TO ALL WHOM 1T MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, lGr. L. CHAMBERLXN, of Marietta, lVashington county, State of Ohio, hare invented a new and improved Combination of a Square, Level, Devel, and Plumb; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming part. of this specification, in which Figure 1 is a. side view ot' my invention. i
Figure 2, an edge view of the saine.
Figure 3, a. detached view of certain parts pertaining to the same.
Figure 4, an end view of a slide pertaining to the same.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
This invention relates to a new and useful combination ot' the square, level, bevel, und plumb, :is hereinafter fully shown and described, whereby the severa-l tools above specified are combined in one, and either rendered capable of being used by a very simple adjustment of a part pertaining;V to the device. l
A representsia recta'ngular wooden block, the edges of which, at three sides, are lined with metal strips a., the other side being a metal slide, al, the outer surface of which is graduated to form a rule. In one edge or side of this block A there is fitted a spirit-level B, and in one or both sides of the block there is inserted a semicirculsr-metal plate, C, graduated or divided into 180. In the block A, at a. point which is the centre of a circle'of which the plate or plates C form a part., there is fitted a shaft or arbor, 6, to the ends of which a frame, D, is secured by screws cc. This frame Dis composed of two fiat metal strips d d, connected at their ends by cross-strips e e, and the strips dal. are at opposite sides of the block A, the screws c c passing through their centre. This frame D muy be turned, the shaft or arbor turning with it, so as to be parallel with the upper and lower edges of the block, as shown in black, or at right :ingles therewith. as shown in red, or have a more or less oblique position therewitlnias shown in blue, (see tig. 1,) the frame D being somewhat longer than the block, so that the ends of the former may pass around or over the ends of the latter. This frame D may be retained at any desired pointiby means of a sliding bar E, which is fitted longitudinally in the block A, in line with the shaft or arbor I, and is\moved or adjusted by means of a screw, F, so as to press against b and create sufficient friction to prevent I pand, consequently, frame D, from turning. (See figs 2 and The inner side of one of the strips dd has a, circular projection, f, attached to it, concentric with the hole of the screw c, and said projection has four pins, y, inserted in it, two at opposite sides of its centre, (see iig. 3,) to receive a. spring, h, within block A,'wlen the frame D is turned at right angles with the block A. This spring and the pins form a. catch to prevent the frame D casually turning when adjusted at right angles with the block A, the sliding bar E being used to hold said frame when it is adjusted obliquely with the block. The strips d are perforated with holes in the form of a heart, to serve as indices, and to admit of the graduations of the plate C being seen, (see tig. I.) -When the frame D is adjusted at right angles with the block A, as shown iu red, the device may be used as a square or plumb, the frame D being placed against the article to be tested or made plumb, and the level, B, then noticed.'
In using the device as a bevel, the frame D is adjusted obliquely with A, as shown in blue; and in using the device as ulevcl, the frame D is adjusted parallel with the upper and lower edges of block A, as shown in black, iig. 1. This implement or device may be constructed at a moderate cost, and will prove te -be s valuable implement, as the several tools specied may be combihed in one, at a. cost not materially exceeding that oi" one tool when mede separately.
Having 'thusidescribed my invention, I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The block A, having s graduated semicircular plate C, at one or both sides, und a level, B, inserted in one edge, in combination with the adjustable frame D, applied to block A, substantially as and for the purpose herein set forth.
I also claim the adjustable or sliding bar E, in combination with the shaft or arbor I1, to which the frame D is attached, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
I further claim the pins g, on the projcctionf, of one of the strips d of theframe D, in combination with the spring in block A, substantially as und for the purpose set forth.
