Description

N.PETER5, PHOTO-LITHOGRAPHER. WASHINGTON D C @atten tette attwt @Hite Letters Patent No. 79,139, elated June 23, 1868.
IMPROVEMENT IN POCKET-KNIVES.
@Le Stlphnle ttfrmh tu in tigris etttts @mit mit netting pint nt tigt samt.
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONGERN: i
Be it known that I, JAMES'E. McBETH, of city of New Orleans, in the Vperish of Orleans, and in the State i of Louisiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pocket-Knives; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, cie-ar,` and exact description thereof, reference beinghad to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of'reference marked thereon. l i
The nature of myinvention consistsy in sharpening the upper part of the blade only, and providing this part with flanges or projections, one on each side, and having the blade under such flanges or projections filed away in a. concave shape, the object hereof being to pare the finger-nailsv without cutting into the quick or the flesh of the finger, and to prevent the nervous creeping sensation consequent upon the sharp edge of e, knife passing over the flesh of the finger in the paring of the nails. i
To enable others'skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe its construction and operation. i
I n the annexed drawings formingvpart of this specification, A represents the handle of :t knife B the blade, which is constructed in the following manner: 'Ihe upper part, a, thereof', only is sharpened, and pro- 'vided with a. small flange or projection,l C, on each slide of the blade, of proper size for insertion under the,
fingernail while it is being pared, one linnge oriprojcction for the right hand, and the other for the left. hand, to prevent'the cutting into the quick, while immediately under such flanges or projections the blade `is filed away in a. concave formation, c, to adapt itself`to the rounded shape of the end of the finger, as shown in Figure 2. v i
The edge of the blade thus {iled away is blunt and rounded, in order to pnss smoothly over the end of the finger while paring the nails. The angcs or projections C C arc 'also rounded on the edge, and formed concave underneath, so that ythey will rnove with ease betweenthe nailv and the flesh of the finger.
The iiange isiinrserted under the nail of the finger atthe side farthest from the person, :ind when it has pared the nail tontheother or. nearest side, the Iinnge, pressing on the csh, will prevent the sharp edge from cutting the nail too-much, and also from coming in contact with the flesh, and will canse it to pass ollF from the finger. "i: Y l v y Having thus-fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, s
The bladeiB, with the uppervpart, a, only sharpened, iinnges C and concave c, arranged and operating substantially as v .nd for the purposes herein set forth. l
In testimony th'at I claim the foregoing, I have hereunto set my hand, this 20th day of April, 1865.
l JAMES E. McBETI-I.
