Be it known that I, AQUILA B. Cook, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Iindber, in the county of Somerset and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wrenches, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in wrenches, and more particularly to that type commonly known as a monkey-wrench.
T he object of this invention is to provide a novel form of wrench which can be easily and quickly adjusted to grip an object and then novel means employed to still further engage the object, whereby the wrench may be manipulated without slipping or becoming detached from the obj ect.
Another object of this invention is to provide a wrench consisting of a movable jaw that can be readily adjusted to any desired position, the jaw being so constructed and arranged that it can be further forced into engagement with the object it is to grip by employing the wrench as a lever, which is the common use when rotating an object in connection with which the. wrench is used.
The construction entering into my improved wnench will be hereinafter more fully described and then specifically pointed out in the claim, and, referring to the drawings accompanying this application, like numerals of reference designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved wrench. Fig. 2 is a front edge view of the same, a portion of the handlethereof being broken away. Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view taken on the line 0c a; of Fig. 1, and Fig. 4 is a similar view taken on the line y y of Fig. l.
To put my invention into practice, I employ a shank 1, carrying a fixed head or aw 2, the under face of which is serrated, as indicated at 3. The opposite end of the shank is pierced, as indicated at 4, whereby it may be pivotally connected by a pin 7 in a ferrule 5, carried by a handle 6, the ferrule 5 embracing the 'upper end of the handle 6 and bifurcated, as indicated at 8, to accommodate the lower end of the shank 1.
In connection with the parts just described I employ a aw 9, having a top serrated edge 1() adapted to oppose the serrated portion 3 of the fixed head or aw 2. The aw 9 is provided with a vertically-disposed opening 11, adapted to'receive the shank 1 of the wrench, and parallel with said opening is formed another opening 12, with which communicate the openings 14 14, formed in the sides of the contracted portion 15 of the movable jaw. Mounted in the openings 14 14 is a serrated collar 16, which serves functionally as a nut. Formed diametrically opposite each other within the collar 16 are teeth 17 17, the object of which will be presently described.
The ferrule 5 of the wrench is provided with outwardly-extending parallel lugs 18 18, between which is pivotally mounted by a pin 20 the lower end of a bar 19. The front and rear edges of the bar 19 are provided with teeth 21 21, and said bar is adapted to eXtend upwardly through the openings 12 of the jaw 9 and through the collar 16.
The manner of manipulating my improved wrench is as follows: In Figs. 1 and 3 of the drawings I have illustrated the movable jaw of my improved wrench in position to be adjusted upon the shank 1 of the wrench. By referring to Fig. 3 of the drawings it will be observed that the teeth 17 17 of the collar or nut 16 lie diametrically opposite the smooth surface of the bar 19, while the teeth 21 21 of the bar lie diametrically opposite the smooth surface of the collar or nut 16. The position of these parts permits of the jaw 9 being moved along the shank 1 to any desired position. In order that the leverage feature of my improved wrench may be easily understood, we will assume that an object, such as a nut or a piece of pipe, is being gripped by the wrench. The jaw 2 having been placed in engagement with the object, the jaw 9 is moved into as close proximity to the object as possible and locked in this position by rotating the collar or nut 16, the teeth 17 of the collar or nut engaging the teeth 21 of the bar 19. When the handle 6 of the wrench is moved in a direction tending to rotate the object, the pivotal connection of the handle with the shank 1 permits of the handle being moved at an angle to said shank, and as the bar 19 is pivotally connected in the lugs 18 18 of the handle this bar will be forced inwardly toward thev object, carrying with it the jaw 9 of the wrench, consequently forcing said jaw into closer engagement with the object upon which the wrench is gripped. This leverage feature of my improved wrench greatly facilitates the manipulation of the IIO same and prevents the Wrench when once secured upon an object from slipping and in any manner injuring the person manipulating the Wrench.
F rom the foregoing description it Will be observed that I have provided a Wrench which is extremely simple in construction, strong and durable7 comparatively inexpensive to manufacture, and highly efficient for the purposes for which it is used.
It Will be noted that various changes may be made in the details of construction without departing from the general spirit and scope of the invention.

In a Wrench of the character described, the combination with a shank having a iiXed jaw, and a handle pivotally connected to said shank, of a sliding jaw formed with two vertically-disposed openings extending through the avv, said sliding jaw being mounted on said shank, a threaded bar pivotally oonnected to said handle and passing through one of. the openings in said sliding jaw, said sliding jaw being formed with a contracted portion and With openings in the sides of said contracted portion, a nut located in said openings in said sliding jaw and receiving said threaded bar7 the sides of the nut protruding beyond both sides of said contracted portion of the sliding jaw.
