OF ISLETA, OHIO.
' WRENCH.
v SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 635,207, dated October 17, 1899.
Application filed July 29, 1899.
To all whom it pea/y concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES M. TILTON, residing at Isleta, in the county of Ooshocton and State of Ohio, have made certain new and useful Improvements in Wrenches, of which the following is a specification.
My invention is an improvement in wrenches seeking to provide a simple novel construction of ratchet-wrench which can be cheaply made, easily operated to move the nut or bolt in either direction without removing the wrench from such nut or bolt, and which is adapted to fit nuts or bolts of different sizes without changing the head of the wrench.
The invention consists in certain novel constructions and combinations of parts, as will be hereinafter described, and pointed out in the claims. i
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of my wrench as in use. Fig. 2 is a side view of the wrench. Fig. 3 is a detail View of the head; and Fig. 4 is a detail View of the wrench handle, pawl, and spring detached and with the sections of the handle separated.
The wrench has its head A provided in one end with a large socket A and in its other end with a smaller socket A so it can be fitted on two sizes of nuts or bolts, as may be desired. In its outer side between its ends the head is provided with a circumferential groove B, and on opposite sides of said groove has teeth O facing in opposite directions, so the pawl presently described may be adjusted to turn the head in either direction when the handle is properly operated.
The handleD is preferably composed of the two sections D, which are bolted together and have at one end the hooks D which fit in the groove B of the head and form a bearing in which the said head turns. When the head is thus fitted to the handle, its teeth 0 lie on opposite sides of same, as shown, and are engaged by one or the other end of the pawl E. This pawl E is composed of the plates E, which lie on opposite sides of the handle, and the connecting-shaft E which extends be tween the plates E and is journaled in the handle D and preferably between the two sections B thereof. The plates of the pawl are adapted at their opposite ends for engagement with the teeth of the head of the wrench and operate to turn said head in one direction or Serial No. 725,521. (No model.)
the other, according to the set of the pawl, as will now be described. The pawl is actuated by the spring F, which is secured at one end to the handle and is connected at its other end with the pawl, preferably by looping it over the bail G, which is secured to the pawl E and extends on opposite sides of the pivot of said pawl and is provided on opposite sides of said pivot with the depressions or seats G in which the spring is held to insure the turning of the wrench-head in one direction or the other when the handle is properly-operated.
It will be noticed that it is not necessary to remove the wrench from the cap in order to take a new hold, but the-handle, by means of the pawl and ratchets, turns backward and forward on the head of the wrench, which has two sets of teeth lying on opposite sides of the handle, which are engaged by the pawlplates, lying also on opposite sides of the handle.
The wrench can be reversed by simply slipping the spring from end to end of vthe bail G. The wrench can be also operated with facility in a corner or elsewhere where there is but little space for operation.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The improved wrench herein described consisting of the head provided in its outer side with the circumferential groove and on opposite sides of same with the teeth, the handle made in sections secured together and provided at their ends with hooks fitting in the groove of the wrench-head and forming a bearing therefor, the pawl composed of the pawl-plates adapted at their opposite ends to engage the teeth of the wrench-head and 1ying on opposite sides of the handle, and the shaft connecting said pawl plates and pivoted in the handle, the bail secured to the pawl, extending on opposite sides of the pivot thereof and provided on opposite sides of said pivot with the seats for the spring, and the actuating-spring movable into engagement with either of said seats substantially as set forth.
2. In a wrench substantially as described the combination of the wrench-head having teeth facing in opposite directions, the double-ended pawl pivoted between its ends loo tions fitting in the groove of the head, and
the pawl composed of the opposite plates arranged to engage the head, and the pivotshaft connecting said plates and journaled in a bearing between the sections of the handle, substantially as set forth.
4. A wrench comprising a head having teeth facing in opposite directions, a handle, and a pawl adjustable to engage either of the opposite faces of said teeth to drive the head in either direction substantially as set forth.
5. The improved wrench comprising the handle, the head journaled to said handle and provided on opposite sides of same with teeth, and the spring-actuated pawl having a shaft journaled in the handle and plates connected by and fixed to said shaft and arranged on opposite sides of the handle and adapted to engage the head of the wrench substantially as set forth.
