UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ALEXANDER L. BEDFORD, OF S'I. LOUIS, MISSOURI, ASSIGNOR en -ONE-HALF T WILLIAM.J. WAL KER en SAME PLACE.
WRENCH.
SPECIFICATON foicming part of Letters Patent 511,190, dated. December 19, 1893.
Appiication ii1ed Octoler 5,1893. Serial No. 487,235. (Nu model.)
T0 a ZZ whom it may concern:
Be itknown t hat I,ALEXANDER L BEDFORD, a. citizen of the United Stales, residing in the city of St. Louis, State of Missenri, have in vented a certain new and nsefnl Improve ment in W'renehes, 0f whieh tlie foll0wing is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accornpanyi'ng drawings, forming a part of this specification, wherein ro like symbols refer to like parts wherever they 0130111, and in whicl1-- Figure 1 is aperspective view of my imprevedwreneh. Fig. 2 is a detail view in side elevarion, showing tl1e sliding jaw in sec- [5 tien. Fig. 3 is adetail perspeetive view of the sliding jaw, with the tooth ed-plate removed.
1\Iy iuvention relateste anew and nseful imprevement inwrenehes, and consists in the peenliar consitruetion, arrangement, and com- 2o bination of the several pairts, all as will hereinafter be described anti afierw a.rd pointed out in the claims.
Referringto the drawings, A indieaies 'the rigid jaw; B, the toethed 0x ronghened sha.nk; and 0, the handie; all nf said parts being of ordinary o approved constrnction D represents the sliding jaw, eored, as shown, for the passage of the shank therathrengh, which eore is of snch dimensions as to prevent iateral play, but permit the sliding jaw to be tilted er canted in such manner as te disengage the teeth of the toethed plate E, whieh is earried thereby, from 'cl1e teeth 011 the shank. On thefllower rear edge of this sliding jaiv D,I preferably form a lug or prejection D, throngh the medium of which the ogerater aan move time sliding jaw b ackward, at the: Same time tilting the sameto disengage the teeth on the toethed plate Efrori1 the teeth on the shank, and permit he face of the In};
'01 projeetion al te ride over the teeth on-the shank without mntilating the same.
The toothed plate E, heretofe e referred to, is pmferably in the fo1 m of a the teil of Whigl1 is introdnced in the cre s0 as to ferm roneof the wlls thexeof, its teeth being ex terior. I preferably insert apin ethrengh the side yvalls. of the sliding jaw and the of tixe toothed plate E, through the medium of whieh pin thepiate is retained in position,
-end, by the removul of whieh, the plate may be removed and another inserted, shonld its teeth become wrn s0 as to refnse to bite the sha.nk and held the sliding jaw te. its work The cross of this T-shaped plate preferably finds a seat in recesses d in the inner side walls of the sliding jaw, wh ieh constrnction tends to add rigidity te tl1e parts. Riveted, or etherwse secnred, to the wall of the s liding3aw, opposite tl1is teothd plate, is a spnmg F, preferably of a ferm commonly known as a. strap 01 leaf spring, wl1ich spring exertsa pressnre uponthe shank B, so as te force the teel1 of the plate E into engagement with. the teeth en tlxe shank, there being'snficient toom in 6 the e0re to permit this spring to play pmpe rl y.
Iiorce the sliding ja w toward the 11g1d jaw, it is only neeessary to slide the same on the shank, when the teeth on the shank and the tnothed pleite will vide past eaeh ether, oliferifig no obstruetion or resistance. I ew ever, whenthe jaws are in operative POSIlOH a.nd pressnre is placed thereupon,-the act on of the sliding jaw will be to tilt in the direet1on of the toothed plate, whieh will tend t0 bind the sliding jaw en the shank more tightly.
When it is desired to inerease the span of the jaws, il: is only necessary topnll upon the projection 01 t1igger D, whieh will tilt the sliding jaw D inwardly against the aet1on of Sq tl1e spring F and disengage the teetl1 of the plate E so that the sliding jaw will ride upon the teeth on the shank thrnngh the medium of the smooth surface cl, said surface aeting as & fnlcrum-also, as a weer snrface. 8 5 Having films (leseribed my invention,l declare thal; what I claim is- 1. In & wrench, tl1e combination with the rigid ja.w and too thed 01 roughened shank,ef
a sliding ja.w, cored fer the passage of said 0 shank, a teothed pla.te removably secnredin and fermingone of the wa lls fsai d eore, said 'toethed platze being in the form of a T, the .erossbar of which is sea.ted in recesses in the sidewalls of the jaw, and a, spring, secnred in ihe eore, formin g en opposite yieldin g wall thereof, fox holding the toothed plate in en gagenzuantwith the shank, snbstantially as deseribed.
2. In a wrench, ti1e con1bination with the 10e rigid jaw Aand toothed 01 ronghened shank B, of the sliding jaw D providedwith the
