereby declare that the follOWing is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure 1 of the drawings is a perspective view of our invention; Fig. 2, a longitudinal section thereof.
The object of the present invention is to provide a wrench with the usual sliding jaws at one end, and at the opposite end a rotary variable jaw operated by a ratchet device; also, in providing means for attaching thereto a drill or other tool; and the invention consists in the details of construction substantially as shown in the drawings, and hereinafter de scribed and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, A represents the handle of the wrench provided at one end with a stationary jaw, B, terminating in a hammer, O. Thejaw A has two angular faces, a b, and a set-screw, 0, extending down through the jaw at the apex of the angle, whereby the nut or other object is more firmly held between the jaws of the wrench by bringing the point of the screw firmly down upon the nut or other object.
The handle A has an elongated slot, (1, in which is located the guide e of the slidingjaw D, said jaw having a pivoted dog, E, to bear upon the nut or other object and adapt itself to the shape or angle of the nut by its pivoted connection with the sliding jaw. The inner face of the jaw D is formed with serrations f to correspond with serrations or teeth 9 on the handle A, so that the sliding jaw will be held stationary at any point along the slotted end of the handle by means of the screw it and nut i,- said screw being connected to the jaw D and extending through the slot (Z, and a washer, Z, being interposed between the nut and the handle, as shown in Fig. 2.
The handle A has connected to it a detach able section, F, by screws or other suitable means, and within the handle and section is located aratchet, G, provided with a shank, in, extending out from each side thereof. These shanks have a square opening, n, to receive the shank of a drill or other tool, and one or both of the shanks m may have suitably connected to it variable jaws H. Any form of variable jaw may be attached upon one or both ends of the shanks m, and springpawls I J are secured at one end to the handle A and handle-section F and their free ends engaging with the ratehetteeth, as shown in Fig. 2. By the employment. ofthe two springpawls a firmer hold is had on the ratchet to prevent it from slipping when unusual leverage power is required, the pawl J having a hooked end, 0, so that it will engage the teeth of the ratchet upon the opposite side to that of the pawl I.
Having now fully described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination, with the handle A and the detachable section F, connected thereto, ofthe ratchet G,lOG.ltd within a recess in said handle and section and provided with a shanl ,m, extending out from each side thereof and provided with a square opening, a, the variable jaws II, secured to said shanl ,the spring-pawl I, secured to said handle, and the spring-pawl J, secured to the section F on the side opposite the pawl I and formed with hooked end 0, all substantially as shown and described, and for the purpose specified.
In testimony that we claim the above we have hereunto subscribed our names in the presence of two witnesses.
ALBERT F. M. GARRETT. FRED FRANK. XVitnesses:
W. Y. SMITH, J os. H. J OHNSON.
