BASE ATTACHMENT FOR CENTER-GAGES- Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 27, 1906.
1'0 all whom, it vita-y concern:
Be it known that we, JOHN L. BALTZER and LAROY S. STARRETT, of Athol, in the county of Worcester and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Base Attachments for Centor-Gages, of which the following is a specification.
This invention is designed to provide a convenient base or seat for a center-gage or the blade of a steel square, the device serving to instantly locate the gage or blade edgewise and lengthwise in the radial axial plane of any shaft or like body to which the seat may be applied. The gage will also be perpendicular and its edges parallel to any lane surface to which said base or seat is app ied.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation showin a center-gage in position in this sup ortingase. Fig. 2 is a vertical section on inc 2 2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is an enlarged horizontal section of the base and its spring, taken about on line 3 3 of Fi 4. Fig. 4 is an end view of the device, the blade or gage removed.
As represented, our improved base or seat is a mi led cylindrical metal block 6, from which a rectangular longitudinal segment has been removed, leaving in its bottom a recess 7 extending from end to end and bounded by diverging radial planes. The edges where these planes meet the periphery are slightly flattened horizontally, so that the base-block will rest smoothly on a lane surface. The she is of the base-bleach and the inclination of the recess-walls may be modified. Directly above the center of recess 7 the base or seat 6 has a longitudinal groove or slot 8 with vertical edge walls and a horizontal bottom parallel to the lane of the flattened lower edges of the bloc so that the gage or blade 5 when secured therein will stand vertically on a horizontal surface with its edges parallel to the axis of the base. The slot 8 is wider than the thickness of the gage,
so as to receive a longitudinal spring 9, serving to hold the gage frictionally against one Wall of the slot.
The spring shown is of peculiar construction. It extends on a uniform curve from end to end of the base, a portion 10 of each end being bent outwardly to overlap the end of the base-block, which is slightly recessed to receive it. (See Fig. 3.) This permits repeated insertion and removal of the gage or blade without displacing the spring. The body of the springriscs above the base-block, preferably on a curve, as in Fig. 1, so that the gage may be inserted into the slot by first pressing it against the convex side of this protruding portion and introducing it edgewisc. Obviously it may be inserted endwise.
Vile claim as our invention 1. A base or seat fora center-ga e, the same comprising a rigid elongated bo y having in its bottom a continuous lon itudinal recess with diverging walls and flattened lower edges, and formed in its top with a vertical lon itudinal groove or slot immediately above tl ie axis of said body, in combination with a spring mounted in such groove or slot, rising above the walls thereof on a uniform curve, and adapted to hold the gage or blade frietionally against the vertical wall of said groove, substantially as set forth.
2. The elongated base-block 6 having a rectangular recess 7 with radial walls flattened terminally and above it a vertical longitudinal slot 8, with s ring 9 therein, anchored terminally to t e base block and adapted to hold the tool frictionally against the slot-wall, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof we have afiixed our signatures in presence of two witnesses.
