STATES WRENCH.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 613,573, dated November 1, 1898.
Application filed March 24 1 897.
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES JAooBY, Sr., of Oroton-on-Hudson, in the county of Vestchester and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in renches; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same. 7
My invention relates to improvements in wrenches; and theobject of the same is to so construct a wrench that the article to which it is applied will not be disfigured by the jaws thereof and at the same time to prevent wear upon the jaws. I
The invention also consists of certain other novel details of construction, hereinafter more particularly set forth and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, Figure 1 is a perspective view of my invention. Fig. 2 illustrates the wrench applied to a nut. Fig. 3 is a view of the parts detached. Fig. 4: is a perspective view of my invention applied to an alligator-wrench.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, 1 indicates the lower or stationary jaw, and 2 the upper or movable jaw. The jaws are formed with the centrally-abutting portions 3and are connected by the links 4, which rest in the recesses 6 in the sides of the jaws. These links are rigid with the lower jaw, but pivoted to the upper jaw, so that the movement of the upper jaw upon the links is afforded, the link-receiving recesses of the upper jaw being enlarged to permit such movement, as will appear from the annexed drawings. The abutting portions are cut away at an inclination upon the outer or forward sides of the same, so that a movement of the movable jaw upon the stationary jaw is permitted. Both jaws are cut away at their inner ends to afford space between them for the operating-handle. The stationary jaw is provided on its rear end with a perforated lug 7, by means of which thehandle 8 is pivoted to said jaw, the lug 7 extending within the recess formed in the lug 9,which depends from the under side of, the handle. The handle is provided with an inclined projection 10, that extends from its upper edge and engages the Serial No. 628,977. (No model.)
correspondingly-shaped cut-out portion 11 on the rear end of the movable jaw. Y A spring 13 is secured at one end to the under side of the handle and at its opposite end bears against the rounded edge 14 of the stationary jaw. This spring servesto hold the jaws normally closed and the movement of the movable jaw against the tension of said spring.
When the wrench is to be used upon the nut or other obj ect,the same is inserted within the nut-receiving opening formed between the jaws and the operatinghandle is depressed. This depression of the operatinghandle causes its forward end, which works in the cut-away portion of the movable jaw, to move the outer end of said jaw toward the stationary jaw, and thus clamp the nutfirmly and securely. This movement is effected by the engagement of the projection upon the forward end of the handle with the wall of the cut-out portion of the movable jaw, which moves said jaw through the medium of the links connecting it to the stationary jaw. The movable jaw is provided with a lip or projection 90, with whicha corresponding projection z on the handle engages to throw the jaws open when the handle is released by the operator and is thrown back by means of the spring 13. The movable jaw will grip the nut with a force proportionate to the force applied to the operating-handle. It will be seen that there is no movement between the nut and wrench, and therefore neither the nut or the jaws of the wrench will be marred or worn. WVhen it is desired torelease the wrench from the nut, the handle is released and its movement reversed, which permits the movable jaw to return to its normal position, the spring efiecting such movement.
My invention can be applied to the form of wrench known as the alligator-wrench, the construction being the same, with the exception of the spring, which is omitted. The wedge-shaped opening between the jaws receives the object to be operated upon, which, owing to the shape of the opening, forces the jaws apart, thus dispensing with the spring. In this construction I make one of the jaws smooth, while I serrate the other jaw, although teeth may be formed upon both of the jaws, the teeth upon the upper jaw inclining inwardly and those in the lower jaw outwardly,
as may be desired. When this wrench is applied to a nut or other object, the teeth of the wrench are forced into the metal by the movement of the handle, as will be understood.
From the above description it will be seen that I have produced a wrench in which the disfiguring of the part of the object to which it may be applied and the wearing of the jaws of the wrench are obviated.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. A wrench comprising a stationary jaw, a movable jaw, said jaws being recessed 011 their side faces, links positioned in said recesses and pivoted at one end to the movable jaw and at their opposite ends rigidly secured to the stationary jaw, and an operating-handle pivoted to the stationary jaw and adapted to operate the movable jaw, substantially as described.
2. A wrench comprising jaws having centrally-abutting portions, the inner ends of the jaws recessed, links pivoted to the movable j aw and rigidly secured to the stationary jaw, and an operating-handle pivoted to the stationary jaw and fitting within the recessed ends of the jaws, said handle having a pro j ection adapted to extend into a recess formed upon the movable jaw whereby the movement of the handle elfects the movement of the movable jaw upon the stationary jaw, substantially as described.
3. A wrench comprising a movable and a stationary jaw, said jaws being recessed upon their faces, links adapted to fit in said recesses, secured at one end to the stationary jaw and pivoted at their opposite ends to the movable jaw, the stationary jaw provided with a lug, an operating-handle pivoted to the lug of the stationary jaw, the movable jaw provided with a lip or projection which is engaged by a projection upon the end of the handle, and means for returning the movable jaw to its normal position after it is operated, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscrib= ing witnesses.
