Be it known that we, J oonE. BAsnoRE and CHARLns W. JnNsnN, citizens of the United States, residing at Tippecanoe City, in the county of Miami and State of Ohio, have inventeda new and'useful improvement in Vises, of which the f ollowing is a specification. r 5
Our invention relates toim'provements in vises and has for its object to produce a vise in which a movable jaw may bequickly adjusted by hand toward or from a fixed jaw, according to the thickness of the work to be grasped, and then secured and caused to move slightly toward said fixed jaw by the turning of a handle bar or lever.
Our invention therefore consists in certain novel features of construction, arrangement and combination of parts, as will be hereinafter fully described and pointed out in the claims, reference being had to the accome panying drawings in which f Figure 1 is a vertical section of a vise and frame showing our improvements. 1 is the fixed jaw of the vise which is shown as the frame work of abench, and 2 is the. movable jaw.
Extending from the fixed jaw 1 to the back bar 15 of the bench and rigidly connected at both ends, are the two clamp bars 9, 9 placed side by side and separated a suitable distance; these two clamp bars are square in cross section and support a clamp member 7 which has square notches 7 in each vertical side in which lie the clamp bars 9, and which has also circular openings 7 near its upper and lower ends through which pass the round pulling bars 9, the rear ends of said bars .8 being threaded to receive the nuts 12 which are screwed on the bars 8 on either side of the clamp plate 7 when placed in position; the front ends of the bars 8 are bent to form hooks 8 the inner surfaces of the hooks being curved. The bars 8 pass through the rigid jaw of the vise and also through the'movable jaw 2 and the front hooked ends engage a spiral cam 5 which has a central opening 5 t erethrough and afiat channel 5 in its front face. The earn 5 is fitted on a circular boss 6* on the center plate 6 which is secured ,to the movable jaw 2 by screws and has the rectangular openings 6 through which passthe hooked ends ofthe pulling rods 8. Over th cam 5 and the center plate 6 is secured the cover 4, said cover having a central aperture to allow the cam 5 to pass through it, said cam'being held to the center plate by a bolt 13 which passes through the boss 6 and is se- .cured by a nut 16 on the inner end of the bolt; this bolt also holds in place a handle 10 which isfiattened at its center and cut out and fits in the channel 5 in the outer face of the cam 5; on each end of the handle 10 is a knob 11. As stated the pulling bars 8 have hooked ends which engage the spiral cam 5, the hooks fitting on the spiral rib 5 of the cam. The circular openings 7 through the clamp plate are slightly larger than the diameter of the threaded ends of the pulling rods 8 to allow the clamp plate to cant slightly on the same.
The operation of the vise is as follows. The handle 10 is swung around until the pulling rods move the clamp plate to a vertical position when the horizontal walls of the rectangular notches 7 will be parallel with the upper and lower faces of the clamp bars 9, 9; the movable jaw may now be moved toward the fixed jaw until it engages the article to be clamped; the handle 10 is then swung farther around carrying the cam with it and the pulling rods 8, 8, causing the clamp plate 7 to assume the position shown in Figs. 1 and 2, whereupon the horizontal faces of the rectangular notches 7 being canted obliquely to the upper and lower faces of the clamp bars 9, clamp or grip the same and consequently hold the movable jaw of the vise tightly against the article in the vise. As the pitch of the spiral rib 5 on the cam is rapid the vise will be very quick acting both in applying and releasing.
The operative parts are mostly out of sight and the cam being covered by the housing 4 will be protected from dust and grease.
