Description

PATENTED AUG. 20, 1907.
N; LYON.
v WRENCH.
' APPLICATION TILED MAY 18, 190'!- 3 vwzulioz wmmm NICHOLAS LYON, OF NANTY GLO, PENNSYLVANIA.
WRENCH.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 20, 1907.
Application filed May 18, 1907. Serial No. 374,324.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, NICHOLAS LYON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Nanty G10, in the county of Cambria and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in Wrenches, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a wrench of that type provided with a nut-receiving socket mounted in the head of the shank and provided with a ratchet whereby the nut or bolt may be removed by a back and forth movement and without removing the wrench from the nut.
The invention has for one of its objects to improve and simplify the construction and operation of the device of this character so as to be comparatively easy and inexpensive to manufacture, composed of few parts, and so designed that different sized nut-receiving members can be readily applied to the head of the wrench.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a wrench having a chambered head composed of two parts removably connected whereby different sizes and forms of nutreceiving members can be employed in the wrench.
With these objects in view and others, as will appear as the description proceeds, the invention comprises the various novel features of construction and arrangement of parts which will be more fully described hereinafter and set forth with particularity in the claims appended hereto.
In the accompanying drawing, which illustrates one of the embodiments of the invention, Figure 1 is a plan view of the wrench. Fig. 2 is a similar view with the removable plate of the head taken off. Fig. 3 is a side elevation with the head portion in section. Figs. 4, 5 and 6 are plan views of different forms of ratchet members for nuts of different sizes and shapes.
Similar reference characters are employed to designate corresponding parts throughout the several views.
Referring to the drawing, 1 designates the handle or shank of the wrench, and 2, the head preferably formed integrally with the handle. The head is provided with an opening 3 in one side and a circular chamber 4. The head is cut away on the side opposite from that having the opening 3 that has an undercut shoulder 5. On the cut away side of the head is a removable plate 6 provided with an opening 7 registering with the opening 3, and at the inner edge of the plate is a bevel 8 engaging under the shoulder 5, whereby the inner portion of the plate is locked in position. On the plate is a spring catch 9 that hooks under the head 2 and en gages in a recess 10 of the latter, the said catch cooperating with the undercut shoulder 5 for holding the plate in position. The inner edge of the plate is provided with a tongue 11 engaging in the slot 12 of the shank so as to prevent lateral movement of the plate. Arranged within the chamber 4 is a nut-receiving member 13 provided with a socket 14 for receiving a nut, and on the member are ratchet teeth 15 with which cooperate a pawl 16. urged by a spring 18 into ratchet engagement with the teeth 15, whereby the nut-receiving member 13 is permitted to turn in one direction. The member 13 has annular shoulders 19 that engage in the openings 3 and 7 of the head 2'and plate 6 for rotatably mounting the member 13. Since the plate 6 is removable, nut'receiving members provided with sockets 20 of different shapes and sizes, can be employed in the wrench and as put up for the market, the wrench will be provided with several such nut-receiving members or ratchets,
Having thus described the invention, what 1 claim is'.-
1. A wrench comprising a handle, a head formed integrally therewith and provided with an undercut shoulder and a recess adjacent the shoulder, a plate on the head having a tongue engaging in the recess and an edge engaging under the shoulder, a catch on the plate engaging the head for preventing displacement of the plate, a ratchet member retained in the head by the plate. and a spring-pressed pawl cooperating with the ratchet member.
2. A wrench comprising a handle, a head formed integral therewith and provided with an undercut shoulder and an opening, a plate on the head beveled at one edge to engage under the shoulder and having an opening alining with that of the head, a ratchet member disposed in the head and removahly held in the opening of the latter and of the plate, a spring catch on the plate engaging the head, a pawl in the head engaging the ratchet member, and means cooperating with the catch for preventing relative lateral movement between the head and plate.
In testimony whereof, I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
NICHOLAS LYON.
