To all whom it may concern:

Be it knownthat I, WILLIAM DICKMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Grinnell, in the county of Grove and State of Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Siding Gage or Marker; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which itA appertains to make and use the same.

This invention has relation to new and useful improvements in siding gages, or markers, and has for its object to provide a simple and inexpensive device of this character through the use of which the clap boards or sidings may be cut so as to fit in position without any overlapping.

In the accompanying drawings,-Figure l is a side elevation, showing the application of the invention; Fig. 2 is a cross section taken on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view of the gage or marker.

In the embodiment illustrated, a gage or marker is shown, comprising an elongated body 1 of preferably rectangular or oblong form in cross section. This body is provided at its inner end at the corners thereof on its inner face with two longitudinally disposed prongs 2, and is also provided at its inner end and at the corners thereof on its inner face with two longitudinally disposed prongs 3, the inner faces of each setof said prongs being beveled or cut on a gradually inward incline to facilitate in the insertion and removal from position of the same.

In practice, we will assume that two or more clap boards or sidings are necessary to reach across the front or side of a building, and that the operator begins by nailing or fastening the clap boards in position from the right-,hand side. In this case, it will be obvious that the last clap board will be placed in position from the left hand side, and that in most cases the inner end of the samewill overlap the adjacent clap board, and must therefore, be partly cut off, so that it will lit in position. This may be readily accomplished by inserting or slipping the prongs 2 and 3 on opposite faces of the overlapping clap board, and then slipping it inwardly until positioned against the adjacent end of the adjacent clap board. When in this position, the point or place where the overlapping clap board is to be cut off may be indicated by marking across it with a pencil, using the innermost of the prongs 2 as a guide. Should the operator begin by nai-ling or fastening the clapboards into position from the left hand side of the house or other building to which they are to be applied, the prongs 2 and 3, respectively, at the left hand side of the operator will be brought into use. While these last mentioned prongs may be dispensed with and the invention still made to operate successfully, it has been found preferable to construct the device as shown, as a more extended bearing surface for engaging. the overlapping clapboard is provided to retain the device in position.

From the foregoing description, taken in l connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction and operation of the invention will be readily understood without requiring a more extended explanation.

Various changes in the forni, proportion and the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the principle or sacrificing any `of the advantages of this invention, as defined by the appended claims.

Having described my invention, I claim:

. 1. Aclap board or siding marker, comprising a body having extendingfrom one end two pairs of longitudinally disposed spaced prongs, each pair having their inner faces inclined inwardly.

2. A clapboard or siding marker, having extending from one end a pair of longitudinally spaced prongs, and also from said end and spaced laterally from said prongs a second pair of longitudinally spaced prongs, the inner faces of each pair of prongs being inclined inwardly.
