Be it known that I, EVEN E. KnfrrnLseN,
a citizen of the United States, residing at Albany, in the county of Green and State of Wisconsin, have invented a new and useful Wrench, of which the followingis aspeciiication.
This invention relates to wrenches, and is designed to provide certain new and useful improvements in that type of wrenches disclosed by my prior patent, No. 685,050, granted October 22, 1901. It is furthermore designed to limit the inward swing of the members of the wrench so as to prevent injury to I 5 the spring by undue compression thereof without interfering with the effectiveness of the implement.
With these and other objects in view the present invention consists in the combination 2o ,andarrangement of parts, as Willbcmore fully described, shown in the accompanying drawings, and particularly pointedout in the ap pended claims, it being understood that changes in the form, proportion,size and minor details may be made within the scope of the claims without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.

As in my former device the present device comprises a pair of duplicate members 1 and 2, which have their rear shank portions connected bya terminal pivotal hinge 3, whereby the members may be swung toward and away from one another. The free ends of the members terminate in jaws 4, the inner faces of 5 which are inclined, so as to form a substan Serial No. 204,119. (No model.)
tially V-shaped seat for the reception of a nut, pipe. or the like. The jaws diverge rearwardly for a suitable distance and are then bent inwardly, as at 5, where they merge into the shank portions of the members.
A slide 6 is applied transversely across one side of the wrench and has hooked terminals 7 to slidably embrace the straightouter edges of the jaw portions of the wrench members, from which it will be understood that the slide is in the nature of a yoke, and by moving the same away from the hinge or pivot 3 the members maybe separated to vary the distance between the jaws. At the back edge of the slide is an intcri'nediate flange or shoulder 8, which is directed inwardly between the wrench members and constitutes a stop for engagement by the wrench members to limitinward adjustment thereof. 111 front of this flange and lying against the inner face of the slide is a bowed spring 9, the opposite free ends of which frictionally engage the inner edges of the wrench members, and its intermediate portion is held in place'by means of a projection or linger 10, carried by the flange 8, and bent over the intermediate portion of the spring, so as to embrace the same and hold it snugly upon the slide. The-purpose of this spring is to insure an effective frictional engagement between the ends of the yokeshaped slide and the wrench members, so as to prevent accidental slipping of the yoke, while at the same time permitting of manual adjustment thereof. To prevent displacement of the slide at the jaw ends of the wrench members, the inner faces of the latter are provided with notches 11, which produce shoulders with which the free ends of the spring engage at the outer limit of the slide, and thereby prevent the latter from working oil of the forward end of the wrench.
In Figs. 5 and 6 the same reference charactors and description apply as in Figs. 1 to t, inclusive, with the exception that the shank portions of the memhersl and 2 are bowed outwardly, with their free extremities or jaws 4: disposed in parallelism when at their outer limits, the inner or gripping faces of the jaws being smooth, so as to engage nuts. With the exception of this slight change in form,
so as to adapt the wrench for use upon nuts as well as upon pipes, rods, and the like, the form shown in Figs. 5 and 6 is substantially the same as the pipewrench form shown in Figs. 1 to 45, inclusive.
Having thus described the construction and operation of my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A wrench comprising a pair of members having a pivotal connection and provided with converging portions terminating in jaws, a slide embracing the converging portions of the members, and a bowed spring secured intermediately to the slide with its free end portions frictionally engaging the inner faces of the respective wrench members and extending toward the jaws, the inner faces of the wrench members being provided with shoulders near their outer ends and in the paths of the ends of the spring for engagement with the latter to limit the forward adjustment of the slide.
2. A wrench comprising a pair of pivotallyconnected members having converging portions terminating in jaws, a slide embracing the converging portions of the members, a spring secured intermediatel y to the slide with its free ends frictionally engaging the wrench members, and means upon the slide for engagement by the wrench members to limit inundue compression of the spring by the wrench ward adjustment thereof and thereby prevent members.
3. A wrench comprising a pair of pivotallyconnected members having converging portions terminating in jaws, a slide embracing the converging portions of the jaws and provided with an intermediate flange, and a spring carried by the slide and frictionally engaging the wrench members, said flange being disposed between the wrench members to limit inward adjustment thereof and thereby prevent undue compression of the spring by said members. 1

A wrench comprising a pair of pivotallyconnected members having converging portions terminating in jaws, a slide embracing the converging portions of the jaws, and a bowed spring carried by the slide and engaging the members of the wrench, the slide having a flange bent over an intermediate portion of the spring to secure the latter to the slide and projected at opposite sides of the spring to constitute stops to limit inward movement of the wrench members and thereby prevent undue compression of the spring.
6. A wrench comprising a pair of pivotallyconnected members having converging portions terminating in jaws, a yoke-shaped slide embracing the converging portions, and a bowed spring carried by the slide with its free ends frictionally engaging the inner faces of the wrench members, said inner faces being provided with notches at their outer ends for engagement by the ends of the spring to limit outward movement of the slide, and said slide having a flange located between the wrench members to limit inward adjustment thereof, a portion of the flange being bent over .the spring to secure the latter to the slide.
