TO ALL WHOMIT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that we, JoHN A. HAHN and CHA-rinus VOGLER, of Degra, in the county of Logan, and ,State of. Ohio, have invented a new andv improved Shoemakers Bench; and we do hereby declare that the'following Ais a full, clear, and exact description of thesarue, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a partl Figure 1 is a side elevation.
Figure 2 is an end elevation. Figure 3 is a top view. Figure 4 is'a cross-section, showing the spindle 'l Theobject of this invention isto provid-e a neat and convenient benchfor the use of shoemakers, which shall have on one sideof the operator an adjustable clamp of improved construction, and onthe other side-,an adjustable rotating jack, for holding bootsand shoesA during the operation of pegging. l
In the drawings, A represents the seat or platform of the bench, supported upon suitable legs B On one end of the bench is a clamp, C, composed ofone jaw, c, which is movable only vertically, and another, e', which is movable both vertically and laterally. Thejaw c is hinged at Lits lower end to the jaw c, and can be clamped against it'witlr great power by means of a cam-lever, D, operated by an arm, E, and treadle F. By
pressing down on the treadle F, the operator obtains the power of twolevers, F and D, and of the cam on the latter lever, by which to operate-the clamp. A spring, s, is employed to force the two jawsof the clamp asundenv Thejaw e extends al short distance below the otherjaw, and is bolted or otherwise suitably attached to a. lcross-bar, Gr, supported in mortises or slots in two of the legs, and capable Qfbeing adjusted upand down by means ofpins and holese c e. Byithis means the clamp CJ can be adjusted higher or lower, tosuit the convenience of the workman.
I The jaw e may be h'eldiirmly in position, while the other jaw is operating against it,'by means of anarm or projecting. end of a beam, H, behind it. If bolted to that beam, the bolt may work in a slot in the jaw, so that the latter c an move up 'and down`without d iiiculty. p i i On'the' vopposite end of the bench is a plate, I, which is supported by, and rotates horizontally upon, a spindle, J, which stands vertically in an opening thrpugh the bench, being held in position by two metallic plates, K and L, one riveted to the upper and the other to the under side of the bench, and extending slightly l over the opening just referred to. The plate I supports two blocks, one,"M, 'xed immovably to it, and another, N,'working back and forth toand from the block M by meansv of a screw-rod, O. I
The upper surfaces-of the blocks are made concave, and fitted to receive and hold a bootor shoe in the position shown by the red linesl in the drawings: A strap, r,jpasses around the shank of the shoe, when the latter 'is on the blocks, and, extending down to a dtrea'dle, T, enables the operator, by placing his fobt on the' treaclle, to coriiine the boot or shoe as {irmly in position ashe desires, while he is at work upon it. Both the' treadles Tand F may have a set of notches, or a ratchet,` c n, on the side of the slot in the bench-leg, through which they extend, so that they can be fastened Adown while the operatoris at work. The plate I,`with the boot or shoe upon it, can be turned to an'y 'horizontal position to suit the'conveniencc of the'workman, and the 4blocks M N can 4be adjusted to any size of shoe or boot.
'.lhe workman can sit upon the bench while at worlgor upon a stool independent of thebench, or, by raise' ing the bench upon blocks, can, without any diiculty, do all his work while standing, thereby relieving himself of the necessity of maintaining one cramped position while at work, and greatly promoting his convenience, comfort, and health. a v y Having thus described our invention, whatwe claim as new, and desire to secure by -Letters Patent, is-
l. The clamp C', whenconstructed with the vertically-adjustable jaw c,-the vertically and laterally-movable I jaw c', the springs, and the.combinaltion of the camlever D, rod E, and treaclle F, forthe purpose of operating it, the whole being constructed, arranged, and operating inthe manner described;
2. The combination and arrangement, on a shoemakers bench, of the clamp G, constructed and operating as 'above described, and the apparatus 4consistimcg of the plate I, blocks M and N, screw O, strap r, and treadle T, all constructed and operating in the manner and for the pnrposes set forth.
To'theabove speciction of our invention nre have signed our hands, this 10th day of March, 1868. Witnesses: n JOHN A. HAHN.
GEO. S. NIMAN, n ISAAC' SMIgfH.
Witnesses: i CHARLES VOGLER.
