Beit known that we, SAMUEL FRIEND and JOHN McOoLLoM, of Decatur, in the county of Macon, and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Hand splint-Knives; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying-grlrawings, forming part of this specification, in which- Figure l is a top view of our'improved splint-knife. Figure 2 is a back view.

This invention relates to an improvement in a knife for splitting splints or splits from timber, for making baskets and other purposes, and consists in a tool resembling a spoke-shave in form, and is worked by one man, drawing it towards him, without a carriage, instead of by pushing with vseveral men, Ain the manner of the splint-machines in common use.

By the use of our improved hand splint-machine, there is a saving effected of two-thirds ,of the labor required usually, and the work is much better done,

splints of any length being cut evenly -and smoothly out of hard, seasoned timber.

A represents the stock, made usually about one foot long, of hard wood. B is the flat rectangular knifeblade, bevelled on the under side next the stock to a moderately sharp edge, as shown in fig. 3. iIt is held in place by two stirrups a a, which 1ie-over the ears' at the ends of the knife, 'and pass through the stock A, having screw-nuts c on the prongs to draw them up. At each end of the knife are set-screws b b, which also pass through the stock, and bear upon the knife to regulate the width of its mouth, according to the size ofthe splint. Behind the knife, and fastened to the stock, is a curved metal plate guiding apron G,

which bears with a spring or elastic pressure upon the splint, to prevent it from curling, as it leaves the knife, keeping it straight and dat, so that the cut shall be even, as`tlie knife advances in the timber'.

Having thus described our invention,

XVe claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The construction and arrangement of the stock A, dat rectangular knife-blade B, secured. thereto by means of the stirrups a a, and adjusted by means of the set-screws b b, curved metal spring apron C, secured to the bevelled under side of .said stock A, its outer end projecting' therefrotnfand guiding the splints, as herein set forth for .the purpose specified.
