CLAMP FOR COMPRESSING SPRINGS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
.` Patented Jan. '7, 1908.
Application filed September 12. 1907. Serial No. 392,633.
Q o c 'onipressing andl holding springs, the' structure being more espenially designed for .s in eonjunction with springs employed to drain valves 'to their seats such as are now eoininonly.foundin gas engines and the like.
1.5' Thefin'yentilin is illustrated in the eccompeny'iiiglifiwings wherein: l
'Figure l 1s a perspective view of the lig. 2 a vertical sectional view taken 4 0 tion B which relation with-thespring end Fig. 3 a similar view tairenonthe line 3-3 of Fig-2.
:The object of the present invention is'to provide esimple' and ellicient device where- 5. b ythe spring which is employed to drew the valve to its mit nuiy be compressed in order 'that the eclater-pin or key which passes Ithrough.'the valve stem may be removed,v ,andA the valve with its stem withdrawn from thelvalve easing or the valve and its stein freed fro'iiil the spring, so that the valve may be rotated upon and periodically lifted frr'im itslsciit to grind the valve and the seat ifso desired. ln therlraiiings, A designates e U-sheped plete or beni-ing member, preferably formed ol n thin sheet ol' steel, the opening between the firms boing made sullioiently large to pessiiround the ordinary nipple or projecextends downwardly from the :nid through which the valve :is is usuel ifi vapor engines. dowiiii'zirdly ,from euch arm of' the plete ifi is a rod or stom lil, each stem be- 5 Ving three led :it its lower end. A thumbnut F is mountful upon each oi seid threaded rods, and e ixiovnble plete or abutment (fr is mounted upon the rods ebove thc nuts. The holes in the plete G ore made such size valve cosi stern' l) p EX ten d that the plate muy be moved readily up and down upon the rods.
Plato (l will preferably be loi-med as shown in Fig. l; that is to say, it will be semicirculer in contour .sind will be provided 'with un opening or slot ll, the opening' occupying' a position between the openings through which .the rods' E ere passed. The innermost portion .of the opening may be slightly reduced being ined@ fol' sul'licient size to receive oneV end of the cotter-pin or.
key therein when the clamp is positioned upon the velvc stein in the not of compress'- ing the spring.
"As will bcsecn upon reference tolfigs. 2 and 3, the platen is passed inwardly above the upper end Yo'lfthe spring l, while the movable abutment 'G is passed beneath the washer J which is commonlyemployed in conjunction lwith the spring. The lower end of the vulve stem passes into the enlarged or outer portion of the slot or` opening' Il, while one end of the Cotter-pin or key K occupies a'position in the reduced portio'i of the slot or'openingH-l VV'hen the parts are positioned es shown in the sectional view, the thumb-nuts niuybe screwed up, and in so doing the washer J will be elevated bythe movable plate G, and the spring placed under compression, the upper end of the spring' bearing upon the under face of the fixed lote A. After the Cotter-pin or key key may be withdrawn, und the valve `e-iid'its stein moved outwardly from the valve casing While' the spring and washerv are held within the clamp. Thus the spring und the washer may he entirely removed from the engine while the spring is maintained under 'full conipression. Furthermore, the washer isnt all tiines held securelyY against the spring, thus allowing the valve stein to move frechT in the opening in the nipple or valve casing, which is essential when the valve is being regi-cond. Also e neworun old springl muy be positioned upon the engine while under emnpiession in the clamp, find the washer und the lower end ol` the spring may be. 'l`i'eelr moved in any direction in order lo receive the incoming Yo lve stem.
',lllie clamp boing smell :uid compnet .naw bereadily positioned, oud muy be employ, wlicrc other spriug-eoinpressing iileviccs msj. not be used by reason ol" the levers and like parts which interfere with other portions ol the machine.
Hoving thus described l claim is: l
l. ln combination with :i relatively thin plate or l wiring member :idopled to receive the upper end o'l' o :quil-ui'. o. pair ol' threaded rods extending' dowrmnrili' therel'rtnu; :i
relativelyv thin member mounted upon seid my invention what j has been re ieved oi :my pressure thereon the lilo - wardly from said plate;
.adaptedt'o afford a bearing for one en mounted upon 'each of sai rods adapted to i ass between the lower end of the s ring or tiie washer against which the spring ears and the retaining device Jfor the spring; and a nut mounted upon the lower end of each of said rods.
2. In aclamp comprising a U-shapedplate, a pair of 'threaded rods extending owna .second plate looselymounted upon the lower end or said rods, said latebeing provided with a slot or opening t rough which a valve stem may ass; and ay nut mounted upon the .lower end .of each rod below said movable plate.
3. In aclamp, the combination of a lgte o a spring which is to be compressed; a pair of rods extending downwardly from said late, the lower ends of said rods being threaded; a second plate loosely mounted upon said rods,4 said plate being semi-circular in outline and provided with a slot or opening adapted to receive the lower end of a valve stem, and to permit the passage of a Cotter-pinl carried by the valve stem into lsaid openingg-and a nut stems.
4. vA clamp for placing a spring under compression com rising a relatively iiired plate against whic one end of the s ring is designed to bear said plate being re atively thin vand adapted to pass between one end' of the springand the member 'against which it bears;
a pair of draw-rods extending from said a movable abutment against which the opposite end ofthe spring rests, said plate;
abutment being relatively thin, and heldin its proper position with reference to the spring y said rods; and means for moving the abutment and placing the spring under a state of compression. y 5. A clamp for placing a spring under compressioncomprising a opening therein being of a size suiiicient to embracea projection upon a valve shell or casing; 'ai air of downward y'from the outer arms of saidU- sha ed member and at substantially right ang es thereto; a second U-shaped plate, the o ening in which is somewhat smaller than t at in the u per plate; and a nut mounted upon each o said threaded rods below said second plate.
6. A clamp for compressing springs and maintaining them in such state, comprising two relatively thin U-shaped plates ada ted to be passed over the respective ends o the spring and between the ends of the spring and the members against which the spring bears; and 'means for drawing said plates together and maintaining them in such position with he spring clamped between them.
7. In a clam for compressing springs, the combination'oi a pair of draw-rods; iixed means carried at one end of the rods, said means being adapted to be passed between one end of the s ring and the member against which it normally bears; movable means also carried by the rods, said movable means being adapted to pass between the end of the spring and the member which retains it in position; and means to advance said movable means toward the 'fixed means and to thereby compress the spring.
In testimony whereof l have signed my naine to this speciiication'in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
