Description

(No Model.) l v N. A. OTTO. IGNITING APPARATUS FOR GAS OROIL MOTOR ENGINES.
No. 424,345. Patented Mar. 25, v1890.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
NICOLAUS AUGUST OTTO, OF COLOGNE, PRUSSIA, ASSIGNOR TO THE GAS- MOTOREN-FABRIKDEUTZ, OF DEUTZ, GERMANY.
IGNITING APPARATUS FOR GAS OR OIL MO-TOR ENGINES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 424,345, dated March 25, 1890.
Application tiled December 19, 1889. Serial No. 334,292. (No model.) Patented in Italy December 1'7, 1889, LII, 180,. and in England November 22, 1889,No.18,746.
To all whom, t may concern:
Be it known that I, NicoLAUs AUGUST OTTO, a citizen of Prussia, residing at Cologne, in the Empire of Germany, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Igniting Apparatus for Gas and Oil Motor Engines, (for which I have obtained a patent in Italy, dated December 17, 1889, Vol. LII, No. 180, and in Great Britain by an application for patent, which patent, when granted, will bear date November 22, 1889, No. 18746,) of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to the construction of igniting apparatus for gas and oil motor engines, consisting of metal tube heated by an external flame and surrounded by a casing such as was described in the specification to Patent No. 386,929, of July 3l, 1888.
According to the present improvement, instead of effecting the heating of the metal tube by a gas-flame, it is heated by a flame of petroleum-vapor. For this purpose the apparatus is constructed as shown on the accompanying drawings, in which- Y Figure 1 shows a longitudinal section of the apparatus; and Fig. 2, a cross-section on line X X, Fig. l.
The heated igniting-tube h, which ignites the cylinder charge when its interior is put in communication therewith in the known manner, is fixed in the passage of casing b, leading to the. engine-cylinder C. At a point by preference as near the cylinder as possible a passage b is formed extending partially round it, and between the two open ends of the passage an opening is formed on the under side of the casing surrounded by a branch tube f. To the one end of the passage b is attached a pipe a, communicating with a supply of liquid petroleum, and to the other end is attached a pipe d, terminating in a nozzle facing the branch tube f, in w-hich is fixed a transverse metal rod g.
Assuming the casing b to be in a heated condition, the liquid petroleum entering the passage b of the casing from pipe a will become volatilized by the heat, and the vapor issuing with force from the nozzle of d Will carry the requisite air-supply along with it through the branch tube f, and in entering into combustion the resulting llame produced in the space cwill impinge upon the ignitingtube h and the interior of the casing b, thereby highly heating these parts and the passage b', in which the liquid petroleum is vaporized. The intimate mixture of the jet of petroleumvapor with the air carried by it is insured by causing the jet of vapor to impinge upon the rod g, whereby it is efectually opened out.
For heating the igniting-tube and casing in the rst instance on starting the engine an oil spirit-lamp is temporarily placed under the branch tube f.
By arranging the passage b and jet d as close as possible to the cylinder the heat is Vconcentrated at that point and acts in the most advantageous manner in tiring the charges.
Having thus described the nature of my invention and the best means I know for carrying the same into practical ett'ect,l claim- In apparatus for igniting the charges of gas or oil motor engines, the combination, With the igniting-tube h, of a tubular casing b, having a channel b', into which liquid petroleum is introduced through a pipe a, a branch tube f,with metal rod g,and a pipe d, with nozzle through which petroleum-vapor formed in the passage b issues into the branch tube f, and in mixing with the necessary air enters, into combustion within the casing, so as to heat this and the tube 7L at a point near the enginecylinder, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification, in the presence of two subscribing Witnesses, this l1th day of December, A. D. 1889.
NIOOLAUS AUGUST OTTO.
