SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 728,520, dated May 19, 1903. Application filed. August I6, 1902. Serial No. 119,849. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, HENRY TSCHERNING, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Freeport, in the county of Stephenson and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Oork-Pullers, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in cork-pullers and its object is to provide a device of this class which shall be simple, cheap, and effective.
To these and certain minor ends my invention consists in certain novel features of construction clearly shown in the drawings and described in this specification.
In the aforesaid drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved cork-puller, one of the side plates of the frame being removed. Fig. 2 is a similar view with the parts in a different position, the nut and corkscrew-carrier, however, being shown in section. Fig. 3 is a section in the line 3 3 of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a section in the line 4 4 of Fig. 1, and Fig. 5 is a front view of the corkpuller. I V
Referring to the drawings, A is the frame of my improved cork-puller, said frame being of the usual type, composed of two side plates A A secured together by suitable boltsor screws. Certain portions of said plates form together a longitudinal guideway a, which opens through the front of the case in two openings (1. and a separated by a stop a formed by projecting portions upon the side plates. In the guideway are the usual nut and corkscrew-carrier. The nut B is threaded to surround the corkscrew and is further provided with a projecting lug b,- which extends into the opening a. and is adapted by contact with the stop a to limit the upward movement of said nut B. The descending movement of said nut islimited by the'bottom of the guideway a.
A corkscrew-carrier, represented by C, has rotatably secured in it a corkscrew D provided with a cylindrical head at. The means by which the corkscrew is secured in the corkpractice. A handle E, connected by a link 0 to the corkscrew-carrier, provides means for reciprocating the corkscrewcarrier throughout the entire length of the guideway a. A block F 'is pressed against the head of the corkscrew D by a spring f, confined in a hole in the corkscrew-carrier O by a small screwf. This acts as a frictional brake upon the corkscrew and retards its rotation in the corkscrew-carrier. This mechanism is more particularly described .and

filed on even date herewith and alloted Serial No. 119,848. A curved hook G is pivoted to the handle E at its junction with the link 6, and this hook is adapted during certain por tions of the movement of the corkscrewcarrier to engage a notch b in the nut B. A pin 9 extends laterally from the hook G and is adapted to be engaged by ribsa cast in the side plates of the puller. The position of these ribs is such that during the upper half of the motion of the corkscrew-carrier the hook G is held away from and out of contact with the nut B, but during the lower portion of the movement of the corkscrewcarrier it is permitted to fall by its own weight toward the nut B. Beveled'surfaces a at the lower end of the ribs a provide for a gradual movement of the hook to and from the nut.
The operation of the cork-puller will be apparent from the above to any one versed in the art. Starting with the parts in the position shown in Fig. 1, as the corkscrew-carrier goes downward the nut B also passes downward, remaining at the same distance from the corkscrew-carrier as that shown in Fig. 1. It is held at this distance because the frictional brake upon the corkscrew prevents the rotation of the corkscrew and conthe parts reach the position shown in Fig. 2, the hook G, which has been permitted to swing toward the nut, engages the notch Z) and connects the nut independently of the corkscrew-carrier to the handle E. As the handle is lowered from the position shown in Fig. 2 it draws both the nut and carrier up at the same rate of speed, thereby extracting the cork. When the projection Z; upon the nut B reaches the top of the slot a and comes in contact with the stop a the progress of the nut is arrested. At the same moment the pin 9 meets the ribs a and the hook G is thrown out of engagement with the nut B, thereby disconnecting the nut from the handle E. The corkscrew-carrier then rises alone, drawing the corkscrew through the nut and stripping the cork. This completes the cycle of operation.
, The particular advantage of my construction lies in the fact that an independent pull is exerted upon the nut and carrier. Heretofore it has been customary to connect the nut to the carrier during certain portions of the operation. I do not do this, but connect the nut independently of the carrier to the operating-handle, so that each of the two movable parts is independentlyand positively operated by the operating lever or handle.
I realize that considerable Variations can be made in the details of this construction without materially departing from the spirit of the invention, and I do not limit myself to the specific form herein shown.
I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. In a device of the class described, the combination with a frame, a corkscrew-carrier longitudinally reciprocable in said frame, a handle and means of connection between said handle and said corkscrew-carrier whereby said handle can reciprocate said corkscrewcarrier, a not also longitudinally reciprocable in said frame, and threaded to embrace said corkscrew, and means for limiting the reciprocation of said nut, of means for connecting said handle to said nut to draw the same upward during the pulling motion of said corkscrew-carrier, and means for disconnecting said nut from said handle at the termination of the pulling motion of said corkscrewcarrier, substantially as described.
