@sind @tim VWILLIAM TA. HARVEY, JR., OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR TO HDW- SELF AND PETER GRIMES, OF SAME PLACE. l
Lette/rs Patent No. 82,943, elated Octoberl 13, 1868.
INIPROVEMENT IN. SAW-HANDLES.
The Schedule referred to in theselherttem Patent and making part of the naine.
lI do hereby declareA that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making a part of this specication, in whichV the figure shows an elevation, partly sectional, of my improved saw-handle.
The nature of my invention consists ina new device to fasten saw-blades to the handle in a simple, eco- "nomical, and eli'ectual manner, and so contrived that the same one handle may be used for several different saw-blades. V
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use `my invention, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation.
A A is a hand-saw handle, made in any of the usual and most convenient shapes. I lay no claim to this or any more simple or elaborate handle, the fact of its being a hand-saw handle being all that is necessary.
B B is the blade of the saw. It is inserted in a slitI previously cut into handle A, and into which slit the blade will lit tight. vThe top of said slit is covered by a metallic plate, M', secured there by means of screws s s, Ste. rlhe said plate M' bears, on its inner face, a lug L, designed to catch into a notch, N, out to that efect into the inserted part of the top edge of the blade B.
P is a metallic pin inserted into a hole into the angle of the lower edge of the handle, and a corresponding hole in the blade of the saw. The hole in the handle through which P is inserted being cut on the edge of said handle, the pin P is held in proper place by means of two metallic plates, M M, set on both sides of the saw-blade', and secured to the handle A by means of screws S' and S.
S S are two screws designed to hold pin P, and prevent its eventually dropping out when the saw is used. The said screws S S are set and screwed through plate M, pin P, and into the wood of the handle.
It is obvious that blade B being held tight between. the twoinside faces of the slit into which it i's inserted, being furthermore, as one might say, hooked on lug L, and afterwards held in that position by means of pin P, which is itself held by vthe combinationV ofv plates M M and screws S S, is very :firmly secured to the handle A, and, indeed, as rmly secured as iu the case of any of the expensive. and complicated devices now in use for the same effect.
The above description applies to wooden sawhan dies, but the described devices could be applied to any hand-saw handles, whether metallic or partly metallic, as Well as when made entirely of wood.
Not only is the blade B rmly secured to the handle A, but it is also very easily removed, all to be .done being to unscrew screws S S, then pushvout pirrw P, and Withdraw the blade B fromits handle A. The same handle can, therefore, be used for a 'series of sev eral saw-blades. This alone would give my invention a great importance in the eyes of any mechanic, who, when he happens to break his saw, must buy a saw and its handle; whereas, with my invention, he would have to buy a saw-blade only.
Having thus described my invention,
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-
The combination of the handle A, metallic plate M', with lug L for fitting into the notch N, plates M M, pin P, confined by screws S vS, for retaining a saw-v blade; the Whole constructed to operate in the manner and for the purpose set forth and described.
WM. T. HARVEY, JR.