2. In a device of the class described, the combination with a frame, a corkscrew-carrier longitudinally reciprocable in said frame, a handle and means of connection between said handle and said corkscrew-carrier whereby said handle can reciprocate said corkscrewcarrier, a nut also longitudinally reciprocable in said frame, and threaded to embrace said corkscrew, and means for limiting the reciprocation of said nut, of a hook pivotally connected to said handle, a notch in said nut and means for bringing said hook into engagement with said nut to connect it to said handle, substantially as described.
3. In a device of the class described, the
combination with a frame,a corkscrew-carrier longitudinally reciprocable in said frame,a handle and means of connection between said handle and said corkscrew-carrier whereby said handle can reciprocate said corkscrewcarrier, a nut also longitudinally reciprocable in said frame, and threaded to embrace said corkscrew, and means for limiting the reciprocation of said nut, of a gravity-hook pivoted to said handle, a notch in said nut, said gravity-hook being adapted to fall into engagement with said nut of its own weight to connect said nut to said handle, substantially as described.
4. In a device of the class described, the combination with a frame, a corkscrew-carrier longitudinally reciprocable in said frame, a handle and means of connection between said handle and said corkscrew-carrier whereby said handle can reciprocate said corkscrewcarrier, a nut also longitudinally reciprocable in said frame, and threaded to embrace said corkscrew, and means for limiting the reciprocation of said nut, of a hook pivoted to said handle and adapted to engage said nut, and means for disengaging said hook from said nut, substantially as described.
5. In a device of the class described, the combination with a frame, a corkscrew-carrier longitudinally reciprocable in said frame, a handle and means of connection between said handle and said corkscrew-carrier whereby said handle can reciprocate said corkscrewcarrier, a not also longitudinally reciprocable in. said frame, and threaded to embrace said corkscrew, and means for limiting the reciprocation of said nut, of a hook pivoted to said handle and adapted to engage said nut, and suitable means on said case for disengaging said hook from said nut, substantially as described.
6. In a device of the class described, the combination with a frame, a corkscrew-carrier longitudinally reciprocable in said frame, a handle and means of connection between said handle and said corkscrew-carrier whereby said handle can reciprocate said corkscrewcarrier, a nut also longitudinally reciprocable in said frame, and threaded to embrace said corkscrew, and means for limiting the reciprocation of said nut, of a hook pivoted to said handle, and adapted to engage said nut, and a cam in said case adapted to engage said hook and throw the same out of engagement with said nut, substantially as described.
7. In a device of the class described, the combination with aframe, a corkscrew-carrier longitudinally reciprocable in said frame, a handle and means of connection between said handle and said corkscrew-carrier whereby said handle can reciprocate said corkscrewcarrier, a nut also longitudinally reciprocable in said frame, and threaded to embrace said corkscrew,and means for limiting the reciprocation of said nut, of a hook pivoted to said handle and adapted to engage said nut, projecting pins on said hook and a cam on said case, adapted to engage said projecting pins to disengage said hook from said nut, substantially as described.
8. In a device of the class described, the combination with a frame, a corkscrew-carrier longitudinally reciprocable in said frame, a handle and means of connection between said handle and said corkscrewcarrier whereby said handle can reciprocate said corkscrewcarrier, a nut also longitudinally reciprocable in said frame, and threaded to embrace said corkscrew, and means for limiting the reciprocation of said nut, of a hook pivoted to said handle, and adapted to engage said nut and a pair of ribs forming cams cast integrally with said case and adapted to engage said hook to disengage it from said nut, substantially as described.
9. In a device of the class described, the combination with a frame, a corkscrew-carrier longitudinally reciprocable in said frame, a
handle and means of connection between said handle and said corkscrew-carrier whereby said handle can reciprocate said corkscrewcarrier, a nut also longitudinally reciprocable in said frame, and threaded to embrace said corkscrew, and means for limiting the reciprocation of said nut, of a gravity-hook pivoted to said handle and adapted to engage said nut, projecting pins on said-hook, a pair of ribs forming cams cast integrally with said case and adapted to throw said hook away from said nut and disengage it therefrom, substantially as described.
